Midwood s'I'ays fhe same, and bidding H' Adieu is nof as easy or pleasanf as we fhoughl' if mighl' be. The road before us is no+ very clear, and all of Midwood, all fhe subfle values we had faken for granled loom in our young eyes . . . 'rhe comforlable rouline we grew impafienf wifh, lfhe infer- esi' of feachers we failed +o appreciale, +he friends and enemies, 'rhe halls, 'rhe rooms, +he desks. The 'rhing 'rha+ brings fears +o even +he mosf sophis'rica+ed and disin+eres+ed of us is +he feeling +ha+ rhe cliques, +he sweef- hearls, 'rhe kids we worked wi'rh are 'ro be scaHered +o +he winds of +he universi+y and business world. Teachers who we had begun +o accepf as friends, are being leff behind. We promised 'ro wri+e each o+her, swore 'ro gef drunk +oge+her nex'r New Year's Eve, buf knew if was goodbye. Some of us will hang on +o Midwood. We will have our box full of souvenirs. We will refurn +o hang around +he Argus oFFice, 'rhe Bio lab, fhe Gym, +alk +o feachers, and a few of us will even +ake posf-graduafe courses. I+ will no+ be ihe same. For mosf of us fhe break will be comple+e. Midwood will +ake i+s place as a rafher solid rock we can resl' our memories on. we zfemem ber This is for lhose of us who save old Arguses, who may have a big box home overflowing wilh guard bullons, a lirsl' piclure al' lhe Copa, Variely Show slubs, one- hundred per cenl lesl papers, and even a Regenls Review book. lvlosl' of us can'l' remember 'rha+ day in Seplember, '44, bul we associale il' wilh many sfock experiences lhal are lradirional in sludenl life. Perhaps we were fooled by 'rhe swimming pool on lhe fif+h floor, by 'rhe gym spols al a dime a lhrow, or by lhe basemenl' billiard parlor and lounge, beer, prelzels, and cigarelles. Perhaps we wanled fo be. Mosr of us 'fried +o look like non-freshies by opening lhe srarched collars Molher senl us OFF in, covering our French One lexls wilh Brooklyn College labels, and never asking direclions of anyone under 'rhirly-five. Girls pul' lipslick on, and began ignoring lheir 8B sweelhearls, sprinkling lheir chaH'er wilh 'rhe menlion of upper l'erm big wheels. We scrambled for guard posls, over-did our homework, and learned how fo smoke. There was a sigh of relief when lhe firsl' day of 'rhe Second Term began, and we had ceased lo be unlouchables and now were in 'roleraled obscurily. We began 'lhe rocky road lo recognilion. Now deep in lhe P.M. session we saw +he cold logic of Darwin's Survival of +he Fillesl lheory in praclice. Palman Qui Meruil Feral, and soon we began +o recognize lhe same faces a+ 'lhe command pos+s of s'l'uden+ aFlairs .... P.M. Coordinalors, Guard lnspecfors, Sludenl Councilmen, Secrelaries, Mayors, elc. We look our places in lhe sung for A.M.'ers al' lasl, we 'rriumphed over ignominy. By now we were in lhe rouline. We ioked aboul culling, said hello 'lo handsome leachers in lhe halls, or lhose we wanled a passing grade from. We gossiped aboul' lalesl' romances, had li++le alrercalions in lhe Dean's office, chose privale corners in 'lhe Cafeleria, go+ 75 on lhe lnfermediale Regenfs, and a minule laler picked up an honor card in Spanish. We knew lhal' lhe redhead in SS lorry-four was going sfeady wi+h a Yale man. We had laken Chem., and lhe horrible odor on +he norfh side of +he building was merely hydrogen sulphide. Forly-nine hundred periods had licked away, and we now pul' a big S afler our Home Room number. Wilhoul realizing any change in our personalilies we found ourselves seHing lhe example for fhe res'r of +he school. We made mad scrambles l'o buy up Senior hals. ll seemed wonderful fo wear hals in school wilh 4M8 in big leflers, bul affer lhree or four days +hey were less in evidence. I+ seemed lhe all- impor+anl' hairdo reigned supreme. The lisl' was made up, and we spoke of our somelhing-poinl-somelhings as if 'rhey were Major League balling averages. The facl +ha'r our high school average and college applicalions were fail accompli somehow furned our lhoughls lo The more iascinaling and immediale queslions of who fhe Prelliesl Girl is . , . whal lhe Senior Show is like . . . where 'rhe Prom would be . . . how we are going lo gel lhe dough and a big, black car, and when we-'re going lo hear from Syracuse Universily. 4
