X. I 99.1 we began. Equipped wifh one 6-inch ruler and fwo 3B pencils lwifh no erasersl, we sfarfed ruling in our margins. As Renee blocked off an area of I5'x6', Anifa began skefching in fhe design. The dinner hour was approaching when we finally decided fo pack up for fhe day. On our way ouf of fhe room, fwo of Midwood's mafrons happened fo pass fhe open door. Horrors! one cried. An oufbreak of vandalism! As fhe hurf wore off, we had a small suspicion fhaf fhis liffle remark was iusf fhe beginning of a long line of such complimenfs. ln fhe weeks fhaf followed we worked af a feverish pace. Despife fhe difficulfies we had in scaling fhe walls in order fo painf fhe upper areas of fhe mural, we loved every momenf of if. Soon fhe news spread like wildfire fhroughouf fhe arf squad. Some of our senior members came down fo fhe greaf masferpiece lwhich is second only fo Michelangelo's Sisfine Chapell. Gloria Ragovin donafed a figure and a half, Abboff Meader supplied his usual Meader fouch fo a few of fhe figures, Nafalie Waldman supplied half a shirf wifh cuff-links +o mafch lfhe laffer being silenfly dis- posed of lafer onl, and Helen Goldberg invaded fhe domain by Saure+-ing a male figure. Even our faculfy had some fun on if. Miss Freincle and Miss Reiser, a deserfer from fhe Gym Depf., added fheir liffle somefhings, such as a door, a pile of news- papers and a fypisf. However, we offen found if necessary fo go over fheir work. Soon we accumulafed several fhick layers of painf which, much fo our horror, prompfly began fo crack and peel. lf was in fhis sfage of near-complefion fhaf we showed an abilify fo give a good reparfee fo fhe self-appoinfed arf crifics who surrounded us. Affer fwo weeks of labor, fhe acfual mural painfing was complefed. Now if was fime fo varnish if. Wifh flif gun in hand, and a good supply of lacquer, we proceeded fo puf fhe final fouches on if. The room and surrounding buildings were soon filled wifh fhe fumes of our endeavor. Our mayor, Jay Arbeifer, and mayor-elecf Paul Schwaber soon found if necessary fo deparf along wifh Mr. Dobren, Mr. Grebanier, Commissioners, efc. Affer a few days fhe air was sufficienfly cleared so fhaf acfiv- ifies were able fo refurn fo normal. Our work is done, and now as we refreaf alone fo our fourfh floor den we are faken by a warm feeling of safisfacfion. Taking one lasf look af fhe wall we close fhe door behind us. Midwood has no choice-if cannof forgef us. Anifa Vaccaro Renee Weiner III llllllllllllllllllIlllllll , ,,.,,.M -az-3.1.-L
