I find myself in a room where several of the Junior boys have assembled. It seems they have joined the Knights of Columbus and they are about to begin their weekly meeting. Just as the meeting is called to order, the door flies open and there stands Gordon Waddle — much embarrassed, but smiling. We are surprised to find that he is just arriving — late, as usual — to the Junior-Senior banquet held ten years ago. The boys, of course, explain to Gordie that he is a bit late. Finding that he is TEN YEARS late, he inquires about his former classmates, as he wishes to see them. This is what the boys are telling him . . . Myrtle Downing was married soon af- ter graduation and is now living with her husband and two children in a small house trailer near Turtle Creek in Milan. Leo- nora Miller is Myrtle’s maid, but is still hoping and working for a married future. Louis Stuckey has replaced Henry Barnes as caretaker of the cemetery, but is not too successful, as there have been many reports that he spends most of his time fishing in the cemetery pond. Donna Stoll has established her own business. This concern is about a half mile from Milan, on Old Plank Road. The name of it is “Donna’s Wrecking.” Her specialty, it is said, is Fords and Buicks which she completely wrecks, personally. Pvt. Bob Koch and former Mary Lou Rice are sharing barracks with Lt. Cliff Mills and the former Zanne Masey. Mary Lou replaced Zanne as the head hash- slinger when Zanne was offered a job as drum majorette in the Army band. At the death of Mrs. Sloane, the late daughter of Thomas Alva Edison, the Edison Birthplace was willed to Wilma Uther because of her fine efficiency as a former hostess. Bernice Weilnau is living in complete bliss and is rolling in money, being the square-dance caller on that favorite radio program, “Grand Ole Opry.” Glen Springer has bought all of Frank Russell’s farms and has become a very successful farmer. Edelle Treon lives near Koch’s and Mills’ barracks as she has become a tank- driver in the Army. Bob Molnar is right guard for the Cleveland Browns. Lavern Henson has the honor of be- ing campaign-manager for Donna Hermes, who is running for the presidency of Wives of America Club. Nancy Sherwood is the Fuller-Brush woman between Cleveland and Detroit. This route is very convenient for Nancy, as it keeps her in close contact with her two husbands, who are kept apart by the distance between the two cities. Lyle Riehm and Mr. Eckler have recent- ly struck it rich, after finally discovering perpetual motion. Shirley Scheid is a dancer for the Bal- let Rouse Dancing Academy in Cleveland. After nine long, but well spent, years in college, John Burley has at last man- aged to acquire the honorable degree of D.D.D. (dirty-ditch-digger). Red-nosed Russ Stower is the chief cider-fermenter for Robertson’s Orchards. Elsie Mortensen is a model for the New York branch of the Powers’ School of Modeling. Judy Risden owns a traveling medicine show. Pat Russ has become an understudy in the finer arts of typing and shorthand under Miss Arlene Wollin. Don Doerner is a happy custodian at the Andrews School for Girls, at Willough- by, where Pat Limbird is teaching retail- ing. The boys have not heard too much in- formation about Barbara LaVine Rospert lately, but the last they heard she was the proud mother of seven lovely children. With this morsel of information, Gordie drives off, resolving never to be late again. 13 CLASS WILL • • • Mr. Superintendent, Friends, Teachers, Fellow Classmates: The Class of 1952, about to die, salutes you! Contrary to the custom in such cases, and loath as are all members of my con- servative profession to establish prece- dents, only at the request of my noble client, Fifty-two, have I called you to- gether, before her death, to hear her will and to receive her gifts. I was persuaded to this action by the unusual circumstances of my client. I dread to tell you, but be calm, the doctor is here ready to revive all fainting ones, but he can’t attend too many. Here is my secret. Keep it well! A consultation of doctors was called together on Friday, May 16, 1952, doctors never known to fail in their prognostica- tions. They have announced that on Thursday, May twenty-ninth, the Class of Fifty-two must pass on. Had I known what a commotion you’d raise, and how badly you would feel, the Superintendent could not have dragged this secret from me. My client wishes me to state that, owing to a lightness in the head, caused by its gradual swelling dur- ing the last four years, and a heaviness in the heart and other organs, caused by thoughts of parting and over-feasting, re- spectively, she may be mistaken in her inventory, but such as she thinks she has, she gives to you, praying that you may not believe that it is only because she can not keep her goods that she is generous. We, the Class of Fifty-two, being about to leave this sphere, in full possession of a sound mind, memory and understanding, do make and publish this our last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills by us at any time heretofore made. And first we do direct that our funeral services shall be conducted by our friends and well-wishers, the faculty, only enjoin- ing that the funeral be carried on with all the dignity and pomp our situation in the high school has merited. As to such estate as it has pleased the fates our own strong arms to give us, we do dispose of the same as follows: Item: We give and bequeath to the faculty, restful nights and peaceful dreams. We promise them a rest from Fifty-two’s posters. No more will we be called to bend our haughty knee, no more will they be pained to refuse. It has been hard to have our fondest wishes thwart- ed: it must have been harder for them to refuse so fair a pleader. They have done their duty, and they have their reward. But oh! how much easier had it been for them and for us if they had said “Yes,” especially to a Junior play. Fifty-two has always been modest and retiring and she does not now want to appear prominent. Item: We give and bequeath to the Junior Class the following advice, accept- ing that which leads them to glory: learn to work if not to win; development comes sooner through bearing failures than suc- cesses. It isn’t fun, but still, look at Fifty- two and be encouraged. Item: The subjoined list will be rec- ognized as entailed estates to which we do declare the Class of Fifty-three the real and rightful successors: 14 1. The Senior seats in the Office, al- though some of the Juniors have had to use them. The seats in the study hall at present are being occupied by Fifty-two, but will soon be vacated. We hope Fifty- three will be as fond of the front row of seats as we have been. Let every member show her gratitude for the gift by being promptly in her seat ench morning. 2. We are in very unusual financial condition, $40.00 in-the-hole. The work, the worry and the glory are now in other hands. 3. We give and bequeath to the Junior Class all such boys as they have, trusting that they may be able to hold firmly to them and steer them firmly next year through the gates of Commencement. The following may seem trifling be- quests, but we hope that they may be ac- cepted, not as worthless things lavishly thrown away because we can no longer keep them, but as valuable assets to those who may receive them, and a continual reminder of the generosity of heart dis- played on our free and full bestowal: 1, Bernice Weilnau, will my ability to get out of class as often as I did to any- one in the Junior Class lucky enough to do it. I, Wilma Uther, will my ability to have such a good time in Washington to Bar- bara Beese and Thalia Shupe. Also my good bookkeeping grades to anyone who needs them. I, Zanne Masey, will my trouble as Class secretary-treasurer to anyone elect- ed to that job, and my typing class trou- bles to Ida Sax. I, John Burley, will my ability to have a good time after my basketball games and my good old Ford, nothing like them, to Don McPeek. I, Clifford Mills, will to JoAnn Stower my ability to get along with Russell, also my Ford to Dorothy Finnen to get back and forth to North Fairfield. I, Leonora Miller, will my ability to keep my head and my soft-spoken manner, to Barbara Keller. I, Myrtle Downing, will my ability to be faithful to Uncle Sam’s boys to Juanita Russ. I, Donald Doerner, will my ability to get along with girls from Andrews to Mike Mcllrath and Bob Ohly. I, Edelle Treon, will my ability to en- joy the evenings as well as the days in Washington to Mabel Morrow and Bev- erly Schnee. I, Lyle Riehm, will my musical ability to Barbara Beese and Richard Gassman, feeling that they need it more than I do. I, Donna Hermes, will to Betty Stoll the ability to get the car only when nec- essary. I, Gordon Waddle, will to Gerald Sei- bcrth the ability to find my way to Berlin Heights and my pitching ability to some Junior boy because they are going to need it. I, Donna Stoll, will to Nancy Riley and Bob Bickley my abiilty to get along with Seniors and Sophomores. I, Bob Koch, will to Richard Smith, my car because it has no rumble seat. I, Pat Russ, will my love for the farm to Darlene Wolverton. I, Louis Stuckey, will my bicycle for Virginia Meyers to get back and forth to North Fairfield. I, Judy Risden, will Marianne Westcott my short hair and my good times in typ- ing class to Marjorie Molnar. I, Glenn Springer, will to Nancy Mel- lon my quiet manner. I, Nancy Sherwood, will my shorthand ability to any Junior who finds he needs it worse than I do. 15 I, Bob Molnar, will a new drug which I completed in Chemistry class that al- lows a person to live without work, to Bill Greer. I, Elsie Mortensen, will my show busi- ness and queenly honors to Shirley Eddy. I, Mary Lou Rice, will my ability to get to school on time to Jim Finnen. I, Russell Stower, will my wonderful memory for poems in English to Jennings Hibbard and my basketball ability to Richard Gassman. I, Lavern Henson, will my public- speaking ability to Vivian Oney. I, Shirley Scheid, will my dancing ability to Richard Smith and to Vivian Oney I will my dislike of poodle haircuts. We, Nancy Sherwood and Z a n n e Masey, will to Sue Risden and Marilyn Balcom our cheerleading ability, what little there is of it. We, the Senior girls, will to the Junior boys the ability to write such fine posters and hang them in the study hall, and we also will to the Junior girls our fine co- operation and ability to get along with us. We, the Class of 1952 will the follow- ing: To Mr. Lindecamp — all our extra money for a new lab because we played such havoc with the present one. To Mr. Eckler—many more class trips to Washington, and more shorthand classes. To Mr. Leslie — as good an attentive, eager-to-learn, and well-behaved psychol- ogy class next year as the one he had this year. To Miss Wollin—twenty more practice sets a year for her bookkeeping class and our old bookkeeping workbooks. To Mrs. White—a wonderful cast and a class play to equal this year’s. To Mrs. Ankrom—an American his- tory class as fine as ours. To Mr. Furlong — a basketball team next year to out-rate all others. Even bet- ter than this year’s, although they’re los- ing good players. To Miss Fruth — many more Junior- Senior proms as wonderful as this one. Nice work, Miss Fruth. Also we will her many more picnics and home nursing courses. To Mr. Steele—p h y s i c al education classes of girls as co-operative as he had this year in choosing sports participation. To Mr. Hendricks—another class play in which to exhibit a beautiful master- piece of art as in the Crazy Smith Family. Thank you, Mr. Hendricks. To Miss Willis—a much better behav- ed mixed chorus upon our leaving and a sextette as good as this year’s, although it will be hard to find them as good as Pat, Elsie, and Judy. To Mr. Smith—classes with the Sen- iors’ musical ability. To Mr. Jones—we give and bequeath for his use and benefit, when he sees fit, to use some of the knowledge received from us at various times. To all the teachers we give and be- queath all the startling information we have given them at whatsoever times we may have written quizzes and examina- tions, in the education of our successors. The latter matter is, however, entirely at their discretion. And we do hereby constitute and ap- point, Mr. Jones, sole executor of this our last will and testament. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, We the Class of Fifty-two, the testators, have to this our will, written on some left-over typing paper, set our hand and seal, this seventeenth day of May, in the year of our Lord, OneThousand Nine Hundred and Fifty-two. 16 JUNIORS . . .
