'4- F- P ITTSPIHS THE 1960 edited by Linda Harris assisted by the Student Staff . . A student is almost certain to become a little more of what he already is. I TRODUCTIO prrng is a lovely time . . . a time to take to the outdoors with our studies, our fun, and our memories. In the balmy, moist, spring afternoons, we let our thoughts drift back over the fall of 1959 and the early part of 1960. It is a brief span of time, compared to a lifetime, but momentous, certainly, in the molding of our lives. It would take a thick tome to do justice to all the events which have made this past year the bittersweet mixture of frustration and satisfaction which is so much a part of becoming an adult. A yearbook has, however, as its chief function the recording and careful guarding of the year's events. This is so that in other springs to come, you may open this memory book and remember . . . remember the classes, the teachers and administration, the sports, activities, and organ- izations. We have created this 1960 BOMBER with en- thusiasm, compiled it with dedication, and presented it with the earnest hope that you will enjoy and treasure it. To many our school is just a symbol of an American ideal . . . the public school. But to us who have grown with it, Midwest City High School is itself the symbol. Here many of our dreams of the future are formulated. It offers us an opportunity to make something of ourselves if we will. THOMPSON Chaplam lclfy Manage, The Student Council is the most out- standing organization at Midwest City High School. lt is the governing part of the Stu- dent Body and its members are elected by the students themselves. The year started back in April of '59 with the election of the officers for the corn- ing year. Members were elected later that month. The newly elected Student Council be- gan its duties the first week of school with Howdy Week, which serves to acquaint the students with their teachers and other stu- dents. Do you remember the Thanksgiving As- sembly when we were fortunate enough to have Rev. Bill Alexander as our speaker? He delivered an inspirational message that no one will forget. That assembly, as well as all other assemblies that are held at the high school, was planned by the Student Council. In the month of December the Student Council makes its drive for the Christmas project. The project was to collect money to be used for Sheridan Bailey's open heart surgery. The council also sponsors Black and Gold Day and the Basketball Coronation each year. The Student Council of 1959-60 had a successful year and saw many worthwhile ideas put into use. Yet the credit for all that was accomplished this year goes to you, the Student Body, for without your help, and sup- port, the Student Council of Midwest City High School wouldn't have been able to leave such a distinguished record. Whether it be football, basketball, or wrestling, each event is backed strongly by the Bomberettes. To become a member of Pep Club, all you need is a good pair of lungs, and a uniform, which consists of a black pleated skirt and a gold sweater. We began our year by having a picnic to arouse the interest of new students and to keep the interest of the members of the previous year. At our football game we took up a collection for the Medical Research Foundation. Our other activities included a dinner and dance which was held during the latter part of the year. The Bomberette Pep Club is as much a part of our high school as any athletic team itself. Fight! I Bombers to another Victory. The Tri-Hi-Y is affiliated with the Y.M.C.A. We undertake all projects with the desire to help those who are less fortunate than we are. During this year we have had speakers that influence us in many different ways, such as improving our actions, thoughts, deeds, etc. A backward dance with a chosen beau and giving food to a needy family were a part of our year. The highlight of the year was Youth in Government when the state Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y clubs ran the state government giving each member a better understanding of our government. Our sponsor, Mrs. Spence, has given much of her time to help our club to become a much better influence on our daily lives. Once more their courage and determination to win showed itself on the scoreboard. Urged on by their student body and Pep Club, they blazed a firey pathway into a new conference. Each game inspired them to march onward in their crusade for victory. As in years past, the students have reason to be proud of their Mighty Bombers. The Bombers finished a great season with a seven to three record, and lost two of those three games by only 5 points. They placed fourth in the Class AA Conference. Midwest City High School's football coaches for the '59-'60 season were: Jim Darnell, Jim Harris, Joe Phillips, Ed Jacobson, Don Harris, Gerald McPhail, and Dick Evans. The night of October 21 saw what was probably the most exciting game and the one that drew the largest crowd for the Bombers. This, of course, was the conference game against Capital Hill. It was the first home game the Bombers lost, by the score of 23-25. COACH JAMES DARNELL Jim Darnell has been Midwest City High School's Head Football Coach for the past five years.
