In- stead of the usual shy, quiet, insecure f,frosh, the class of 73 surprised the upper-classmen by getting into the swing of things almost im- mediately. The freshmen participated in foot- ball, cross-country, basketball, cheerleading, all-school plays, declam, debate, music con- tests.... Well, the list could go on for quite some time. The freshmen found their year exciting and rewarding as well as fun. First came home- coming when the freshman float received honor- able mention. Then came the Sadie Hawkins dance where the freshmen girls got right into the spirit of the game. Semester exams came and went with only a few battle wounds, leaving the freshmen quite prepared for future tests. The freshmen completed one of the greatest of the four high school years in 1970 with three equally great years ahead. Sophomore Year Whether squeamingly cutting up a frog in biology, holding a seance in speech, swooning in typing class, or appreciating Pythagoras’ theory of right triangles, the sophomores let it be known that they were definitely a part of the MHS scene. But who wouldn’t have known it already after hearing them out-yell juniors and seniors at pep ral- lies—and between classes. Sophomores, outgrowing the humble position of green freshmen, soon learned the fine art of testing as they squeaked through semesters and then punched out preferences for lumber- jacking, nuclear physics, gardening, or some other exciting occupation. (And, speaking of “punching,” sophomores did that, too, as they gracefully served for the Junior-Senior Prom.) Although a certain freshman ’'flash” was inclined to put down the juniors in her column as Bah- humbug individuals, ’’the Class of 71 spent a busy and rewarding year proving her wrong. It was juniors who scored high- est as a class on the Iowa tests... juniors who even yelled louder than seniors or sophomores once in awhile... and of course, junior class president Steve Johnson gave his class glory as he out- ate all other class presidents when it came to cream pies. The Class of f71 highlighted its busy year with the long (but fun-filled) hours it spent planning, decorating and attending the Junior-Senior Prom. As we look back, we realize it was a year of ’lasts” — our last high school football game. Homecoming, Prom, book report, hot lunch, high school crushes, and most of all our last chance to be together as a class. The end of these memorable events is only a beginning of new and unpredictable things to come.
