He has brought with him an atmosphere of friendliness and happiness that has penmeated every room. We, as seniors suddenly realize how much our teachers have influenced our lives. They have led us through difficult problems, instructional and personal. As we continue through life we will find they have molded our characters and ideas far more than we can realize, now. We take this time to express our grati- tude to all of the faculty of our school. 3 HIGH SCHIHH IAEIIHY Mrs. Nell N. EV XE, L Y On one bright September morning in l9h9,twenty-four freshmen entered M.H.S. with one great achievement in mindg graduation day. Under the supervision of Mrs. Marvin Gennings, we elected the following officers: Paul Duffy, President, Paul Corum, Vice- president, Ouida Bush, Secretary, Martha Browning, Treasurer. For our class party we all went to the skating rink in Lexington. When the roll was called at the beginning of our Sophomore year we found that Shirley Means,Martha Browning, Joe Ward, and David Green had dropped out and Mary Lou Shipp and Eugene lathem had been added. Under Miss Betty Compton's guidance we chose Paul Corum, President, Paul Duffy, Vice-president, Mary Lou Shipp, Secretary, Retta Updike,Treasurer,to guide us through the year. we loved parties so much that we spent a weekend in May at Clifton, with Miss Jane Chitwood, Mr. and Mrs. Roe, Mrs. Pearl Summers,Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wash, Mr. A.D. Woodrum, and Miss Betty Compton as our chap- erons. we had our first chance for making money toward our trip to Washington by selling candy at all of the basketball games. we also sponsored a Stunt Night in which the upper seven grades participated. That Christmas we went Christmas caroling and invited the Juniors and Seniors. After caroling we went to the Christian Church and had hot cocoa and sandwiches. In the spring of the year we had two new pupils, Georgetta and Harold McLean, who came to us from Elkhorn. we came back as Juniors, in the fall of 'Sl with Mrs. Donn Ramsdell as our spon- sor. we had a total of 1? pupils. Eugene Latham returned to his home in South Carolina, Mary Lou Shipp entered Sullins in Virginia, Paul Corum went to Darlington, David Havens entered U-High, Peggy Farmer enrolled at K.F.O.S. and Ralph Estes joined the Navy. Alma Rigney was added that year. we chose for our class officers, Presi- dent,Paul Duffyg Vice-president, Ouida Bush, Secretary,Margaret Summers, and Treasurer Alma Rigney. Again that Christmas we went Christmas Caroling. Afterwards we went to our sponsor's home for sandwiches and cocoa and played games. In February, Harold McLean left us to go to the Army and Retta Updike married a former graduate, Charles Richardson. we had a magazine drive in which we competed against the Seniors. we were such poor salesman that the Seniors defeated us. On May 2, we had our first play, WSpooks and Spasmsn with Mrs. Ramsdell as our director and Mrs. Voigt assisting. On May 7,we took the Seniors to the Bluegrass Airport, for our Junior and Senior Banquet. for our class party. That year we went to Mrs. Hicks farm At last we are Seniors. We have had Mrs. Voigt to help us through this last year. Our first party was in honor of our on our campus, in October. Our class high school faculty, a picnic at the Y-teen oven officers are Paul Duffy, President for the third time, Betta Richardson, Vice-president, Ouida Bush, Secretary, and Margaret Summers, treasurer. Our magazine drive did not reach our expectations, for again the other grade came out on top. We sold cokes at the home basketball games to help us build our funds for our trip to Washington D.C. In March we sponsored an Amateur Night, with Arty Kay and Mike Martin helping us entertain. It was very successful, and now we were well on our way to the Nation's Capital. On March 27, we had our senior play, this event, and we Mrs. Voigt and Mr. had dreamed of for places of interest held May 7, in our nIt's A Daten, directed by Mrs. Nell Voigt. We looked forward to worked hard to give a good production. On April 8,the Seniors with A.D. Woodrum boarded the C Q O for Washington. This trip which we several years now unfolded before our eyes. The fun we had and the we saw will never be forgotten. The Junior-Senior VBanquet was gymnasium. The food, favors, and program will be long remembered. And now just two more days remain before we, the Class of 1953, leave the halls of Midway High. We have had four happy years, years full of fun, of work and co-oper- ation to reach our Commencement Night. Many happy memories will rush back to us in the future years, bringing echoes of friends we have made. Before we shut the pages of our history,we wish to express our appreciation to each and all of you who have help- ed us, the class of '53, reach our goal. Compliments of YOUNGER OPTICAL,Lexington,Kentucky ' ze A rap ec? As we gaze into our crystal ball we see Father Time slowly coming to a stop. The scene is gradually becoming clearer, it is ten years into the future, now we recognize that the town is Midway. we see large crowds of people hurrying to a church as if an event of great importance was about to begin. In a moment the scene has changed to the interior of a church, and what do we see but a bride and bridegroom standing before the alter. The happy pair are Maxine House and Billy Gilkison. And who is the preacher? He is none other than Jerry Montgomery, who graduated in the class of '5h. He sure looks sophisticated wearing glasses. Down front in the pews we see a few guests of honor, namely Ada Carol Wright, a noted Hollywood movie actress. She got her start when a talent scout spotted her in the senior play back in 1953. Also nearby are Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Graves. Mrs. Graves is the former Myra Wash, who is now famous for her invention of special hydraulic shoe lifts. Betty Jo Duncan, who is reporter for the social column of the Louisville Time is covering the story for the paper. She started her job as a cub reporter, and captured her big story' a year later when she got the exclusive story on Retta Richardson's exceptional job of private secretary to the President of the United States. As Betty Jo's personal photographer we find Betty Devers taking the wedding pictures. She received fame for her exclusive shots of Miss Dorothy Riddell's marriage to the multi-millionaire Herb Carpenter owner and proprietor of the famous Gladstone Palace Gambling Casino, the only gambling house in the world with friendly slot machines which refuse to take your last quarter. The scene now changes to the reception room of the Dale Hotel, the largest hotel in Woodford County, and owned by Mr. and Mrs. William Dale Jr., the former Ouida Bush. Over there shaking hands with the groom is the famous Paul Duffy, star for- ward for the New York Knickerbockers. He took up professional basketball on graduating from Notre Dame University. And now congratulating the bride and groom is the wealthy and sophisticated Annie Webster, with a beautiful tan she received while on her trip to Florida. She made her fortune with her Bubbly Bubble Gum Co., the bubble gum that blows square bubbles. And standing over to the side waiting to kiss the bride is the wealthy play boy Jim'Wcodrum, President of the Vito-Vitamin Pill Co. He has come a long way since his graduation from Center College. Standing nearby is Georgetta McLean operator of the Cutie Q Beauty Shoppe. She became a famous hair dresser when Georgeous George, the wrestler, cntered her shop for a cold wave, he now goes Ly thc name of Baldy George. And who is that with short blond hair? Oh,yes, it is Miss Alma Rigney famous vocalist for Spike Jones and his Band. And also present is the former Miss Margaret Sinmwrs who besides managing her husband and five children, is a famous Criminal Lawyer. Also in the crowd is Colonel Dou Baker, Colonel Baker has won fame in his exploits as a fighting Marine. He is talking to another Colonel by the name of Bill Cloyd. Colonel Cloyd has served valiantly in the service for man years. Both men have a chest full of medals. we see Mrs. Voigt asking for a class re- union at which we can talk over the events of the past ten years. Now that winsome old man, picking up his scythe and his hour glass is trud- ging on his way. The crystal ball is becoming hazy, and the scene is fast fading away. Alas--it is gone, but how happy I am to have had a glimpse of my class- mates ten years after our graduation from Midway High in 1953. 27 CAM 'MA , i We, the Senior Class of '53, Midway High School, being about to depart from this school,do make this our last will and testament.
