GOLF TEAM SUFFER FORFEITS Definitely minor sports at Mifflin, both wrestling and golf fail to attract enough par- ticipants to field com- plete teams. Many matches are forfeited simply because of a lack of competitors. Though the individual team members do credible jobs, the teams are severely handicapped by the small member- ship. Coaches Atwell, )ones, and Thomas hope that the incoming Freshmen and Sopho- mores next year will increase the sizes of the teams and improve their chances for a win- ning season. m -m m yr t bo 6A9EBALL REBUILDS Experiencing a losing season with a 6-15-1 record, the young Punchers are looking to next season. Despite the poor showing, four individu- als were singled out for All-City honors. For the second time Eric Shep- herd made the first team and )ohn McKinney, Dennis Mathess, and Andrew Carson made honorable mention. The statistics released by Head Coach Baum and Assistant Coach Weaver reveal why these players were accorded this honor. Eric Shepherd led the team with 29 hits and a batting average of .468. He had 20 stolen bases to his credit. John McKinney led the team in doubles (11), triples (2), homer- uns(3), R.B.I. ' s(24), and stolen bases (24). Heported a batting average of .379. Dennis Mattess con- tributed 27 hits and Andrew Carson threw 56 strikeouts to finish with an E.R.A. of 1.94. TENNIS ANYONE? Tennis is a new sport at Mifflin. The team is growing as tennis gains in popularity in the area. Players compete in both singles and dou- bles on a city wide basis with the state tourna- ment as the finale of the season. Mifflin players are becoming more com- petitive and Coach Peterson feels that next year ' s team will benefit from the influx of Fresh- men. SPEED- 8TER8 8UPERI0R The Girls ' Track Team at Mifflin enjoys a state- wide reputation for excellence. Coach King and Assistant Coach Jones were determined to maintain the high standards of the past. Despite fielding a very young and inexpe- rienced team, Mifflin performed like veter- ans. DEFEND- ING CHAMP- I0N9 9TAND- OUTS The Boys ' Track Team, defending state champions, were out to repeat their perform- ance. Head Coach Law- rence and Assistant Coach Diebert hoped to equal the past teams ' records. In 1975 they were state champs; in 76 they finished third in the state; in 78 they ended up fourth in the state and in 79 they once again won the state championship. Although the cham- pionship in 1980 eluded them, these athletes are still champions, win- ners to the Mifflin stu- dent body they repre- sent. k ' ? ' •■.
