Homecoming Candidates Presented Traditional at Mifflin is the assembly held to present to the student body those senior girls selected by an all-school vote to run for Homecoming Queen. Each girl chooses an escort and prepares a short autobiographical sketch to be read as she is formally introduced to the students. Each girl is asked to respond extemporaneously to individual questions, giving the voters a criteria other than beauty alone from which to make a decision. The five finalists comprise the Homecoming Court and are honored at both the Homecom- ing Football Game and Dance. Valerie Selected 1980 Queen 1. The cheerleaders present the traditional roses. 2. ' ■j ■■■: ' - . ' ; :: F i J B K iV ■ ly« Lady Punchers Show Opponents One-Two-Punch With the dual scoring threat of Kellie Simpson and Julia Brooks, the Lady Punchers pose a threat to any opponent. Coached by Ernie Howard, these roundballers have attracted quite a following. Varsity Squad Earns 14-6 Record Varsity Team: Row 1: Craig Reeves, Randy Clarkson, and Eric Shepherd. Row 2: Pat Hadley, Eric Comley, Terry Poindexter, Marty Sutton, Angelo Chinn, and Tom Johnson. Row 3: Head Coach John Smith; Statisticians Tonia Rayford, Debbie Ketner, and Stacy Smith; Manager Donald Myers; and Assistant Coach Don Bess. With improved play from all players in the program, Mifflin can again be a factor in the tough City League North Section and Central District AAA Tournament. They beat a Dayton Jefferson team in Dayton that averaged 6 ' 1 per man; beat an undefeated Van Wert team in Van Wert; and beat eventual City Champion Central 73-61. Other wins came over (ronton and Centennial, teams which eventually advanced to the final 16 in the state tournament. Perhaps the most exciting game of the year was a narrow 2 point loss at Northland to a team that eventually was Central District Champion. Players Honored Award winners on this team captained by Eric Shepherd, Pat Hadley, and Ron Gaston include Best Defensive Player — Eric Shepherd; Most Post Feeds — Randy Clarkson, Most Charges — Pat Hadley, Most Improved — Marty Sutton, and Leading Foulshooter — Marty Sutton. Other honors were granted to Eric Shepherd, named to 2nd Team All- City and All District Honorable Mention; and to Pat Hadley, Marty Sutton, and Randy Clarkson, All-City Honorable Mention. Girls Perform Well in Track and Field Jacki Bell and Robin Scott show the concentration and determination which led to the girls ' track team ' s City League Championship. A strong team effort is necessary to qualify eight girls in the High School State Track Meet. Coached by Bob King and Ken Jones, these girls demonstrate the school motto of pride and excellence. Inexperience Hurts Team The boys ' track team, coached by Stan Deibert and Milburn Johnson, were a young team. Captain Terry Oliver who received the Leadership Award, Most Valuable Player Terry Poindexter, and Ben Tyson, were the outstanding members of the squad. Hopefully the experience that the squad gained this year will help us be much more competitive next year, said Deibert. m Tennis Team Needs Depth Niels Petersen coaches both the boys ' and girls ' tennis teams. Increased participation is needed for Mifflin to become competitive on the courts. Shepherd Earns Record Third All-City The team finished up with a 9-16 record including a 5-2 tournament win.
