KIRK EY Rear Admiral Robert E. Kirksey was born August 5, 1930 in Atlanta, Georgia. He entered the naval service as an Aviation Cadet and was designated a naval aviator and commissioned an ensign in May 1953. He was pro- moted to rear admiral in July 1977. A veteran of more than 200 combat missions over North Vietnam, Rear Admiral Kirksey has flown both fighter and attack aircraft during his career. His initial sea duty tours included assignments with Fighter Squadron SIXTY ONE, the seaplane tender USS CURRITUCK CAV 75, and Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED NIETY FIVE. He subsequently served as Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron FIF TY FIVE and Operations Officer of Carrier Division ONE. In December 1972, he assumed command of the amphibi- ous transport dock USS CLEVELAND CLPD 75 which participated in mine clearing operations in Haiphong Harbor. From November 1973 to May 1975, he was Commanding Officer of USS KITTY HAWK CCV 635, the Pacific fleet's first multi-purpose aircraft carrier. He was Commander Carrier Group THREE prior to assum- ing command of Carrier Strike Force, U.S. seventh fleet and Carrier Group FIVE in August 1979. He has also commanded the SEVENTH Fleet Battle Force since October 1979. Rear Admiral Kirksey's shore tours have included duty with the Naval Air Training Command and several assignments in the Office of the Chief of Naval Opera- tions where he served as Assistant Head, Europe and NATO Branch in the Politico Military Policy Division from December 1968 to July 1970, Head of the Avia- tion Plans Branch from May 1975 to May 1976, Direc- tor of the Aviation Manpower and Training Division from May 1976 to December 1976, and Director of the Carrier Programs Division from December 1976 to January 1978. Rear Admiral Kirksey attended the General Line School and graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California. He has completed a one-year course of study at the National War College and earned a Masterls Degree in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1971. His personal decorations include the Silver Star Medal, two awards of the Legion of Merit, four awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat HV , twenty-one awards of the Air Medal, and four awards of the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat HV . Rear Admiral Kirksey is married to the former Viola 8 Kaikkonen of Detroit, Michigan, and they have four children: Jennifer, Robert, Gregg, and Andrew.
