i 55 uuiiaog published by the senior class Editor: Mary Garvey Assistant Editor: Margaret Nef d visor: Darell Pribyl DEDICATION We, the 1955 graduating class of Milbank High School, wish to employ this means to perpetuate the memory of our departed class- mate, Donald Veen. Donald was fatally injured November 7, 1954, when the truck in which he was riding struck a rock and was upset. At the time of the mishap he was engaged in a favorite leisure time activity, hunting. Don attended MHS up to the time of his death and was an active member of FFA. His quiet but friendly manner will forever linger in our minds and with deepest sympathy to his family and friends, we fondly dedicate this 1955 Bulldog to his mem- ory. A new building, up to date books, and modern furnishings will not give an education to anyone. It is the teachers themselves that make the school what it is. During the four years that most of us have or will spend in Milbank High, we have come under the authority of many faculty members, young and old, experienced and fresh-from-college. While certainly we could not expect to like them all, most of us can truthfully say that we learned much from our teach- ers. A perfectionist might find fault with one teacher’s appearance, another’s discipline and a third’s method of teaching but few. if any, of us are in a position to criticize. If you have not already done so, realize now that teachers, like everyone else, are human beings with faults and failings. We, the Senior Class of 1955, want to take this opportunity to extend our best wishes to all the mem- bers of the MHS faculty. We know that at times we have stretched your patience to the breaking point but underneath, we do appreciate all that you have done for us; and next year, when we are gone, we hope that you will think back to our four years here and say, “They weren’t really so bad.” 7 Mrs. Larson N. CHICAGO TRIP March 31 was the big day for Ml IS seniors, this day marked the annual Senior Education Day tour to Chicago. “Chicago By Night” was the first adventure on Thursday evening. Don McNeil’s radio show, the Chicago Board of Trade, and a free night out on the town highlighted Friday. The Lincoln Park Zoo, the Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aqua ium, and The Museum of Science and In- dustry were the thrills on Saturday. Sunday noon the seniors arrived home; they were tired but happy and ready to go again. Everyone agreed that the tour proved educational as well as entertaining. 15 JUNIOR CLASS The class of 56 has been going full-speed ahead and will soon reach their destination—becoming seniors. The juniors probably experienced this year as their most thrilling one. The juniors selected as their class officers Jack Boerger, president; Ann Jurgens, secretary-treasurer; Charles Thomp- son, vice-president. Mr. Swanson was their class advisor. Homecoming Homecoming festivities got under way October 14 with the coronation of Larry Van Ray and Joan Gill as king and queen. They were attended by Margaret Nef, Donna Boerger, Glenn Robel, and Jim Farrell, seniors; Geraldine McFarland and Larry Lewis, juniors; Janice Nord and Larry Johns, sophomores; Marilyn Williams and Edward Flanery, freshmen. A pep fest and bonfire following the coronation served to arouse the spirits of students of Milbank High. The following day began with a parade down Main Street. Many floats from the city schools were entered and also a few from the country. First prize in the high school division was taken by the M Club, second by the F. H. A., and third by the Driver's Education class. The seventh grade won top honors in the grade school division, with the east third grade taking second, and the west second grade, third. That night the Bulldogs met the Sisseton Redmen on the gridiron. The loss did not affect the spirits of the fans, for a successful Homecoming dance was held in the high school gym immediately after the game. This brought to an end Homecoming, 1954. 26 King Larry VanRay Queen Joan Gil Juniors Marilyn Willett, Deanna Fenhaus, Donna Williams St. Hubert Hotel Seniors Elaine Wendt, Margie Huben, Roselyn Schmitt, Janice Mitchell, Patsy Tillemans 27 PROM The Junior-Senior Prom was one of the main events of the school year. Only five lettermen returned from last year's squad. The lettermen—Francis Pepka, Allen Liebe, Larry Lewis, Byron Reents, and Merl Foss—along with several newcomers formed the backbone of the squad. Coach Bruce Canatsy assisted by Mr. Charles Hurney, both new coaches this year at M.H.S., did quite well with the young and inexperienced team. Lewis, a junior, placed consistently in the pole vault for the Bulldogs. Cheerleaders A touch of variety was added this year to the MHS cheering squad when the number of A team cheerleaders was increased from four to six by a vote of the student body. The sextet, though confronted with cold football weather and a losing basketball sea- son, never gave up, but were always ready to lead the Milbank fans in a cheer for the home team. The “B cheering squad, which remained four in number, also did their part in rais- ing the morale of the Bulldogs when defeated and sustaining the high spirits at the time of victory.
