HISTORY OF MILAN SCHOOL A rich heritage for education awaits the students ofpresent-dayMi1anSchoo1 The many advantages which you now enjoy have come from the following history. At Milan village, in 1819, Miss Susie Williams opened the first school, in barn owned by Squire Merry. The second schoolhouse in the township was erecte where the town hall now stands. In 1324, the old yellow schoolhouse was built o West Church Street, afterwards removed to Center Street, and finally, with th other small school buildings, converted into the Cooper Business Block at the tc of the hill. When the present public school system was inaugurated in 1849, Milan wa prompt to avail herself of its privileges, but with considerable debate and excite ment. The old brick school building on South Center Street was erected in 1850, th year after the enabling law was passed, and at that time was one of the most sub stantial and convenient public school buildings in the state. A fine and beautiful structure of brick, trimmed in sandstone, was built i 1884. lt was in the form of a cross, had all modern conveniences, and was we lighted. The architecture was very fine. An addition was added to this school in 1910, which is the present north win of the elementary school. In 1922, everything was torn down but the addition, az a new building erected. In 1953, this building was modernized and expanded and th high school with a new library was completed in 1959. ln 1963, the basement unde the high school wing was completed to give additional space. Our school is chartered by the State of Ohio as a first class, four-year hi school. It is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondar Schools. This is the largest accrediting agency in the United States.. Our graduates, if recommended by the school, are accepted byany accredite college or university. 5 el SHES MW W 'uf' MRS.
