Warren L. Colberg passed away on November 25, while preparing for the Thanksgiving concert. Those of us who were close to Warren Colberg knew him as a warm, sincere man. He was a friend to everyone, and he was always willing to listen to a student's problems or questions. Warren Colberg was a happy man. His laugh was one-of-a-kind. Whenever he laughed, it echoed throughout the halls and everyone knew who it was. Warren Colberg was an active, energetic man. Students could see him riding his bicycle to school on brisk fall mornings or see him jogging down the street. Warren Colberg was a man involved in life. He loved life and the world around him. He was a church choir director, and was very active in his church. He gave of his own time and effort so that he could help others. But, most of all, we remember Warren Colberg as a man who loved his profession. His dedication to music was unbound- ed. He spent many nights at school rehearsing with his students. He wanted his music perfect. He was respected in his pro- fession by all who knew him. His knowledge of music seemed endless, but his love of music was endless. Warren Colberg has departed from this life, but he is not to be forgotten by the many hundreds of students who have passed through the halls of MHS. To his memory we, the students of MHS, wish to dedicate this annual. May this serve as a lasting tribute to a beloved friend. 2 Student Of e On the pages that follow only a fraction of memories have been captured: mem- ories that have highlighted this past year. We, of the annual staff wish to express our appreciation to the students of MHS for providing us with the material used in this annual. We have merely presented glimpses of the past. The future is in your hands. John Winquist: These foldouts from farm journal really make my day. MMS in Motion The atmosphere in the halls of MHS has various in- tensities depending on the time of day or night. Stu- dents rush from class to class and race to be first in the lunch line. At other times there is a quiet, almost haunt- ing stillness throughout the building. To all casual ob- servers, MHS may seem like any institution of learning. Ginger Grabow: Maybe I should have stayed out. Michelle DeJong and Doug Falk: Do you ever get the feeling we're being followed? The real function of the school lies hidden in de- bate boxes, play props, musical instruments, foot- ball jerseys, and trophies. Though classes are impor- tant for learning new skills and ideas, the span of our high school years is a time for adaptation to society and the world around us. Our relationship with peo- ple around us at school is very important. MMS in Motion We encounter many varied personalities through working with others. A class becomes a group while planning the prom or making homecoming floats. Outstanding traits are recognized and challenged. Our varied talents can be de- veloped through sports, speech, artistic, or musical ac- tivities. Lane Gruenwald and Greg Miller, The Dewey Decimal System really amazes me. Terry Davis, Darla Knaus, and John Gill pre- tending they don't see our camera man. Ruth Mueller, How can you write a 500 word theme on the origination of the word 'the'? Steve Springer and Bert Porter, A little more to the left, please. Shirley Strube. You didn't! High school is only one rung on the ladder of life, but it is a big step from here out into the world. Therefore, we at MHS want to live our lives to the fullest to get all we can from these four short years. 5 Jim Dornbusch, Dear Abby. .. Candy Mohnson, I pledge allegiance to the flag... on every other Monday. 6 Brad Van de Voort: Spanish rice again?? Lane Gruenwald. Marsha Johnson: Ah. my little cooing dove. . . Caught Off-Quard Stanley Knaus, Neil Homan: I hate it when my blanket's in the wash. Kurt Drube. Mark Anderson: This rush hour traffic is murder. 7 Zhurber Carnival Wins Superior at State Contest And don't forget the puppy biscuit. . . Jeannie Campbell, Steve Heffernan. Jeannie Campbell, La- Vonne Johnson, Larry Pri- byl, and John Emanuel. Ki- wanis chauffeurs are Dean Webb and Darold Schmidt. On October 17-25 Milbank exchanged stu- dents with Winnipeg for one week. The four stu- dents stayed in private homes, visited the two schools. River East and Miles MacDonnald, and toured the metropolis of Winnipeg. The students enjoyed their stay and felt it was well worth the time lost in school. The exchange was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, which hopes it will become an annual event. Milbank- Winnipeg Exchange Students Roland Geiger gives Darla Knaus the Canadian hex. These Canadian students spent one week at MHS, John Hunter, Roland Geiger, Jacque Bradshaw, and Judy Irwin. 10 Addys Boutin gives us a sample of her award winning eyes. Addys Isbel Boutin Delgado, Milbank High School's second American Field Service student, transferred to Milbank from Panama City, Panama. Addys has been active in 'A' chorus and is the secretary of the newly organized Pep Club. Among her other accomplish- ments she has been named 'the Senior girl with the prettiest Eyes.' Miss Boutin spends her time in school studying for American and English literature, American government, American his- tory, sociology, and chemistry. Addys enjoys watching football and basketball games, and she participates in many sports including volleyball, basketball, swimming, and fox and goose. With a little practice, Addys has even mastered the art of figure skating. Addys truly has made Milbank's halls of learning more pleasant with her pretty eyes and good sense of humor. Miss Minor offering Addys a little Foreign Aid. Addys made the following comments concerning her life in our community, I came to Milbank in August and began my year here as another American student. When I first came I could hardly understand the language and I hardly talked to somebody, but now everybody tells me to Shut up because I talk too much. After two or three weeks of the beginning of my school year I began to feel better in my new life. The football games were a new experience for me because I heard about it but I never watch anybody playing but I fin- ished understanding the game. Comparing my school in Panama, I can see a little bit of difference because I was attending to all girls' school and here I think that I like better with boys too. Another difference is that here we choose the subjects that we want to take and in my school in Panama all the girls have to take the same subjects and they are about 13 or 14 sub- jects each year. The student council, under the successive leadership of Kevin Randall and Roger Bracht, was one of the most enterprising student govern- ments to be a part of MHS. Honor cards, available to any student with the qualifying grades, were given to fresh- man, sophomores, juniors, and the all-important seniors. A bulletin board in the honor study hall gave the students a chance to air their gripes, opinions, and works of poetry. Lunch hours were extended to a full hour, instead of the Spartan half-hour we had been allowed for lunch. Countless other issues were raised and discarded in the hallowed halls of Student Council. Debbie Nelson and Jeannie Campbell, z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z This year MHS seniors broke tradition and traveled by bus to the metropolis of Minneapolis for a fun-filled, educational tour. Braving the unexpected bad weather, these eighty-one tramped seven blocks to explore a mile long complex or rode an hour to a half hour tour. Sleepy eyes and weary feet came alive on interesting tours. Millions of dollars were seen at the Federal Reserve Bank (too bad it was to be destroyed). The as- sembly line at the Ford Motor Company enticed many MHS seniors. Other tours entertained and educated the students for the remainder of the three days. The highlight of the trip was the Ice Follies. All who went agreed they never expected such a fantastic spectacle. Being the first trip to Minneapolis, this year's senior trip was rather atrial run. It progressed very smoothly and without any major incident. The seniors felt the entire trip proved worth- while and hope seniors of the future will also enjoy many such adventures. The candidates for homecoming royalty were Queen-Vicki Reich, Sheila Walth, Roberta Dornbusch, and King-Brad Van de Voort, Tom Dravland, and John Emanuel. Homecoming day dawned with a little wind but clear skies for the colorful homecoming par- ade. That evening Webster put a damper on the homecoming festivities by defeating Milbank at the annual game. Government Day Encourages Student Jnvolvement Once again, the seniors coverged upon the city government in the annual American Legion sponsored Student Government Day. For elec- tion purposes the class was divided into two parties, four wards, and five districts. The Popu- lists elected Larry Pribyl party chairman, while the Grange Party chose Kevin Randall. Under their leadership platforms were perfected and a vigorous campaign was staged. Populist, Mike Peden, defeated Ed Koc for the mayor's seat. On Monday evening, April 5, the city offi- cials visited the town council. The following Tuesday morning found each elected or appoint- ed student observing his respective office. The participates agreed the day was worthwhile. They discovered that the processes of govern- ment are much more involved than most people expect. The climax of Student Government Day was the banquet, served in the American Legion Clubroom, Tuesday evening. Government Day posters decorate study hall wall. Populist party chairman Larry Pribyl. Memories of football games, hot, buttered popcorn, home- coming, dances, hot lunch and make-up slips. It was a time of sharing; everything from gym shoes to secrets. It was a time of giving; giving our time and energy to stuff- ing Kleenexes on the float; refilling the pop machine and working in the concession stand. It was a time of learning; not only dates, facts and sta- tistics, but ideas, concepts and theories. But even more im- portant we learned to take pride in our school and ourselves. It was a time of growing; not only physically, but mentally as well. Our minds expanded as we were exposed to new and different situations and discoveries. Yet our intellectual growth has just begun. There is so much yet to be learned, done, felt, and experienced. We are all infants taking our first shaky steps toward the outstretched arms of the world. 69 Junior class officers are, left to right: Terry Steinlicht, vice president; Derwin Dorale, treasurer; JoAnn Searcy, secretary; Tom Rethke, president. {juniors Home Stretch Although many may feel cramming forchem, mem- orizing highlights of history, or obediently following orders to 'fillem in blanks' of those 'plenty hard' alge- bra problems are inclined to be labeled as unwanted tasks, the Juniors in their new role as upper classmen willingly shouldered these responsibilities as a definite part of their activities at MHS. With studies prevailing, the Juniors always found time to participate in other rewarding experiences. Mutual cooperation in preparing for the class float proved successful when the Juniors came up with sec- ond place. New opportunities arose as the class mem- bers became eligible for individual honors in 'A' athletics. National Honor Society, school plays and the like. Continued efforts carried over from their two previous years were beneficial as the Juniors excelled in band, chorus, debate, cheerleading and numerous other school organizations. Preparation for the Junior- Senior Prom, the traditional highlight of the year, be- gan earlier than ever as the class was determined to boost attendance and reveal their artistic ability in the best possible way. As usual, the days flew past-too full to pack any- thing else in, yet each only a small stepping stone to the long-anticipated Senior year ahead. Sophomore Class Story The sophisticated sophomores are no longer at the bottom of the totem pole. They have delved into their intellect and potential and come up with some pretty surprising results. They deftly debated, deliberately diagrammed, drudgingly dissected, and diabolically discussed, while sweetly singing, scientifically solving, and successful scoring. In many cases, the sophomores climbed to the top of the totem pole. Their basketball team com- piled a very impressive record, which indicates their tremendous potential. They also made a name for themselves in debate and individual speaking events. 77 Glenda Aden Nancy Allen Tamara Anderson Darrell Angerhofer Deborah Angerhofer Gavin Angerhofer James Angerhofer Myla Arnold Debra Beachem Orlyn Berkner Mary Boe DeWayne Borchert Wayne Bowen Patricia Brotzel Mary Bue Debra Busk Julann Carlson Christine Chaloupka Timothy Conraads Kenne Dailie David DeJong Timothy DeJong Gerald DeVaal Douglas Dexter Freshmen class officers are, left to right: Lane Gruenwald, Presi- dent; Kurt Drube, vice president; Tamara Anderson, secretary- treasurer. Jreskmen Prove I Tree Wheelers FRESHMAN CLASS STORY The 1970-71 school year marked the beginning of four exciting, educational, and rewarding years for the 137 new freshmen of MHS. Though first appearing shy and inno- cent, they soon proved themselves to be a class full of energy. Throwing off initial uneasiness, the freshmen tackled the responsibilities which accompany high school students. Besides becoming oriented to the daily routine of classes and homework, they became active participants in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Many of the boys be- gan developing their athletic skills in freshmen football, basketball, and wrestling, while the girls cheered them on. Other enthsuiastic freshmen took part in declamation, novice debate, band and chorus. Exercising their class power, the freshmen obtained a third place rating on their homecoming float, falling only to their upperclassmen. With the completion of their first successful year at Milbank High School, the freshmen class eagerly antici- pates even greater accomplishments in the coming years. 78 Jreskmen James Dietman James Dornbusch T eresa Dornbusch Edmund Dorneman Michael Drobeck Kurt Drube James Egeberg Jonathan Eng Michael Erdahl Linda Fenner Sherree Flanery Debra Falk Orville Folk Steven Folk Angela Foss Debra Frerichs Mark Frickson Kenneth Giessmger Philip Giessinger Lane Gruenwald Lorna Hagen Clark Haliburton Cindy Halverson Sandra Hamm rich Michael Hansen Dean Hartman Sharon Heffernan Dana Houck Dawn Houck Rhonda Hurley Juris Janavs Randolph Jibbens Virginia Johanson Brent Johnson Debra Johnson Kenneth Johnson Marsha Johnson Lynae Kasuske Eddie Julius Kevin Kauers 79 Jeanne Keller Cynthia Kelly Michael Kelly Michael Konshak Kim Kosse Ronald Krause Karla Lambrechts Carolyn Larson Margaret Lesnar Bert Loehrer Penny Lundborg Clemens Marohl Donna Marquardt Kim Martin Pamela Martin Neal MieliU Greg Miller Darwin Minder Glenn Mueller Patty Mueller Tim Nordquist Vicky O'Farrell Vickie Parker Keith Pauli Miss Strobel and Ann Roggenbuch, One more time. Our fearless, spirit-minded cheerleaders have this year inspired the MHS fans with everything from witch-craft to tricycles and beauty contests. When times were desperate, they always came up with new tricks, even dousing our distinguished principal.
