The CATAPULT TEAM calculates the plane's weight and air speed and the catapult steam pressure to insure a safe launching. The ARRESTING GEAR CREW ensures safe landings of aircraft by maintaining the proper weight settings on the arresting gear engines. The entire operation is recorded on video tape by the PILOT LAND- ING AID TELEVISION CPLAT5 and FRENEL LENS OPTICAL LANDING SYSTEMS CLENSJ, which are manned by V-2 DlVISION's elec- tronics experts. ,lkt . Divided into three crews, V-4 DIVISION is tasked with the delivery of the purest fuel possible for air- craftaboard IVIIDWAY. First, the BELOW DECKS CREW has the mammoth job of supplying a daily average of 180,000 gallons of clean fuel for topside use. The fuel goes through three stages: C15 settling time, in which the crew allows dirt, water, etc, to settle at the bottom of the tanks, C27 purification, which removes almost one hundred per- cent of any water or dirt in the fuel, and C35 the filtra- tion stage, in which the fuel is passed through JP-5 filters, removing any impurities that might have been missed. The purified fuel is then received by the FLIGHT DECK CREW. This crew is responsible for promptness in fueling an aircraft, while observing all safety regula- tions. The third crew is the AVIATIONXFUELS REPAIR TEAIVI, which stands by for maintenance, connecting of re- fueling hoses, and any emergency concerning fuels on the flight deck. q-gg 5 64 ff- I Wu! CHARGER PHANTOMS also fly strike missions,-proving the versatility of their high perform- ance aircraft. VF 161's history dates back more than twenty years when the squadron flew from the decks of USS LEX- INGTON and USS RANDOLPH during World War II. The squadron was decommissioned following the war and recommissioned in 1960. VF 161 has since flown the F3B Demon with Air Wing Sixteen aboard the USS ORISKANY and the F4B PHAN- TOM Il with Air Wing Fifteen embarked on the USS CONSTELLATION and later the USS CORAL SEA. On 1 February 1971, the squadron became an integral part of Carrier Air Wing Five and joined the MIDWAY team. 315 HQ- 'f-5'15L- ,Z I .
