To everyone it had a different meaning. For some. School was an educational experience-in classrooms, lyceums, concerts, and football games. School, to some, was homecoming, dances, basketball games, and debating. To others, school was selling and eating concessions, wrestling matches, going to class meetings, and electing class of- ficers. School was breaking or trying to obey the rules. To some students, school was the place where they took tests, served de- tention, paid gum fines and library book fines, and got into trouble. School was going to trackmeets, reading the BULLDOG, getting jobs, and getting out of trouble. It was going to prom, sel- ling play tickets, and trying not to flunk. Getting report cards back on time, cadet teaching, and cheering at pep rallies were all parts of school life. Having your first date was usually connected with school. School for some students was blushing in class when your report was read, or complaining about phy. ed. Student Government Day. science class, book reports, and senior class trip were all integral components of high school at Milbank. Term papers, make-up slips, and bib cards, student council, knocking hot lunch, and worrying if you brushed your teeth on the day the nurse checks were things all high school kids shared. Key Club, National Honor Society, and cheerleading involved some of the student population. But for most, school was parties, feeling virtuous when you throw your gum out before you were told to, and Iowa Basics. Being upset with a teacher might result in un- fairness, but still there were the fun days in class. More than any- thing, school was growing out to people and learning to care about the mixture of personalities that were friends and fellow class- mates. Pamela Schank Not Pictured: Michael Lambrechts David McCulloch Arlin Munson Cris Frciwald and Sher Pop what do you think of him, Ma' juniors flaunt floyfully Finally having achieved the distinction of being upperclassmen, juniors continued to be an active class. Juniors added English projects, annual members, paper reporters, wrestlers, debaters, cheerleaders, runners, basketball players and Boy and Girl Staters to MHS student life. Many class members held down jobs for their after school hours. Junior English and American History also provided homework for this time. Being upperclassmen was just one of the new privileges juniors obtained. No more phy. ed., being 16 and old enough to drive even if getting a car was sometimes tough, and ordering class rings all brightened the year for juniors. ij Greg Miller, vice-president; Dalton Tietjen, president; Debbie Bcachcm, treasurer; Shcrree I'lancry, secretary. With a year of experience behind them they displayed their skills at football. Junior varsity debate was also sophomore dominated. The “B' basket- ball team, made up entirely of sophomores, often gave the crowd a thrill. Members of the class of ’75 also added to other school clubs--FFA, FHA, drill team, band, chorus, and paper staff, etc. Wrestling benefited from the additions, three of whom wrestled for the varsity. Track, golf, and tennis seasons saw sophomore partici- pants. Their sophomore activities included homework from biology, like bringing frogs and plants, to the never to be forgotten Julius Caesar. Geometry baffled many sophomores with isosceles triangles, etc. To break routine of classwork, tests were given to determine whether sand shoveling or ditch digging were suitable occupations. Now done with their last year as underclassmen, sopho- mores anticipate being juniors. 37 frantic, dearful, and frrlorn James Adler Christopher Acsoph Karen Angcrhofer Vicki Angerhofcr Wade Davis Patrick DcFea Kevin Bailey Douglas Barlund Julie Binde Joann Dock ter Marie Dockter Terrance Dolcn Earl Bohlcn Peggy Bohn Donna Bor chert Keith Bracht Marccy Briggs Terry Brooks Mary Brown Kevin Bunting Thomas Bury Freshman Class Officers: Kae Dailie, secretary; Chns Acsoph. president; Anita Janavs, vice-president; Shcrcc Stcmsrud, treasurer. After overcoming their awe of the school-We’re actually in high school, you guys-and the upper classmen-Don’t say that, here comes a SENIOR-the freshmen joined activities of MHS with fresh enthusiasm. They brought new ideas to FHA. cheerleading, and FFA. They added new voices to chorus, student council, and provided new talents for track, crosscountry, basketball, drill team, and dcclam coaches to work with. The freshmen quickly be- came accustomed to tests, grading scales, razzing, and detention along with the other perils of life at MHS. For example, float building was a fairly new experience for many of the class, but they managed a second place. School dances didn’t overpower the freshmen as attendance was very high. They upheld the freshmen tradition in pep rallies by giving it a good try. Over the course of the year, the freshmen learned many things, science, math, English, etc., also poise and con- fidence. Through conquering the fundamentals, the class of ’76 is ready for new challenges. 41 Seventh GndC.QaS.QJfiS.fflB: Andy Johnson, presi- dent; Tim Graf, vice-president; Marty Porter, secre- tary; Kerry Koch, treasurer; Lisa Moldenhauer, Curtis Bcrkncr, student council representatives. George Antrobus is John Doe or George Splevin or you-the average American at grips with a destiny, sometimes sout, sometimes sweet. The Antrobuses have survived fire, flood, pestilence, the seven-year iocusts, the ice age. the black pox and the double feature, a dozen wars and as many depressions. They run many a gamut, are as durable as radiators, and look upon the future with a disarming optimism. Alternately bewitched, befuddled, and becalmed, they are the stuff of which heroes are made-heroes and buffoons. They are true offspring of Adam and Eve, victims of all the tils that flesh is heir to. They have survived a thousand calam- ities by the skin of their teeth. The play is a tribute to their indestructibility. Mike Pauli. Debbie Vallance, Susan Scheff, I'm glad to know there are such 54 Susan Schcff, “Henry’s thrown another stone.' Do Kangaroos Keally Have Pouches?” Debra, the foreign exchange student at MHS, had the follow- ing comments about her American exchange experience: “As an Australian AFSer my first aim for the year was to kill the myth of Australia as the land of 99% KANGAROOS and 1% people. 1 failed, people still ask me. ‘Do kangaroos really have pouches?’ Other than the misconceptions about Australia people in Milbank and the USA have been very friendly and hospitable to me. Although I haven't had a real language barrier and the American and Australian way of living is very comparable (both western), there are many subtle differences in the two ways of life. The school system here is quite foreign to-me especially the fact that I don’t have to wear a school uni- form. Here the school day starts earlier, periods are longer and there are far more extra curricular activities than in the academically inclined Australian system. The climate is also differcnl-too cold with a lot of snow (although I wish there had been more.) All the school activities, especially the Seniors’, are a lot different from back home. Student Council instituted fresh ideas into life at MHS. The Liberty Tree, a bulletin board to express student opinion and points of interest, made its appearance at MHS due to Student Council members. It fea- tured current events and newspaper accident reports, special honors to MHS students and lost and found announcements. The Council dele- gated four members to serve as spokesmen for the Council at meetings with parents and administration on student policies. The Council also offered suggestions for a drug curriculum program to be instituted the following year. Student Council planned the Slush Day in Milbank. In addition to inventing new jobs. Council carried out the traditional duties. The Homecoming Parade and Dance came under their super- vision. With the pre-dance publicity that Student Council members were responsible for, attendance at the dance was great. Another tradi- tional duty of Student Council was to contribute to the AI S fund. The Student Council of 1972-73 accomplished this by two parachute coin tosscs-no injuries were sustained. To get MHS in a romantic mood for Valentine’s Day, members constructed booths to resemble post of- fices. For only the price of a nickel, students could mail a valentine to their sweeties. Circumstances decreed that delivery must be a day late, but valentines kept their messages fresh. In order to figure out new ways to brighten up school life, and to get all their business done, once a week members gathered in Home Ec Three. Cris Frciwald, “1 got a val- entine! I got a valentine! This year there are twenty-seven young men in the club. Meetings are held every-other Thursday during the school year. The 1972 Interna- tional Key Club Theme is “Insure Tomorrow.” Throughout the school year the Milbank Key Club takes part in a variety of activities. The Club presented a bouquet of roses to Queen Levon Riggin at the Homecoming Coronation Ceremony. The sophomore members served as Guides throughout Post High School Planning Day. The members of the club have been taking turns attending the regular meetings of the Milbank Kiwanis Gub. The Key Gub Officers took over one of the Kiwanis Gub meet- ings of the Milbank Kiwanis Gub. This year the first Ugly Man Contest was sponsored by the Key Club. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays the members collected labels from well known grocery products. The labels were sent to UNICF.F. The members of the club participated with the Kiwanis Gub in a pop- corn selling project. Some of the profits from this project will be used to help defray expenses to the Key Club District Convention to be held in Alexandria, Minnesota. Fach year the key club has been helping the Kiwanians with their Snow Queen Festival. A sum of money is donated each year by the Key Gub to the Local American Field Service Organization to help defray expenses for a foreign exchange student. The Key Gub presents a Teacher of the Year Award to the members of the Milbank High School Faculty. At the end of the year a banquet is held for all members and their parents at which time the new officers are installed and the new members are inducted. Other miscellaneous services, social, and moneymaking projects are carried out each year by the members of the Milbank Key Club. It bridged the gap between the school activities and the working community. Benefits of this organization were received by the school, employers, com- munity, and the students, most of all. Twenty-two seniors took part in DECA action. They combined fifteen hours a week at a part-time job with a full twenty hours of classroom work. DECA members not only learned a specific skill while on the job, but they also earned money for their labors. It was hassle alter hassle this year as the Bulldog paper staffers handled the harrowing experiences of meeting deadlines and doing their own paper layout. Under the leadership of editor Mary Andersen and page editors Sharon Heffernan, Tom Price, Teresa Jurgens, and Julie Jensen, twenty reporters noted the news in their monthly publication. Mr. Warren Beck served as advisor. Reporters spent many frustrating hours attempting to get all the information needed for a story, and editors fought to keep track of newsworthy events and to keep the staff on schedule. The thrust of the Bulldog was to keep students informed of virtually everything that involved high school student-every- thing from Eagle scouts to elections. In so doing, it hopefully stimulated interest not only in school activities, but quite simply, in life as well. If the paper accomplished these objec- tives in any degree, the anguish was well worth the effort. Well, that story idea went over like a lead balloon. Novice Debate: Seated: Dale Rungc. Peggy Bohn. Debaters Dazzle Defeated Opponents The Novice Squad spent the year learning the fundamentals of argumentation-debate-as well as trying to decide if public schools should be financed by the federal govern- ment. The first year of debating is mainly to gain experi- ence and to prove one’s speaking ability. The competition is frequently severe and all Freshmen look forward to being Sophomores, so they can do unto Freshmen as was done unto them. Junior Varsity Debate: Mary Jo Adler, Donna Hallbcrg,Celeste I ngebretson, Jane Dornc- man, Kathy reden, Mary Gill, Alan Mullin. Keith Strandvold. Sophomores had a fine year and established a very successful record. A number of honors were won by the squad. They took 1st place at Sioux Falls Lincoln and at one conference tourney. 2nd place honors were captured at Groton and at two conference tourneys. Red- field saw the squad logging 3rd place finishes. Several individual honors were also captured during the year. These debaters can look forward to a great deal of success as junior Varsity and Varsity participants. Varsity Debate: Lane Gruenwald, Mary Jo Andersen,Greg Miller, Sharon Heffcrnan, Dalton lietjen, Mr. KolkmanTCcrald DcVaal. The Varsity, while being quite young, also had a successful season. They captured the Conference Champion- ship for the 2nd year in a row with three successive firsts and a record of 17-1. The squad placed 3rd in the NFL Tourney in a bid to go to the Nationals. It is the highest finish in that tourney in Milbank history. Another milestone was reached when the squad took 3rd place in the Mid- west’s Tourney’s Sweepstakes. This is the 1st Sweepstakes that has been won outside of the conference for MHS. A number of individual honors have also been received at several tournaments. The highlight of the season was when Mary Jo Andersen won the State Championship in Women’s Extemp and qualified for a trip to Nationals. This will be held at the University of Pittsburgh. She also was awarded the D.C. Reutler award which is given to the top four Senior debaters in the state of South Dakota. A fine finish for the only Senior on the squad, and a fine future for the next year’s Varsity. 77 Juture Jarmers Jind Jeeding 3arrows Js Jun Jilting For the past fifteen years FFA at MHS has earned a superior rating for their work in agriculture. During the year eight standing committees planned a program of work that the club carried out. Activities that kept the club busy this year were parent and mem- ber banquet, operating and patronizing a concession stand at football games, a team in the city softball league, and attending State and National Conventions. They also co-sponsored with FHA a sweetheart dance. FFA took 1972-73 as their year for taking honors. One member of FFA received the American Farmer degree. Three members obtained state degrees. While forty-one boys held the chapter farmer degree and twenty had the greenhand degree. The officers won second at the district ritual contest. Mere- dith Van Sambeek was a member of the farm mechanics team that represented South Dakota in the national contest and ranked fifth in the nation. In all the fun the FFA members had, they prepared for a serious job. Even though the total rural population is decreasing, agriculture is becoming more important every year. But who takes this seriously? The Cross- Country team of MHS did. Though official practices did not start until a week before school, many of the boys began running on their own in early August. Their typical workout consisted of distance runs of four to six miles with occasional speed interval breaks. The team discovered what Mr. Olson meant when he said, “a hard workout.” But with Big Stone Lake cool and inviting and right along the course, the runners gave in often to the temptation to-jump in the lake. Coming in first for the Bulldogs in all the meets (and first in the lake) was Senior Dave Van Sambeek. He won the Whetstone Valley Conference meet and placed twelfth at the State Meet. 97 Cross Country Team: Row I: Coach Richard Olson, P. Lindquist. D. Wiese, D. Bocrgcr. C. Trapp, C. Wctlmt !: Treis.
