I , YJ I., , 1 iv Dear Midwood Seniors: It is traditional that the principal of a high school always remind the graduates of everything they owe their alma mater - the education, the good times, the dedication of faculty to the Welfare of students. However, this year I would break with tradition and thank you, the graduates, for what you have done for Midwood. In this, your senior year, New York City has found itself in the deepest financial crisis in its history. The dimensions of this crisis have affected the schools Very deeply and, in some cases, schools have functioned with extreme difficulty. Midwood has stayed afloat with a buoyancy that amazes those who look upon her, andnl attribute this to the dedication and hard Work of her seniors. This year you have with your leadership ensured a wonderful tone in our school. You have kept all extracurricular activities and student life vibrant. .You have, in short, guaranteed that those who come after you will have the fine school you came into as freshmen and sophomores. The faculty and the student body - present and those to come - salute you and Wish you the very best success in your future endeavors. Arista ,,- I- Arista is an organization designed to recognize and reward outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service and character. Midwood's Arista is, and always has been one of the city's finest. This year, due to budget cuts, the aid of Arista members in tutoring and working in school offices has been needed and appreciated more than ever.. We hope, as do the other Arista and Archon Leaders, that with the help of Mrs. F. Lewis future senior members will be able to function effectively and maintain the high standards that are synonomous with Midwood High School. Midwood's Archon has maintained the high standards for which it is famous under the supervision of Mrs. F. Lewis. Archon stimulates students to become actively involved in Midwoodis many activities while providing its offices with additional help when required. The work done by Archon members is much appreciated and IS rewarding for all involved. We are sure that with the continued assistance of Mrs. F. Model Congress is a vehical for learn- ing about the legislative process and op- eration of our Government. Students from across the Eastern Seaboard play the parts of Senators and Representa- tives during one very hectic week-end in May. It is after two false starts, one chronic case of the Let's get a faculty advisor blues , and months of preparation by scores of work-crazed Midwood stu- dents that we can bring to Midwood the sixth annual Model Congress. High standards have been set before us, and with some luck, we will make this Con- gress one that will provide these young people with an understanding of what makes our government work. Whatever the outcome of the week- end, we, the chairpeople, know that Congress is a real way to learn and work and love. It is something that will be remembered as a very special part of our years at Midwood. The club not only enables people to play these games but to meet others with interests similar to their own. If Argus is the mind of Midwood High School, then Patterns is its heart. To our humble little box in the English Office come the sto- ries, poems, and creative energy of the Midwood students: the torrent of feeling that comes from being young. It is the magazine of every Mid- wood student, because each article and drawing reflects today's issues, as students see them. It experi- ments fearlessly with new forms and ideas. Itls tough sometimes, with no office, and funds to match. But the1'e's one thing we Patterns peo- ple have in abundanceg we're all heart. Carole Bernstein Jennifer Halpern Rapport, the magazine of the department of foreign languages, has been in existence for three years. Its name is derived from the close relationships which foreign language helps to establish among all people. The knowledge of sec- ond and third languages opens doors to cultural appreciation and understanding which form the ba- sis of a good education. Our motto is Rap with Rapport and to rap well one should know the languages of one's neighbors. Patterns Mrs. Silverstein, Faculty Advisor. Lemma Although Lemma is the smallest and least known departmental publication of Midwood, it is only so because it was initiated just last year. It does, however, have an ex- cellent albeit short, tradition of mathematical journalism. Its aim is to provide interest and involve- ment in mathematics for all Mid- wood students, and an outlet for creativity for those already inter- ested. Guy Jacobson For the non-athletic among us, for the ones who can't swing a bat or catch a ball, who can't throw a spiral or swish a basket, there is still a team for you- the Math team. The senior team meets five times a term, the junior time, three. Over the years, Midwood has compiled a most impressive re- cord. The graduating seniors have been city champions since they joined the team as sophomores. Next year's seniors give every indi- cation of following in their prede- cessor's footsteps. In this complex, industrialized world in which we live, one tends to overlook or take for granted certain life's plea- sures. The Midwood Bike Club is giving students a chance to slow down and take a look at the World around them. Everyone knows of the physical bene- fits of cycling, but the main purpose of our club is to have fun. Our one-day adventures to various places are a great way to increase one's awareness. When you're passing through an area on a rela- tively slow-moving vehicle, you have a chance to notice things you might ordi- narily overlook. Our rides are a true group experience but cycling can be just as fun alone as with the group. Hopefully our members will continue to enjoy cycling long after they leave Midwood. Stanley Alpert and Paul Weinstein The Ski Club, one of the most vital and significant clubs in Midwood has enjoyed many snowfilled days skiing down New York's slopes. Though we meet infrequently Qneverl we have found enough time to arrange seven trips this year, give or take four. Each one was just as thrilling as the last, if not more or less! Highlights of past trips include skiing, riding up and down on the ski lifts, putting on our boots, eating and staring at the girl who came dressed in a Burger King outfit. Some of the highlights of this year's trigs may be go- ing on the bus and drinking soda. Seri- ously though, as a slim guy once said, Skiing is fundamental. R. The most popular Midwood munchee is the sale of pretzels in the lobby. But the cafeteria food does run a close second. So be nice to a friend, and show him the way Midwood Eats. Sing Three very important years have just ended in our lives. For those involved, SING will remain the clearest memory. But why? We will never see our name on the SING board. Our class was never called up as the winner in any category. It seemed we always watched somebody else enjoying what we so desperately wanted. Yes, the race lasted for three years, but at the finish the starter's pistol blew up in our faces. As years separate us further from SING, though, these values that are now so meaningful to us, will fade away. For in ten years, who will care about the SING board? One remembers the people and the experiences. Those are the memories worth reliving. They last. And what memories! FIRST . . . Let's hear it for that little Sophomore group. A tale of how people from three different junior high! schools acted like they came from three different planets trying to build the Tower of Babel. We emerged as one class, stating unequivocally, two things, We're the Sophomores and we're proud! and No More Skitsf' AND THEN .. . the new and improved Junior class brought to the stage the symbol that our class will be remembered by. For three nights the school was taken over by the Midwood United Liberation Army faffectionately called MULAJ Oh!! Bring back the days of madmen and lumberjacks,.i.e. buffoons, psychopaths and hippies, a time when the mottliest bunch of lbedraggled rebels ever to be pushed in front of an audience captured New York City and the hearts of everyone. We all learned that year that we liked our chickens dead. It truly was a Red, White and BOO! celebration of a Spirits of '76 year. Finally . . . From the deep, dark recesses of a haunted, New England mansion, we flew over the sea to the sands of Egypt to answer the eternal question, Can man handle his own destiny? Senior Sing was conceived, constructed and performed with the idealof having a good time. Once again the asylums were emptied to fill our cast. The actors, stage crew, our phenominal chorus and the most incredible, one and only orchestra in SING history, meshedl together to prove to everyone that we were truly ONE. Yes, who can forget the famous lyric committee. meet- ings filled with chaos, laughter fand an occasional severe injuryj, times when even three months after the fateful nights ended, fanatics still roamed the hallssinging SING songs and muttering jokes from our script? .It's true, there were times of frustration, yet .these do not matter. No matter what the arguments we had with each other, by SING night they all disappeared and you found yourself hugging the person you tried to kill the day before. Three very important years have just ended lin our lives. And for those involved, SING was the best of 'those years. As one continues on his way through the school, he will find several more examples of these people. They are also in the lobby, the halls, Siberia the stairwells, yes . . . and even the auditorium. Most of the time they are harmless, and upon observing them, one finds their habits are somewhat predictable. Yes . . . folks, you guessed it, these people are the infamous Midwood Hangee's or Groupie's. They practice the art of Hangin' Out, a form of relaxing or in some cases escaping the problems of the classroom, the home or even peers. Young and old alike are often caught in the act of Hangin' Out. It's a state of mind, so HANG LOOSE! Look around you. l-low many people in your class seem to be working toward something? l-low about you -are you just letting it all happen, and vaguely hoping that things will work out well for you, or are you trying to exercise some control over your life? Think about the happiest, most suc- cessful men and women you know, or have heard about. l-low many of them do you think got there just waiting to get lucky? Sure, luck has a lot to do with it. But there's a lot ot truth in the famous comment: E harder l worked, the luckier I got. You've got to be ready for luck when it happens. You can't plan your life step by step. 1What a drag it would be, if you couldj But you can decide what you really care about. Not what other people say is important, but what you, privately, know is important -for ygg. Don't talk about it, don't try to hook your friends on it, but keep your eye on it- particularly when you have a decision to make. You earn a little extra spending money. Decision: Do you spend it just because it's there-even though there's nothing you really want to spend it on -or do you save it so you'll be ready when something important comes along? Luck. An opportunity. An idea. A chance at what you really care about. Look around you again. How many in your class have savings accounts? How many know how easy it is to start one? 1You can do it by mail, with as little as S1- CQ dollar- and every dollar you save will be worth more, a lot more, when you need it for something you care aboutj Most young people think that banks are big, rich cold, stone buildings run by big, rich, stone-cold bankers. Wrong. Banks exist to help people-rich people, poor people and people just starting out. We're here to help you -with a savings account, a student loan for college a free checking account, money to buy a house or to improve your home, low cost life insurance, a retirement fund for later on When you're 18 or 20, these things seem a long way oft. But the older you get, the faster they come. And the sooner you start getting ready for them, the luckier you'll be. That's a Q.
