DEDICATION DARELL PRIBYL We, the Kennel Staff of the Class of I960, employ this yearbook as a means of expressing our gratitude to our ad- viser, Darell Pribyl, whose interest, patience, and guiding hand have always been there to help us along when the road be- came stony. Besides being the adviser for our annual, Mr. Pribyl is the lab sciences instructor at MHS. He is also the adviser for Camera Club, director of Visual Aids, and manages the school picture program. Even with all of this, Mr. Pribyl still finds the time to take an active part in civic affairs. To you, Mr. Pribyl, we dedicate the Kennel of 1960 and hope that it will, in some way, express our appreciation for your unselfish devotion to the completion and perfection of our annual. These goals, set by each and every student in Milbank High School, are being reached every day, and higher goals are being set. This year, as in the past, the seniors have arrived at a much strived for goal—Commencement. The memories of plays, parties, games, meetings, and, above all, friends, are never to be forgotten. Inscribed in this annual, you will find a lasting remembrance of your school days. We sincerely hope this year book will be of such value to you that you will find a memory stored away In its pages each time you leaf through it. SPORTS MIGHTY BULLDOGS SWEEP (ONFERENCE HONORS The Bulldogs completed one of the most success- ful athletic seasons in the history of MHS this year by taking the conference titles in all sports — Football, Basketball, Cross Country, and Track. Their power lay in the fact that each of them had poise and ability which they combined into a well working machine that proved to be too much for their opponents. Congratulations to all our Bulldogs. The Bulldogs' undefeated season stretched their winning streak to 18 in a row. The power of this years team is shown by the fact that 11 members were named to the All-State Football Squad. Roland Johnson and Roger O- Shaughnessy were selected to the first team, Mike Raffety to the second team, and Jack Price to the third team. Receiving Honorable Mention were Tom Schlosser, Roger Burns, Ron Boe, Don Larson, John Bruce, Milford Jack- son, and Ken Derrick. A FOOTBALL Row 1: J. Lowthian, D. Anderson, R. Camus, J. Price, R. DEBATE Arguing the labor question, the experienced debaters began the season with a trip to Moorhead, Minn., Dec. 3-5. Other weekends found the debaters exercising their vocal cords at Brookings, Vermillion, Huron, Sioux Falls, and Redfield; they ended the regular season with a 34-25 record. The experienced debaters won for their coach the Outstanding Coach Award in the Aber- deen tourney with a second place record of 7-3, and, tying for first, they took second place in the NES meet in Milbank behind Doland. Co-champions in the regional debate tourney, Milbank and Watertown were award- ed individual trophies with the privilege of entering the State tournament at Huron on April 1-2. The inexperienced debate squad, 21 strong, also had the opportunity to attend quite a few tournaments, and did very well, closing the season with a 19-26 record. Adding to the awards at the NSTC meet, the squad tied for third place in the B division. A DEBATE Ann Mikkelson, Judy Leonhardt, Colleen Dockter, Janet Reiners, Susan Forman, Barbara Aldrich. The highlight of the scene was a large shiny blue heart accentuated by Japanese lanterns, wind chimes, a multitude of gaily col- ored balloons, and confetti. Emotions ran high as Janet Engebretson and Milford Jackson were crowned royalty by Karen Crowl and Kenny Mosey, king and queen of 1958. Charles Nelson serenaded the queen with My Heart Stood Still. Friday evening was highlighted by a 40 to 12 victory over Redfield, and a dance with Leo Fortin and his orchestra. The young people of every ancestry from Hawaiian to Filipino, adopted by the Reverend Doss and his wife, came to them as small children. They have been raised as a part of this fine and in many ways, typical American family, and are more alike than different. JUNIOR PLAY Maxine Lowe is on trial for her life. She has been accused of mur- dering her husband, Daniel Lowe. Is she guilty or not guilty? This question sets the plot of the story as a young, inexperienced attorney, James Hathaway, tries to defend his client, who is unwilling even to defend herself by taking the stand. As the D. A. Warren Cass pre- sents the picture of a hardened attorney, who knows every trick in the book, and uses most of them to convict Maxine Lowe. The climax is reached as the young girl attorney, Jessalyn Mere- dith, who is the D. A.'s assistant, discovers that she is the daughter of the woman on trial, Maxine Lowe. The final curtain closes on a highly emotional acquittal of Max- ine Lowe as she is reunited with her daughter. And now, my competent jury, the decision is yours! The theme, Stairway to the Stars, was followed throughout the banquet and prom. Roger O'Shaughnessy was master of ceremonies at the banquet which began at 6:30 p.m. Short speeches were given by Mike Raffety, Ann Mikkelson, Judy Leonhardt, and John Lowthian. Betty Jo White with her selection of Stairway to the Stars and Gail Torness with Star Dust provided entertainment for the guests. The climax of a thrilling evening was the Grand March which was led by the junior and senior class officers. Following the theme, the girls descended a blue-carpeted stairway and were met by their escorts. Mr. Swanson announced the couples as they passed through a large silver star. Afterwards the guests whirled through the even- ing under a star-studded sky. The Gaylords supplied the music for the evening. The Kiwanis Club held a buffet lunch after the dance for the juniors and seniors and their dates; this was followed by a midnight movie at the theater. Private parties and picnics provided amusement for the prom-goers after the show. Wait for me, Doug! FRESHMEN FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS Vice president, Virginia Pauli; Secretary-treasurer, Diane Harrison; President, Linda Grams. THE FRESHMEN After the first bewildering weeks of being a little green freshman, the frosh began working to form the foundation of their high school career. Besides the hours spent in class work, the extra curricular activities attracted many students. The boys took part in all forms of sports including football, basketball, and track. Several boys made the B basketball and football teams. Also many students contributed to the success of band, chorus, glee club, declam, debate, F. F. A., F. H. A., and many other activities. Ruth Roberts was the only freshman to be accepted in the All-State band which is a great honor for any student. The freshmen have greatly enjoyed their first year of high school with its busy schedule, and are looking forward with eagerness and anticipation for the three years yet to come. THE SOPHOMORES Standing on the second step, the sophomores have proven themselves worthy in their every conquest. Scholasticly the sophomore class as a whole ranks very high. Even in the midst of geom- etry, biology, and English, the sophomores found time for extra-curricular activities, and likewise, did well in them. Members of the sophomore class participated in football, declam, basketball, debate, paper staff, music, cheerleading, and track. Many students won honors in these groups. With spring comes the closing of school. This brings to an end the sophmores' stop on the second step. CHICAGO TRIP The long awaited Chicago trip has come and passed, and what happened during the escapade is a story for the records, although some of the seniors hope that it isn't recorded. Odd jobs, selling of candy and wreaths, and wash- ing cars combined with the senior class play accounted for a goodly amount of the total cost of the trip. What wasn't made from the aforesaid projects came out of the senior's pockets and all agree that it was well worth the cost. On behalf of the Senior class, we extend our thanks to the counselors, who were so understand- ing and patient with us. Last, but not least, a word of advice to the under- classmen, BE PREPARED . . .
