28 Midwood Fables THE BUSY BODY BEAVER AND THE MOLE On a fine day, in one of the many corners of Midwood, Miss Busy-Body Beaver (who was a bit of an organization woman) encoun- tered a small brown mole. Foremost in Miss Beaver's mind was the goal of changing this unofficious, unambitious animal into a buxom, bustling creature like herself. For Miss Beaver's motto had always been: Why Let Them Run Their Own Lives When You Can Do It So Much Better? You're a 'bragdowdy'! snorted Miss Beaver. You're not ‘in the know’. Get organized! Join some organizations! You're leading a narrow and fruitless life! For me, my life is not fruitless,’ retorted Miss Mole. By con- centrating on that which | enjoy most, | gain much knowledge in a few chosen fields. You spread yourself so thin that you gain nothing. If you follow that principle, you will certainly never be a well- rounded individual, sneered Miss Beaver, displaying her well- rounded shape. And think of the contacts you gain from clubs and such! Why I know every animal worth knowing in Midwood. | have a few real friends. They share my interests and truly care about me. Are your friends like that? That's of no consequence, bristled Busy-Body, look how important I've become because of my activities. I've recently been appointed chairman of the IBM (Institution for Bustling Mammals) and treasurer of the AEC (Animal Eavesdropping Committee). That's all very well for you,'' responded Miss Mole politely, but | am content in my small world with my small group of friends. | do not envy your life full of bustling and hurrying so fast that you never really see anything, and she walked away. The time finally came for the animals of the City of Midwood to leave and seek their fortune in the outside world. All of the animals elected Miss Beaver Mammal Most Likely To Get Wherever It Is That She Is Going. And the mole... ? Well, she left Midwood too — not as grandly as Miss Beaver, perhaps — but with a curious smile of contentment on her unambi- tious face. MORAL: 'Tis better to savour one crumb slowly than to cram down the whole pie without tasting it.
