Milbank High School has a reputation of being outstanding in the field of football. For the past four years the Bulldogs had not been beaten. The 1962 football team worked hard to make this reputation grow stronger and to make their town proud of them. Their hard work was rewarded as they carried this record on to five years of consecutive victories. The 1962 edition of the MHS football Bulldogs won many outstanding honors for their efforts on the gridiron. They won the fifth successive Northeast Conference championship and by adding their wins to past victories they made the record 42 successive wins in football for a new South Dakota record. They received a No. 1 rating in the Class A division of high schools for South Dakota, as selected by staff members of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. The Bulldogs placed in numerous national polls and received the honor of being named Team of the Year in South Dakota by the sports writers of this state. Their coach, Rollie Greeno, one of the prominent family of Greeno Brothers, is a former holder of Coach of the Year Title. With all these honors, the Milbank High School football team for 1962 was surely a winning team and the players champions in every way possible. So to you, the 1962 MHS football team and your coach, because of your outstanding record in football which has brought honor and fame to Milbank High School, we proudly dedicate this annual. 2 FOREWORD Throughout the years, Milbank has developed into a football town with much enthusiasm shown by everyone. Here at Milbank High School football has been an outstanding sport with our teams in the last few years winning many honors. With these thoughts in mind, we have carried out a football theme in the follow- ing pages of this book. We sincerely hope that it will serve as a memory of our football achievements and the 1962-1963 school year at Milbank High School. 3 CONTENTS Faculty and Administration 5 Organizations 11 Special Events and Activities 27 Sports 37 Honors 45 Classes 49 Seniors 61 CENTRAL SCHOOL 4 KOCH SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION AND ADMINISTRATION ARTHUR B. To be eligible for this honor, the student must rank in the upper one-third of his class scholas- tically, be active in his community, school, and church, and demonstrate qualities of leadership. Girls and Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. Aux- iliary. It includes a week of the study of our government and how it operates. Students are given an opportunity to learn basic principles by putting them into effect. Left to Right: Frances Howard, Elwood Dahlberg, D'Ann Kyrk These students have been selected to parti- cipate in the Science Field Trip to be held June 10-15. All expenses of these students, after they join the group, will be financed by the National Science Foundation, under the sponsorship of the South Dakota Academy of Science. Selection was based on the application that the student submit- ted which included their academic record and a letter indicating their interest and activities in science. These participants are invited to a meeting in Rapid City April 26 and 27 to be recognized for the honor that they have achieved. Meetings are scheduled to outline the plans and basic require- ments for this field trip. The trip will consist of a 1,400 mile journey originating at Sioux Falls, S. Dak. and termin- ating at Devil's Tower in Wyoming. 47 Judith Skaarer, Betty Crocker Winner MR. TOUCHDOWN Jim Nixon, Athlete of the Year Judith Skaarer won the Betty Crocker Homemaker of To- morrow Contest at Milbank High School enabling her to repre- sent her school in the state contest. Jim Nixon was chosen the High School Athlete of the Year for 1962 in South Dakota. He shared this honor with Doug Barth, a member of the team from Mitchell. Jim has been a varsity team member in three sports for four years. He was named quarterback on the Class A All-State first team. He is co-holder of the N.E.C. pole vault record. He received honorable mention on the All-State Basketball Team as a junior. Milbank High School is very proud that an athlete from our senior class would be chosen for this special honor. As a result of a tape recording of his playing, John Ander- son, at that time a Milbank High School Freshman, was chosen to play with the International Peace Garden Music Camp Band. On his all-expense paid trip John toured Canada, the United States, France, England, and Switzerland with this group. This honor is proof of his abilities in the field of music. And because of his accomplishments, John is a real credit to Mil- bank High School. HE PLAYED ON OTHER FIELDS 48 RESERVES SEVENTH GRADE EAST Left to Right, Row 1: V. Anger hofer, D. Engebretson, T. SECOND DOWN With a first down to their name the Sophomores began their second year of the game with eager ex- pectations. Expectations that could only have been met with plenty of time and energy. But, despite the hard work spent in attaining their goal, they found time to call time out to excel in extra-cur- ricular activities such as debate, declam, band, chorus, glee club, and others. With so much to do, time passed quickly for the Sophomores and before they knew it, their ex- pectations were met. They had made their second down. LIVELY, ISN'T HE? In spite of the hard work that is necessary to accomplish the third down, they found extra en- ergy to enroll in activities such as debate, declam, paper staff, chorus, glee club, and others. Their most important project was the Prom, which they sponsored and presented for the Seniors. The class play was also a successful activity of the Juniors. After what seemed an eternity, it became ap- parent that their goal was just ahead. At last they had gained their third down. w Raymond Will Linda Wise JUNIORS Daniel Veen Joyce Veen Andrew Vissers David Vogel Dennis White Ralph Whiting 60 VARSITY IN MEMORIAM On Tuesday, March 5, William J. Rethke passed away after an illness of seven weeks. Billy was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Rethke. He was a member of the Senior class at Milbank High School when he became ill with cancer. A valuable member of his class, Billy was respected and admired by his fellow classmates and his teachers at Milbank High School. He was a young man of high spirit and during his last days, although suffering great pain, remained uncomplaining and cheerful. Billy bad many friends who were bereaved by his tragic death, but Billy will live on in our memories. We will always remember his as he was — a kind, generous person with a cheerful smile and a friendly hello for everyone. It was with this thought in mind that they pushed onward through their fourth season. They found it necessary to participate in band, glee club, chorus, F. F. A., F. H. A., debate, declam, paper staff, and other activities to gain yardage toward their goals. Through hard work, determination, and the generous en- couragement of their loyal fans, the Seniors scored their touch- down on May 29, 1963, at the Milbank Ball Park. This was the end of the game for the Seniors. As they grad- uated, they all realized that, although they had scored one touchdown, there were many touchdowns left to score in future games. They have many fields left on which to perform. Whe- ther it be the field of business, science, education, or any other, they know it, too, means using many of the same qualities the Senior Class showed as they scored their touchdown.
