In a sense you rep- resent the end-product of our hopes and plans of one- quarter of a century, of our striving toward important educational goals. It is therefore appropriate that we review these goals at this time. From the very outset we have tried to provide a climate that is favorable to self-propelled student growth and development. We have tried to impress upon our students that we had faith and confidence in them, that we were interested in them as persons and as important members of society, that they mat- ter and count as individuals, and that they have a con- tribution to make to our nation and to the world. You must bear in mind that humanity recognizes your sig- nificance and depends upon you. It has been our conviction that you were more than minds that might vacuum up facts from books and laboratories. We have held to the view that you had the capacity for emotional as well as intellectual growth. Scholarship has been just one facet of your learning experience. Equally important, if not more so, to you and to society has been the kind of feeling person you have become. We have therefore placed great emphasis, by precept and practice, on the ideal of brotherhood of man, on your attitude toward other human beings, and upon the concept of human rights and dignity regardless of differences of race and re- ligion. It was John Donne who, way back in the 17th century, expressed this thought in the inspiring words, uNo man is an island, entire of itself; every man is part of the main . . Intellect and feeling or attitude have always been closely associated with our ideal of development of character or morality. One might ask, What does it mean to be moral? Morality means simply right con- duct e not right conduct in reference to the stars or to a stone, but right conduct in reference to other liv- ing creatures. You and you alone will have to decide what is moral on the basis of whether or not your act will truly hurt yourself and others. As invariably as the law of gravity operates on terrestrial bodies, so there operates invariably on human relationships a law which makes the kind, the good, and the loving act a source of personal pleasure and the base upon which a better civilization must be built. Some of you who are in a stage of religious speculation might wish to consider God in connection with the invariability of this law. Moral behavior, that is, right conduct, can thus be the basis for your own personal enjoy- ment as well as for your meaningful participation in the thing called life. Intellect, attitude, service and character-these have been the foundations upon which Midwood has built its more specific goals and its reputation. Is it asking too much of you to live the ideals of your school, developed and applied these past twenty- iive years? In expressing the hope that you will make them part of your life are we expecting too much? I call your attention to the beautiful thought expressed by the poet, Browning: Oh, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for? As you leave us I wish you Godspeed. Holding high c1 shining light To guide us through the paths of poetry, The profundity of passages, The mom-eating, sub-psychie masterpieces. Thou hast raised our sights to literate levels, Stretched forth thy outlines, And saved us from sinking in the quicksctnds of grammar. Through the use of texts, maps, maga- zines, newspapers, debates and reports, facts and dates, people and places come alive in the classroom. History is no longer CI thing of the past but an important part of the present and the future. The overworked, underpaid teachers bravely rcrlly behind their leader, Mr. Illivicky, and move onward undaunted to such services as special tutorial classes set up before the re- gents to make up for time lost in the transit strike. For two hours a day, apart from the regular S.S. class, students reviewed two and CI half years of work. Social Studies encompasses many areas, besides the usual subjects of history and eco- nomics. There is the Social Studies Forum ta group discussion on current topicst and Road Ahead, both supervised by Mr. Leventhal. The world Will little note nor long remember the answers we give, but it can never forget how many flunked . . . It is for us to be dedicated to the great task before us, that from these cubic equations we get three roots, that we here resolve that finally these parabolas will be graphed, that this test under our guidance shall finally have a twenty-point curve and that this math course against the students, by the teachers and disastrous to averages, Will be finally under- stood. Mr. Reich, chairman of the Biological Sciences Depart- ment, and Mr. Weissmom, chairman of the Physical Sciences Department, both in spotless white coats, lead their teachers down the dusky halls to labs and classrooms. There students discuss the nature of the atom, peek into the intestines of CI frog, learn of the world of DNA, and calculate the electronega- tivity differences of the elements. They study the very essence of the world: its nature, its beings, its laws. The science department is a port of not only the Class- room but also extracurricular activities. It is now the home of the Freshmen of Mid- wood: Kensington. ; In this little wonderland, Fresh find themselves in or world sus- pended between that of their grammar school and of the larger, more imposing, main building. Kensington's narrow hcdls and small rooms contain the spirit of C: group of young teenagers em- barking on the second milestone of their educational careers. Here ninth-grcrders getttheir first taste of Midwood life. Through the ef- forts of the Kensington Coordi- nator, a book store and a tutor- ing service have been brought to the annex. The students in Ken- sington also participate in major city elections and in Sing. How- ever, these functions only whet their appetites for more activities and friendships to come. And now the Freshmen of 1962- 53, who created dreams and il- lusions of what Midwood life would be like at Glenwood Road, are Seniors, and they have brought with them the memories of their year at Kensington. It seemed that I would never get this article written in time for this year's Epilog, for my feelings about the yearbook were in continual motion and change. At the beginning of the term I had been in my own valley of despair for it seemed that no force on earth could get this yearbook published. However, gradually all of our hard work assumed sig- nificance, and the possibility of meeting our dead- line only two months late became a reality. This yearbook is the result of disorganized mass- meetings in room 355 every day, and even more disorganized weekend meetings, where, oddly enough, the book started to take form-piece by piece, page by page. Every effort was made to fashion this 25th anniversary issue of Epilog into a truly special issue. The many candids, the written material, and the century-old cuts -all of these are proof of this effort. I would now like to thank Mr. Cohen, our faculty advisor; Amy and Isabel, Business Editors; Barbara and Janice, Appointments Editors; Nora and Jane, Art Editors; and Sue, Jean, and Hinda. I'd also like to thank the following staff members: Iudy, Goldie, Sharon, Sandy, and Susan, of the Senior Section, Barbara of the Art staff, and Michelle and Diane, of the Production staff. The following editors deserve special praise for their share in the major responsi- bility of the yearbook: Cheryl, for a marvelous job with the Senior Section; A1, for the terrific photos; Pat and Nancy, for the layouts; and Amy, for writ- ing and gathering very fine copy, and for taking on the extra responsibility of Captions Editor. To all of these editors and staff members-once again -a sincere thank-you. As for the Editor-in-Chief, well . . . I think I'll get her a tranquilizer! It's on Argus, With Ct capital A that means school newspaper. Argus takes polls of what Midkids want in their Christmas stockings, what they'd do if they were mayor of the City of Midwood, what they'd do to improve the school. The bird prints things about kids who do the butterfly, Win scholarships, and sell Girl Scout cookies. It looks into old customs like trick- or-trecrting and sending Valentine's Day cards. How- ever, it also discusses college opportunities, school activities, and controversial issues such as the war in Viet Nam, the teQCh-ins, and tectcher-pupil relation- ships. New or outstanding teachers and students are introduced to Midwoodites. Argus communicates news of the school to its students and thus instills in them a school spirit, a mutucd feeling. Morybe it isn't such a crazy bird after all. Road Ahead and Patterns First Row Oeit to righm Diane Levine; Ncmcy Gutkin; Susan Schulslaper: Larissa Oryskevich: loan Gold. For every student interested in social studies, Road Ahead offers a means of expressing ideas, revealing truths and ex- posing abuses in society and government. Road Ahead is read by students in every so- cial studies class. The editors and staff choose a different theme for each issue on which every article is based. In keep- ing with the high academic and literary standards char- acteristic of Midwood publica- tions, Road Ahead is published twice a year under the guid- cxnce of Mr. Leventhod, faculty adviser. Patterns. the literary maga- zine, is a mosaic of prose, poe- try and art. Its works represent the best contributions of the writers and artists in Mid- wood. Dr. Bader, faculty ad- viser, works With the editors almost Ct whole school year in Choosing pieces to be printed in the finished magazine. One teacher who will remain in our hearts for many years is Mr. Iules Hirsh. Under a pleasant exterior lies an even warmer soul. When you add to this his professional skill as a musician, success with any orchestra was almost certain. Mr. Hirsh's years of experience as per- sonal manager to Leonard Bernstein proved useful in dealing With the artistic temperaments so abundant in B-15. Our new conductor imparted to the orchestra a freshness and vigor which characterized its performances. This was achieved by both the high standards set for us, and each member's desire to do his best for Mr. Hirsh. The chamber orchestra's per- formance of the Fourth Brandenberg Concerto marked its ascension to a new level of quality. The glimpses of beauty will be remembered as evidences of What effort and goodwill can accomplish. The noble ele- gance of a French horn solo Will linger in our memories. Cer- tainly, at times, the dreary hours of rehearsal seemed fruit- less. But then, When the thought of improvement had been dismissed, the improbable would happen. For a glorious mo- ment there would be a surge of common feeling, a wane of emotion cresting the flow of a phrase. At these moments, it was all worth it. Terence Braverman, First Cellist. Sing Sing is a unique school experience, a spirit more than an occasion. In no other activity is there such a cooperation in pool- ing talents and energies towards a common goal. It is a hectic time, sometimes fun, sometimes torture, but it is also a singularly educational period lat least it was for met, and it remains an experience I treasure. The important work of Sing starts in late October or early Noyember with the first meeting, and ends with a fateful week- end in February. For those persons unfamiliar with Sing, it is a competition between classes, with the Frosh, Sophs, Iuniors and Seniors each writing songs to familiar tunes and a script around a central theme, making costumes and scenery, and finally staging their masterpiece to Vie for points awarded by judges at the three performances during Sing weekend. Assisting and guiding the classes in their attempts are their commissioners and this year's faculty advisors, Mr. Harris Sarney and Mr. Jules Hirsh. The festivities begin officially with the first meeting, to Which all students go to do homework, talk, and, incidentally, to vote for their friends in the election of officers. Traditionally, the next large turnout land the next time many of these kids are seem occurs when Sing pictures are taken. No such problem presents itself at lyric committee meetings, however, because everyone loves a party. Even the officers are, at times, caught up in the carnival atmosphere. However, this spirit lasts only as long as they can avoid Mr. Sarney. At long last, the officers and one or two lyric committee mem- bers have finished writing Sing! Time paSSes quickly, too quickly, and then it's Sing night. liOh, we're not ready! HIust one more week, it we had only one more week. But your commissioner has introduced you, and you're on, ready or not. Wonder of wonders! It was an almost perfect performance! Amid chaos backstage, Mr. Sarney strides through the teeming sea of students, which, of course, parts for him, to the happy chairman, to whom he says, in a touching scene, HCut out 20 minutes before tomorrow night! The only statement about it that is universally true is that our student government means individuals working for others and striving for their own fulfillment. Those Who participated in the City of Midwood will never forget it. As for those Who did noteevery member of the student body has benefited by student government, Whether or not he realizes it. To get down to more everyday matters, the City of Midwood's common name is 'lB-71. There, the Board of Estimate, the executive- legislative body, holds its meetings; it is composed of the elected officers of our school, some twenty each term. The councilseAM, PM, and Kensington, are made up of all the homeroom presidents. All the officers in these groups are the representatives of Midwood's students trying to solve the school's problems, and helping to better Midwood. But this is not all. There are over twenty-five commissions which add many new dimensions to our student government. They are as far afield from each other as working in the hospitals as volun- teer nurses' aides to keeping a record of all the laws passed in our legislative bodies. These commissions, and those Who lead them, comprise one of the largest, most enthusiastic, and really worth- while activities in Midwood. Many of you reading this article will remember fragments of student government-an officer giving a speech at the assembly, a Carnival, a cake sale, the Senior Prom, or the bustle of B-7l with some forty students crammed into a small room. Others will re- member a rich, rewarding experience as an active participant. Whatever you remember will be important to you, for this memory of your years at Midwood High School is something to be cherished. These activities have played an important role in the growth of Midwood GS c1 school and in the individual development of the participants in a wide range of areas from tennis to track, golf to gymnastics, bowling to basketball. Cindermen, Aquamen, Wallmen and others have trained and worked after school, in addition to their studies to help build up teams Midwood can be proud of. Midwoodites managed to overcome such difficulties as lack of equipment, playing fields, and a swimming pool. Sometimes they have been suc- cessful in winning District and City championships in basketball, baseball and football, and in break- ing new records in swimming and track. Other times their losses and failures served to spur them on, to try harder to Win back the school's honors. For, With these losses, the boys still showed good sportsmanship and an unequalled spirit and fervor. In this, the twenty-fifth anniversary issue of Epilog, we would like to congratulate the teams on their fine performances for Midwood and Wish them future success. Gill: Robin Saget. Third Row Uevlt to righti: Stephen Weingroff: Jay Schierman; Fred Muttingly: Stanley Broder. I had a problem. My assignment was to do an article on Midwood's football team, the Blue Hornets. I wanted to tell everyone how sensational and adept our team was. Of course, I reasoned, I could tell them about our first game against Brooklyn Tech which we won 8 to 7, or the last game against Erasmus which we won 26 to 24. If they weren't over- Whelming victories, at least they were exciting; the boys shoWed spunk, led by Myron Brown and Dennis Beckman, our only returning lettermen. I wanted my fellow Seniors to feel proud of the Hornets and to remember their final football season as ending in a blaze of glory. My recourse seemed evident. I went to Coach Eisenberg for help. Me: Mr. Eisenberg, how do you feel about the 1965 sea- son, as far as the players and the game is concerned? Mr. Eisenberg: We had some fine players: Myron Brown, Dennis Beckman, Fred Mattingly, Steve Weingroff, Rod Gill, Fred Urich, Armando Williamson, Jay Schierman, Neil Ortner, Robin Saget, Steve Wolfe, Stanley Broder and lack Schneider. This year the boys were lacking in experience, but football is a tough game. Me: This year the team seemed prone to injuries. How did it affect our game? Mr. Eisenberg: Fred Urich, lack Schneider and Dennis Beckman were injured, as was Rod Gill, Who's a solid block of granite, and one of our best players. Because the team lacked depth and experience, we couldn't afford these losses and it prevented us from doing better than we did. Me: This year we used the Wing T formation. Do you consider it successful? Mr. Eisenberg: Yes, I do, but next year we're going to use something else. Me: Did you say anything to the boys to prepare them before each game? Mr. Eisenberg: Because football is really a game of men- tal gymnastics, I used the psychological approach to bring out the best in the hearts of the boys. Me: Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to speak with you. Since this is your last year as coach at Midwood, I would like to wish you the best of luck. On behalf of Epilog, I would like to bid you and the Midwood Blue Hornets of 1965-66 a fond farewell and congratulations for a fine season. 5l 52 boosters Hey, are you trying out for Boosters tomorrow? However, the inexperienced players were no match for the other schools in Division I. For the second year in a row, the Basketball Team was out of the playoff race but it played a major role in deciding the divisional and city championships. A time to reflect about the many good things that have happened in the last four years ... and a time to think about the years ahead. I am certain that you have considered furthering your education, either in college or in the many fine trade or nursing schools which are available.
