Dear Seniors: This book is very appropriately dedicated to our late President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and to his dream and struggle for a better America. But the best memorial must really be one which you Will build into your hearts and minds. Our young President told us repeatedly that this is a time to move forwardeto eliminate the hate, the discrimination, the lack of under- standing and appreciation for the democratic ideal and process, Which in effect caused an assassin to inflict a cruel blow upon our nation and upon the world. With great vision he started to lead us toward new frontiers in civil rights, in economic progress and opportunity, and in world peace. You who are about to leave us might well keep in mind his conception of the educational frontier as expressed in a recent message to Congress: nNo task before our nation is more im- portant than expanding and improving the educational opportunities of all our people. The concept that every American deserves the opportunity to attain the highest level of education of which he is capable is . . . a traditional ideal of democracy. But it is time that we moved toward the fulfillment of this ideal With more vigor and less delay. For education is both the foundation and the unifying force of our democratic way of life. It is the mainspring of our economic and social progress. It is the highest expression of achievement in our society ennobling and enriching human life. In short, it is at the same time the most profitable investment society can make and the richest reward it can confer. I trust that you will all enlist your best ef- forts in the realization of the goals for which he lived and died. Godspeed! DR. I. L. BERNSTEIN Principal

We'd Like to Thank Our College Office and Grade Advisors . . . MIDWOOD AND THE DUTCH The lot on which Midwood now stands was an unmet! part 0! a graveyard. The Dutch uttleu e! Midwout called this part at their village stony and uncomfortable and nothing more than an Indian path. MIDWOOD A CIRCUS Midwood'e cultural background was estab- lished in 1928 when the Ringling Brothers rented the lot and constructed their circus on it. SEXANDTHECAFETERIA Have you ever wondered why there are two lunch counters in the cafeteria? In 1941, when the school had just been built, associating with the opposite sex in the cafeteria was punish- able by detention. The boys and girls had to sit in opposite ends of the cafeteria. Later. as Midwood's democratic tradition grew, special dispensation was given to stu- dents with higher grades. They were allowed to share intellectual conversations coeduca- tionally during lunch. On November 7, 1945, a proclamation offering co-ed tables to the masses was passed. HUMOR IN MIDWOOD The prevalent joke at that time was, We could make beautiful music together. crunch crunch. Midwood's sense of humor has not progressed noticeably since then. WHY THEY SEALED OUR DOME - OR MIDWOOD AND THE PIGEONS In 1941. we were given a choice between having a swimming pool or a dome. Midwood. of course. chose the latter. The dome is sealed now, but the janitor recalls that years ago he would climb up regularly to release the pigeons trapped in the narrow structure. THE ATTIC There was an attempt to convert the attic to classrooms, but it was discontinued because of lack of funds. However. the attic has not been completely useless. In 1943, the Art Squad directed twelve treshman art students to our painting studios on the fifth floor. The gates were locked, and the freshmen spent an hour of artistic contemplation there. THE BATTLE OF THE SLACKS. In 1942, for the first time in Midwood's his- tory. girls were permitted to wear slacks to school during the winter because of the lack of stockings and of the transportation problem tbecause of which students were urged to roller-skate to schoolJ One boy protested by wearing a skirt over his pants. SAFETY IN MIDWOOD We don't have a boiler. We do. however. have our own fireman. whose job is to call Brooklyn College's heating plant twice a day to ask that the heat be turned on and off for our building. Thus, Midwood is virtually fire- proof, except for the occasional hazard of over-enthusistic chemistry teachers.
