The anger of the gods was aroused for they doubted that man could cope with this force, a force which really belonged only to celestial beings. Perhaps the gods were right. For the children of fire are the steel blade of a sword, the oily shine of a gun barrel, and the tearing, crashing, violent impact of a bullet destroy- ing everything in its path. But—we must also remember that the driving force of a turbine, the precision of a sur- geon's scalpel, the symmetry of a Greek vase, and the warmth of an incubator are also children of fire. Thus, fire can be used for good as well as evil purposes. Today man- kind surpasses Promethus in his ability to produce dynamic and more powerful forces. He is stepping into a new dimen- sion of power in which he again takes life and death into his hands. The speed of a jet plane, the detection and cure of disease, are projections of this new force. From the unprecedented moment at Hiroshima, through the voyage of the Nautilus, to the launching of Russia's earth satellite, has come an era in which man is confronted by a new, dynamic force of the gods. Today mankind has profound knowledge of these forces. But — this new fire can be bent to his will. He can open the door to an era of new dimensions in prosperous living. No longer must man be content with merely holding his own against the ravages of nature. He can bend this new force to his will. Now, the trackless desert will no longer be a useless waste, but instead will become a source of abun- dance in food. Now —the possibility of escape from the age old-problems of illness and poverty. Now — the elimina- tion of jungle competition for existence, the real cause of war. Now — the prospect of fulfillment, growth, cooperation, peace. Or—he can continue to bring forth new dimensions in destructiveness — the complete annihilation of all mankind. Man must learn to handle hostility and destructiveness within himself. Though man is the master of celestial forces, who, in turn, is the master of man? And man the stumbler and finder, goes on, man the dreamer of deep dreams, man the shaper and maker, man the answerer. Audrey Eisenberg A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL LAYOUT: JUDY MILLER Dear Seniors: Historians have pointed up the influence of the old frontier of the West, and have emphasized the resulting opportunities for indi- vidual growth and development throughout our past. Horace Gree- ley epitomized this thought with the injunction, ''Go west, young man, go west!'' But now, we find people who feel that, with the pass- ing of the frontier, there has disappeared from the American scene the challenge and opportunity of bygone days. This attitude is in grievous error, for today, more than ever, we are challenged by frontiers that are more exciting and critical than those of the past. The theme of this book — New Dimensions — is based on this concept. There are physical frontiers of science — in electronics, sources of power, and exploration of space — which fairly stagger the imag- ination. The possibility of travel in outer space is now more than a wild dream or a bizarre plot in science fiction. The development of automatic memory systems, which can store up in coded form thousands of items of information, providing them on demand as needed, has led engineers to the prediction that some day there will be more channels of communication between machines than between people. And the exploitation of the atom has posed for humanity the anachronistic or contradictory possibilities of future standards of liv- ing beyond our wildest dreams on the one hand and utter annihilation on the other. But the new frontiers are not merely scientific, physical, or mate- rial. There are frontiers of human relationships, of governmental organization, of the very spirit and soul of humanity, which offer just as exciting and important a challenge. Man's conquest of nature has been astonishing. His failure to conquer human nature has been tragic. But the time has come when this problem must be resolved. Unless we meet this challenge, the progress we may make in the more material and tangible areas can only serve to destroy, not create or construct the better life for which we hope. | offer these thoughts to you because you are part of the younger generation which will have to meet the problems and chal- lenges of the new frontier. This will require every bit of intelli- gence, every sense of values, and every ounce of courage which you have or which you will develop in the future. But the 'new'' frontier also holds a promise of the possibility of a life more interesting and rewarding than any you could have found on the ''old'’ American frontier. You leave us, therefore, to face a world where the opportunities are greater than ever before in man's history — where the nature and very existence of Civilization are in the balance. We hope that we have given you the initial ingredients of proper preparation for this challenge. We now add our best wishes and prayers. Godspeed! Sincerely yours, J. L. Ginsberg To Mrs. Cohn and Mr. Ginsberg: We of the Senior Class should like to take this opportunity to tell you how much your guidance, understanding and patience have meant to us. Unfortunately, most of the time we were either too rushed, too excited or too forgetful to thank you properly. When we were Freshmen and Sopho- mores, you helped us in problems large and small—from choosing the right c ourses, to ‘'getting rid of that study period.'' As Juniors and Seniors we began to think in terms of the future—college, a job, avoca- tion—and our questions pertaining to the mystery of college entrance or impressing the 'boss'' were answered patiently ‘and competently. Thank you for helping us over the high school hurdles and for preparing us to leave Midwood as happier, wiser and more useful citizens. Foremost in Miss Beaver's mind was the goal of changing this unofficious, unambitious animal into a buxom, bustling creature like herself. For Miss Beaver's motto had always been: Why Let Them Run Their Own Lives When You Can Do It So Much Better? You're a 'bragdowdy'! snorted Miss Beaver. You're not ‘in the know’. Get organized! Join some organizations! You're leading a narrow and fruitless life! For me, my life is not fruitless,’ retorted Miss Mole. By con- centrating on that which | enjoy most, | gain much knowledge in a few chosen fields. You spread yourself so thin that you gain nothing. If you follow that principle, you will certainly never be a well- rounded individual, sneered Miss Beaver, displaying her well- rounded shape. And think of the contacts you gain from clubs and such! Why I know every animal worth knowing in Midwood. | have a few real friends. They share my interests and truly care about me. Are your friends like that? That's of no consequence, bristled Busy-Body, look how important I've become because of my activities. I've recently been appointed chairman of the IBM (Institution for Bustling Mammals) and treasurer of the AEC (Animal Eavesdropping Committee). That's all very well for you,'' responded Miss Mole politely, but | am content in my small world with my small group of friends. | do not envy your life full of bustling and hurrying so fast that you never really see anything, and she walked away. The time finally came for the animals of the City of Midwood to leave and seek their fortune in the outside world. All of the animals elected Miss Beaver Mammal Most Likely To Get Wherever It Is That She Is Going. And the mole... ? Well, she left Midwood too — not as grandly as Miss Beaver, perhaps — but with a curious smile of contentment on her unambi- tious face. MORAL: 'Tis better to savour one crumb slowly than to cram down the whole pie without tasting it. PAWS, PROMISES AND POLITICS , .. And I promise, intoned Finnius T. Fox silkily, that if | am elected mayor, every animal in the fair city of Midwood will be given what I call a ‘Square Deal’. Now, besides being weak in Ethics, Finnius was poor in Plane Geometry. Therefore, what he called a ‘Square Deal’ was a rather distorted program. The basic principle that guided Mr. Fox was, Promise ‘em Anything but Give ‘em Hell. His campaign was arranged accordingly. Among the happy, freedom-loving animals were circulated some ‘of Finnius' wiliest supporters. So wily were they that they were esteemed members of the SPCA (Slippery Political Comers Associa- tion). These glibbest-of-all-glib foxes extolled in glowing words their candidate's newer, freer brand of freedom. Promises were flag- rantly made, punctuat ed by the swish of a bushy tail or the raise of a foxy eyebrow. Yes, the good citizens were completely captured by Finnius' charming, if a bit unscrupulous, henchmen. They listened raptly to Mr. Fox's campaign speeches. His words are so big, | can't understand a thing he's saying, whispered Miss Anteater to her neighbor. He must be very intelli- gent. | intend to vote for him. He promised me that if he were elected he'd make the sun disappear so that it would always be night, confided Mr. Owl. I shall certainly use all of my influence to put him in office.” Of course, Finnius T. Fox was elected by a landslide. All of the animals were happy and rejoiced throughout the city. In their exulta- tion at having their candidate elected, they forgot their reasons for electing him. The unkept promises were never noticed. The citizens never realized that they had been taken in.’ And Finnius .. . Well, somehow, that political plotter had mysteriously van- ished. But the Mayor's Office in Midwood City was not empty. It was now full of the missing Mr. Fox's devoted, bushy-tailed, and extremely glib supporters. MORAL: In the excitement of the hunt, the fox is often lost. 30 More Midwood Fables THE LAMB WHO LEAPED At one time, in Midwood City, dwelt a lamb who didn't like to hang around with the flock. He enjoyed going off on his own and thinking (something the other lambs rarely did). One day, however, while roaming around alone, he was almost captured by a wolf. This narrow escape changed his whole way of living. The lamb decided it was much safer to stick with the crowd. He hastily joined the Follow-the-Leader Club and adopted the philos- ophy: If everyone else does it, it must be right.'' He wore his wool in the same style that all the other lambs wore it and gave up the dangerous habit of thinking. Everything ran along smoothly until one sunny day, the leader of the flock decided to see if he could fly. He leaped out of one of the highest windows in Midwood City and before he had hit bot- tom, our friend and all the others quickly followed. Unfortunately, none of the lambs could fly and all were killed. MORAL: There is no safety in numbers, or in anything else. Better to live dangerously, than to die safely. THE INSUFFERABLE OSTRICH Not very long ago, in a city called Midwood, lived an ostrich who thought he was extremely intellectual. His plumes waved proudly as he strutted through the city carrying one book on Calculus and one on Existentialism. He looked down his beak at the other ani- mals and often treated them as if he were Cock-of-the-Walk. This ostrich told the old animals that their ideas were antiquated and obsolete. The young ones he sneered at, as naive. There came a time when everyone avoided this unpleasant character, except a kind- hearted old owl. My boy, said the owl, you must mend your ways. You are behaving insufferably. Unless you take your beak out of the air no one will give a hoot what becomes of you. | need no one, sneered the ostrich, ruffling his feathers. What do | need others for? They are all a dull-witted bunch, any- how. All they see are the things that are right in front of their snouts.’ And he stalked away with his beak in the air. One day, not too long after this incident, there was a great fire in the city. Alarms flashed and fire engines clanged. All of the animals escaped — all but one, that is. The ostrich was too absorbed in a book on Analytic Geometry to sense the fire and, somehow, no one bothered to warn him. MORAL: He who keeps his nose in the air often ends up seeing stars. THE LEOPARDS WHO CHANGED THEIR SPOTS One dismal day, a select group of leopards met in a hidden corner of Midwood City. The subject of this clandestine meeting was CONFORMITY. The instigator of the bunch looked around furtively, twitched his'whiskers, and began to speak: Look at yourselves, he hissed accusingly. No originality! You're all conforming to the masses! A very excitable member leaped up on his hind legs and shouted: He's right! We're sacrificing our INDIVIDUALITY to the group. Why must we all look alike? Why must every leopard have spots? Let's be different! Let's be original! We'll remove our spots! Excellent idea, ’ grinned the leader (who didn't have very attractive spots anyway). We will purchase some peroxide and bleach all our spots! No longer will we conform! The frenzy was contagious and all of the leopards at the meet- ing gleefully agreed to remove their spots. The next day, the smug, unspotted leopards strutted through Midwood City feeling very superior—and very individualistic. As time wore on, however, more and more leopards joined the N.C.N.S. (non-conforming no-spotters). In fact, it was not very long before there were more non-conformists than there were conformists. Yes, hundreds of unspotted leopards now swaggered through the city, each feeling very original — but looking very much alike. MORAL: It takes more than peroxide to attain individuality. Our Class of '58 was graduating. Why then did we not have the triumphant air expected of proud graduates? Why did our legs wobble while mounting the stage and our hands tremble when reaching for the coveted diploma? We'll tell you why— We, in the past year, were subjected to subtly arranged tortures that could not fail to leave their scars on any bold-hearted eighth-termer. We were engaged in the frenzied battle for college acceptance. This battle was entered quite innocently on the day that we cheerfully dropped a post card to CEEB. This is the institution in which leering sadists gloat over their newly-devised examinations; examinations destined, eventually, to accomplish their purpose of eliminating the unworthy candidates for higher schools of learning. This is done by reducing the victim to a state of shock so that he is unfit for anything, in the future, but psychiatric care. Yes, little did we naive ones realize that by sending that post card we had put our nerves, self confidence, even our sanity in jeopardy! Who sported a placid countenance on that fateful day of College Boards? Whose blood pressure remained normal while sitting in that mysterious cubicle where the tests were administered? Who was strong enough to remain calm when faced with questions calculated to reduce a rational human being to a quivering heap of self- doubt? — questions like: “In the previous paragraph, the author implied that: a) Bad poetry is a result of bad prose. b) Goed prose is adapted from bad poetry. c) Bad poetry is actually good poetry. d) Poetic prose can be considered prosaic poetry. e) All of the above. After carefully rereading the paragraph and ascertaining that it was about radar and bore little relationship to either poetry or prose, we decided to choose b'' as the answer. It made a nice pattern on the answer sheet. Then we gritted our teeth and turned to analogies. By this time we were a little bit desperate and the tenser ones among us burst into maniacal laughter at the first glimpse of the analogies which read: 'Telephone:tidal wave : : a) dichotomy:diaper b) John:Mary c) apple: cacophony d) house:doorman ' “Oh well, we thought, the math will probably be a 'snap'. And it was — for the math genius. We took one look at the first problem and gave up. It said: “If car A travels 3 and 17 18 times the speed that car B would go if it went 23% faster than it is going; and car B can go from New York to Trenton in 4 hours on Tuesdays, what is the ratio of the age of the driver of car A to the age of car B's driver? Given: car B is Edsel. ' After a weekend of recuperation, our benumbed brains began to function again. But what faced us now? an interminable wait was ahead before we discovered what colleges would accept us. Yes, during that horrible interval, a bewildering change came over the Class of '58! AND MEASUREMENTS A hush descended upon Midwood. The inherently nervous slithered through the halls, leaving trails of chewed fingernails behind. The desperate haunted Wolfie's, drowning their worries in ice cream sodas and pickles (if the waiter could be bribed). The sly strategists of B-71 incessantly plotted the theft of Miss Bradshaw's crystal ball (through which she consults the powers-that-be as to our futures). At that time, we thought the torture would never end. But, like all things, it finally ceased. We received our little messages, rejections — acceptances. Some of us gaily got ready to go to that upstate school with the buckle in the back. Others prepared to enter the ivy-covored Midwood Annex, across the street. At last, that hectic year was over. But it had taken its toll. No longer were we Seniors of '58 the lively radiant throng we had been in September. No longer were our backs straight and our legs sturdy. Yet, on our quivering lips was a smile; in our glazed eyes, a ray of hope. Summer lay ahead — two whole months of balmy weather. And what were we planning to do? Why, study for the college placement tests, of course! Linda Friedland 35 36 Bobbi NEW DIMENSIONS Part Two During the past year, we Seniors were subjected to tests; tests that measured our verbal ahd mathematical aptitude, tests that computed our achievements, tests that measured our ability as housekeepers, tests that told us how scientific we were, tests that tested our ability to take tests, and just plain tests. There is only one type of examination to which we sudents have not been sub- jected; and this, we are afraid, is one that is inevitable. It is the psychological personality test which is now being used by business organizations. However, we are prepared! Consistent with this trend, we have devised a personality test that might be suitable for students. Below is a sample test with guide answers. Study them carefully and you, too, can appear normal. 1) Do you often ascend staircases two or three steps at a time? Your answer should be no. This tendency may indicate that you have a desire to skip necessary things or that you are always terribly afraid of being late and are constantly in a hurry. However, it may simply mean that you have long legs. 2) Do you prefer yellow apples to red ones? Again, you should answer no. If you prefer yellow apples, you may be identifying yourself with the less healthy looking apple because the bright red apple makes you feel inferior. Although most of us are not jealous of bright red apples, and may prefer the taste of yellow ones, it is still safer to answer this question negatively. 3) Do you prefer detective stories to poetry? In this case you should answer yes. You want to give the impression that you are an outgoing person. 4) Do you often wear your belts and shoelaces tight? You should answer no. This may indicate, if you answer affirmatively, that you either feel intensely insecure and must be tightly strapped into your clothes for fear that they might fall off, or that you have suicidal tendencies and are trying to suffo- cate yourself slowly. | 5) Do you prefer to ride in a subway or in a trolley? Do not answer that you would prefer to ride in a trolley, for the fact that they are now non-existent will indicate that you are living in the past and refuse to face the present. 6) Do you stir coffee with your right hand or your left hand? Your answer should be neither. Stirring coffee with your hand, when there are spoons handy, shows a terrible lack of manners. Part Il: Definition of Terms 7) Togetherness: two students cooperating on a test. 8) Outgoing: Someone who has a lot of dates. 9) Well-balanced: Someone who walks easily in four-inch heels. 10) Maturity: Achieved when your parents permit you to stay in the room when they start telling jokes. 11) Well-adjusted: A student who can face a weekend in which he has to acomplish: preparation for three regents, a college interview, two term papers, a scholarship exam; and then decides to go to the movies. 12) Normal: What you are. 13) Neurotic: What someone else is. Part Ill: Multiple Choice 14) If you were waiting on line in the cafeteria and you were extremely hungry, what would you do if someone jabbed you in the ribs with his tray and got ahead? a) | would eat him. b) | would do nothing. c) | would throw some food at him. d) It depends on how big he is. e) | would say, Excuse me, sir, but | believe you have made the error of taking my place in line. 15) What would yo do if you were eating an apple and you found a worm in it? a) | would eat him. b) | would do nothing. c) | would throw some food at him. d) It depends on how big he is. e) | would say, Excuse me, sir, but | believe you have made the error of entering my apple. As you can see, the questions become more and more confusing. In fact, in extreme cases, the individual taking the examination may develop the delusion that the answers to 14 and 15 are identical. (This is merely a manifestation of extreme exhaustion and should not be mentioned, for it may show that you cannot stand up under strain.) When the examinee reaches this point, he is usually near the end of the test (which is fortunate, for he is no longer in the condition to assume the guise of well-adjustedness). The end of the test will be reached with relief. But remember, if your answers are to indicate that you are normal, you must be cheerful, be outgoing, be resource- ful, be adaptable, be optimistic, be bubbly, be practical, be charming, and, above all, be well-balanced. Remember to keep this psychological ego ideal in mind. This will make you seem like a normal, human being. Now you must excuse me. | must go. | have a three o'clock appointment with my analyst. ' The social scientist asks, What is the good so- ciety? ' These questions are interrelated. The psychologist tells us that one primary goal in our lives should be the de- velopment of our potential to its fullest extent. The social scientist, then, is justified in his conclusion that the good society should be organized so that each person has the op- portunity to develop his talents and capabilities regardless of the circumstances into which he was born—regardless of his ability to pay for an education. To achieve this type of society, we must plan boldly to create new dimensions in education—education on all levels for all people capable of profiting. It is significant that by providing this type of educa- tion, society as a whole, as well as the individual, will bene- fit. Our country must understand that its prosperity and well-being depend not merely upon its natural resources, but more so upon its intellectual resources. The contribu- tions that are made by great men in the arts and sciences enhance and improve the lives of all. When we consider Jonas Salk's education at a free city college, in the light of his great contribution to mankind, we begin to understand the soundness of investing in free public education on the higher level. But not only do we want new dimensions in quantity and quality, we must also aspire to new dimensions in direc- tion and purpose. Russia's launching of the Sputnik has cre- ated new interest in science. Many feel that it is only through emphasis on science that we can hope fo compete, and thus survive. But let us examine. the present stress on science, as compared with that on the social sciences—an area which is currently receiving secondary consideration in our educa- tional scheme. In the words of Raymond Fosdick, We are discovering the right things in the wrong order, which is another way of saying that we are learning how to control nature before we have learned to control ourselves.’ Today, man has a wide and varied understanding of the nature of things. He has controlled disease, split the atom and con- quered space. But does modern society understand the nature of ''man''? Here lies the greatest challenge in our hope for sur- vival. For if we are to use atomic science constructively, we must place more emphasis on the science of human relations. As Bertrand Russell has said, ''We need a science to save us from science. We need further research in the science of human relations, including as it does psychology and social science. We can then teach man to get along with himself, in order to lead a fulfilled life; to get along with others, in order to lead a peaceful life. Let us stress new dimensions in education so that our people may secure a meaningful existence through the max- imum expression of their abilities—so that they may achieve brotherhood and survival through tolerance and under- standing.
