I didn'f mean fo appear pusiIIanimous Isee foofnofel. I iusf didn'f fhink fhere was a fiffh floor. Thus spoke fhe Freshman, looking squarely info fhe eyes of fhe face under -fhe blue haf. For Freshmen are brave creafures who foil onward despife all sorfs of fhings: Their program card some- fimes gefs Iosf in fheir Ibaby sisfer'sl doll carriage, fhey learn in Lafin fhaf P.M. sfands for Posf Morfem, and-worsf of all-fhey musf face fhaf silly legend abouf Freshmen being bewildered. Of all fhe myfhs, ancienf Greece fo modern Midwood, fhaf's fhe mosf fanfasfic. Firsf-fermers are really a courageous bafch. . . . Buf waif, perhaps you're curious abouf fhe afore- menfioned bold one Ifhe one wifh fhe vocabularyl. Affer a Iengfhy falk wifh Mr. O'Brien on fhe fopic of should-elevafors-of-four-sfory-buildings-go-up-fo-fhe- fiffh-floor, she was seen frying fo fhrow herself bodily fhrough fhe unyielding wire door af fhe fop of fhe sfairway. How do I know? Gad, how do I know?7 Why, I sfill have a waffle-like scar af fhe fop of my Ieff shoulder. Neverfheless, don'f believe fhem when fhey say, A Freshman is a Thing Thai sfarfs and squirms Eighf ferms! When we were Frosh, if was more like fhis, A Freshman is fhe one Who knows all I1e's gof fo- Prefends nof fo! Like fhe fime a mob from Madison came framp- ing down Bedford Avenue fo fhe chorus of No Sporfs -No SchooI! A few of us Freshies were caughf up in fhe currenf of fheir fervor, and when fhey began fo yell, ','Midwood is a sissyI we joined in. Dr. Gramei' didn'f fhink fhaf was quife nice of us, being Midwood sfudenfs. I guess fhaf's why he dashed down fhe fronf

. I sfeps, grabbed my Civics nofebook, and bellowed. Were you saying Midwood is a sissy? lf he had looked a liffle less angry, l mighf have fold fhe frufh: buf as if was lin self profecfion, mind youl I lied, No. From fhaf fime on, whenever I lie, No, I fhink of Dr. Gramef. The incidenf has no moral, unless if's nof fo carry a Civics nofebook. When we were Freshmen, many imporfanf fhings happened besides our being Freshmen. Radar reached fhe moon, ief planes made fhe Aflanfic fo Pacific flighf in 4V2 hours, fhe U.N. ifhen called fhe UNOl came fo New York, and in general fhe SS curriculum was becoming very complicafed. On Safurday affer- noons and befween classes, we read Forever Amber. On Safurday nighf, we saw The Losf Weekend and discussed if befween classes. We swooned over Van Johnson and gave Frank Sinafra our FDR memorial award. Sixfh Avenue was dubbed Avenue of fha Americas: even oufside of Midwood, fhey were frying fo confuse us innocenfs-buf wifh our Baedekers under our arms, we plodded on. We liked fhe enferfainmenf in Midwood. They may nof have noficed if, fhose upper fermers laf fhe fime we hoped fhey didn'fl, buf fhere were lofs of Freshmen who fook Freshwomen fo fhe Harvesf Moon Dance in Ocfober. When we wenf fo see Wha'I' a Life, if was because fhaf fifle seemed fo fif our Freshman year so apfly. Af fhe Spring Concerf, fhe girl behind me, a ferm-mafe of fhe obvious Freshman fype, whispered, Gosh, fhey look funny, fickling fheir violins like fhaf, buf fhe music is preH'y. Where's if coming from? Lef's be serious for iusf a momenf abouf fha? Freshman we used fo be. There was somefhing won- derful abouf him, abouf fhaf breafhless delighf he fook in everyfhing, abouf his friendliness and his innocenf affifude foward fhe world in general. l somefimes fhink we oughf fo hunf up fhaf rusfy ring we have lying around somewhere and polish if up, and fhen puf on our old Freshman halo again . . . if we can.
