Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1983 volume:

Describe Midview, they said to me, turn the pages and you will see Down a country road, set in the midst of farmers' fields, is a school called Midview. Beautiful Ohio sce- nery surrounds us on our way to school. As we turn from Grafton Road onto Capel, we see the Midview sign proudly displayed on the bleachers of the football field. If we were to stroll around the outside of the school, we would find a well- groomed baseball field, a row of ten- nis courts and the now-quiet foot- ball field, the hub of fall Friday night activity. 2 Upon entering the Lobby doors, at the front of the school, confusion and excitement burst upon us. To our right, students head toward var- ious classes to begin their daily schedules. To our immediate left, looms the office, the nerve center of the school. t A Sometimes quiet - Sometimes loud Often cheerful - Always proud The Guidance Office is the next stop on our tour. Here, students are advised about their futures and giv- en help to successfully complete their high school years. The Guid- ance Office opens onto the All Pur- pose Room known to the students as the APR. As the name suggests, many activities take place here. At noon we come here for a noisy lunch. Later, the room quiets as stu- dents gather to study, pass notes, and sleep. If any student runs out of paper, pencils, or other school sup- plies, there is a spot at the front of the APR where they can be pur- chased. This is called the Bookstore. Someone bold - Someone shy Someone gifted - Someone sly To the side of the APR we find the Library, an island of quiet within the building. If we were hungry, we could grab a snack at the Breakfast Nook where breakfast is cooked and served by students. Not hungry? Then we'll proceed past the old gym, the band and choir rooms. Traveling along the wide halls, we remember the crazy nights decorat- ing for Spirit Week when every inch was aglow with signs and banners. 8 Something old - Something new Something silver - Something blue The final stop on our tour is the new Gym. Here, in a tournament- sized arena, Midview can host sport- ing events, plays, concerts and graduation ceremonies. Assemblies for the entire student body take place here and it is here that the Spirit of Midview comes alive! 10 MIDVIEW Junior Jamie Plumley escorted by Ken Byers Sophomore Carolyn Cox escorted by Randy Moore Sophomore Jennifer Ring escorted by Scott Rader Freshman Kris Von Alt escorted by Jeff Sny- der Freshman Lisa Squires escorted by Jerry Sny- der Queen Bev Neace and King Tom Staysniak Senior Diane Howell escorted by John Low- man Senior Wylie Enyedy escorted by Steve Peter Senior Heidi Geiger escorted by Jeff Butler Senior Kathy Kaehler escorted by John Fox Senior Theresa Avon escorted by Mark Petry- kowski The 1982 Midview Homecoming King and Queen, Tom Staysniak and Bev Neace, were chosen on a rainy Friday, Sept. 24 evening at the Mid- view vs. Wellington Homecoming game. Wellington came out ahead at the end, but only squeaked by with a 12- 10 score in their favor. Meanwhile the Marching Middies accompanied the Homecoming ceremonies with the Kenny Rogers song, Through the Years . The 1981 King and Queen, Doug Grignon and Angela Tomazic, crowned this year's royalty as the conclusion of the ceremony. 12 13 J The Autumnfest is becoming more and more a tradition at M.H.S. It has been held as part of the Home- coming festivities for the last three years. Each year the Autumnfest gets bigger and more exciting. Practically every club and organization had a booth this year with the new kid on the block, the Tennis team's egg throwing booth, stealing the spot- light. Definitely a great time was had by everyone who attended. j I 14 The Wellington mobile before the Middies destroy it. An egg-faced Greg Snider stands in front of the Tennis team's egg-throwing booth. An added thanks goes to Mr. David Moon and Mr. Arnold Sanders for all their help. From 7:30-11:30 the band, The Breaks, played on as everyone danced the night away. The gym was beautifully decorated in colors of sil- ver, purple, and dark blue. To high- light the colors were clouds, a moon, angels, and a mural of gates to heav- en. It was Halloween! About one-third of the students dressed up in a variety of costumes ranging from witches to flashers. Student Council put on the annual Halloween assembly. At the end of the day the student body filed in the gym and the classes competed to be number one. Winning four out of six events the seniors proved they were the best. Terry Correll and Steph Bolden combined to win the apple bobbing, Dave Rankin and Renee Schartman carved the winning punpkin, and Mike Hogan and Darold Hessel teamed up to win the pea- nut push. The seniors also showed the most spirit by winning the costume contest. Overall the juniors took second place with Jim Carpenter winning the doughnut eating contest. Coming in third were the freshmen. Robert Overy and Sue Peter won the toilet papering contest. The sophomores finished last. The seniors show their spirit and smile big for the camera. Hurry Steph Bolden! Get that apple from Terry Correll. Those weebles sure are cute. They are Steph Bolden, Wylie Enyedy, and Ann Thomas. Did Rob Krosky get sick eating all those doughnuts? Look at those sexy cheerleaders, Shawn Staz- zone and Charles Woolfork. Renee Schartman and Dave Rankin smile as big as their winning jack-o-lantern. 19 The 1983 Junior-Senior Prom, We've Cot Tonite, was held in the new gym on May 7, 1983. The gym captivated the evening by being decorated with hanging stars from the ceiling, park scenes, and a ga- zebo. The band, Prisoner, played until 12:00 p.m., when everyone then traveled to the Elyria Y.M.C.A. for early morn- ing activities such as swimming, basketball, jogging, and rac- quetball. 20 Opposite page: A group of Midview Seniors gather around to take pictures at one of the decorative fea- tures. The Midview High School Football team es- tablished themselves as definite contenders in the Lakeland Conference this year by posting a very impressive Conference 4-2 and (6-4 over-all) record. The team, which featured a gutsy defense, and an exciting gambling offense got stronger as the season progressed. Gary Larkins, Dan Urig, Tom Staysniak, and Don Vesling earned all-Lakeland First Team Honors, with several other additions to the second team. Midview senior, Dan Urig, earned the Coveted Lom- bardi Award as the best lineman in Lorain County, then going on to earn all Lorain County and all Ohio honors. Gary Larkins quick steps his way into a host of oncoming tacklers. 70 Jay Overy was honored team M.V.P while Tom Walker received most improved with Roger Warner earning the coaches award. The season peaked when the powerful Vermilion Sailors invaded Midview, bringing with them high conference hopes . . . but Midview rose to the occasion and ousted the Sailors from the conference picture. The success didn't stop at the Var- sity level. The Midview J.V.'s went on to post an excellent 6-0-1 record in the Lakeland conference and a 6- 3-1 record over-all. The ingredient here was also much like the Varsity, as the J.V. team outscored their op- position 134-56. By the performance of both teams this year, the future looks bright for continued success for the Midview football program. Middies Tom Staysniak and Jay Overy are in hot pursuit of a Wellington ball carrier. Midview's Tom Staysniak attempts to shake a Wellington tackier after hauling in a pass from QB Jay Overy. Middie QB Jay Overy shows the form that enables him to complete over 60% of his passes during the course of the season. Greg McLean leads the charge and clears the way for another big gain by a Middie back. Gary Larkins runs around left and on his way to an impressive 1,000+ yard season. 72 Cross country highlights u X Bottom row: S. Chapman, K. Grondin, D. Chapman, T. Avon, S. Sparks, C. Buchanan, D. The Midview High School cross country teams are a source of pride. The girls cross country team finished 7-3 overall and 4-2 in conference. Theresa Avon was named MVP for the season and placed 5th in district competition, which qualified her for state competition on Oct. 29. She finished 15th. Dawn Chapman was awarded most improved. In boys cross country Jerry Ma- joras was awarded MVP and Rick Barnette, most improved. Jerry Ma- joras and Brett Williams tied in the 5000m run at 16:48 to break a school record. The 1982 Midview Girls' Tennis team finished the season 2-4 in con- ference and 5-10 overall. Even though the season was not a winning one, third-year coach, Noreen De- marco, is looking forward to next season because of the young team she had playing this year. Wylie Enyedy and Tricia Tomko, second and third singles, are the only girls graduating, leaving the number one singles, Inga Lenzer, the number one doubles team, Jennifer Pollock and Angie Buyer, and the number two doubles team, Kim All- top and Carrie Tomko, returning for next season with much potential from the girls that played junior var- sity. This year Inga Lenzer received the MVP trophy, Tricia Tomko got the Coach's Award, and Kim Alltop was Most Improved. Volleyball 76 Midview is tied for title with Oberlin The 1982 Midview Varsity and Ju- nior Varsity volleyball teams had an outstanding season this year. Varsity won twenty games and only lost two. Junior varsity did just as well with a record of 16-0. Both teams went to tournaments, JV being undefeated, varsity sharing the title with Oberlin. Varsity's most valuable player for 1982 was Heidi Geiger. JV's most im- proved player was Julie Wallace. Kathy Wilcox made First team All Conference, Sandy Flint and Heidi Geiger represented Midview in the All Star Conference. Shelly Heron had highest percent for serving. Losing to Vermilion in the last match of the season cost the team the conference title spot and made them settle for a disappointing sec- ond place. Posting a 15-3 overall re- cord and 7-2 conference record, the Middies had nothing to be ashamed of, finishing 3rd in the Lorain County Invitational. Losing Senior co-captains J. Butler and S. The freshmen defeated Brook- side, Wellington, and Amherst and tied with Clearview. The boys worked very hard to put their tal- ents and skills together to make the season a success. With the tal- ent of the freshmen boys and the undefeated eighth grade team, Midview will look forward to a very promising future in football. During the 1982-83 basketball season, Midview fans were treated to the halftime performances of the Pep Band and the newly-formed Drill Team. The Pep Band is a group of 25 band students which per- forms popular music during breaks in the home basketball games. Mr. Lichtenberg is the director, but often different students, including Matt Wingate and Mike Hogan, have directed the Star-Spangled Banner , which the band plays at the onset of each Varsity contest. Fame , Tailgate Ramble , and Championship are three of the Pep Band's more well-known songs. The Drill Team, affectionately known to Midview basket- ball fans as the Skippers , was formed for the first time this year. Mrs. Davidson is the advisor. The Drill Team performed marching, pompon, and dance routines to selections played by the Pep Band. Bottom row-R. Longwell, J. Sim, M. Hogan, D. Grimmer, M. Vrooman, J. Carpenter. Row 2-M. Logar, T. These students organized cheers, pro- moted spirit, and added to the already electrifying atmo- sphere of Midview High's basketball games. Mrs. Fink was the faculty advisor for the Pep Club. Student officers were: Connie Mullican-President, Amy Kovacs-Sec- retary, and Tom Litterer-Treasurer. The aim of the club is quite simple. It is to provide an organized cheering section for Midview's hardworking ath- letes. Because the idea of the Pep Club was acted upon late in the school year, the club was unable to actively take part in football season. The club does hope, however, to participate in the 1983 football season. The Pep Club hopes to boost its membership in the future and establish its identity among other more well-known clubs here at Midview. 92 J. Szlempa V. Tablett Juniors K. Tackett C. Taylor D. I hope you have en- joyed viewing it as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. Being editor has been a challenging exper- ience, trying both my creativity and my patience. I would like to thank the following people: Dave Pataky, our representative from Jostens, for coming to the school whenever asked and for help in solving numerous problems that we ran into. Hal Briggs Photography for doing piles upon piles of photographic work for us, no questions asked. Thanks also, for always being avail- able to take pictures whenever needed. Steve Husk for the many photo- graphs he donated to the staff. Rozie Kuriger for all of the artwork she did for each of the divi- sion pages. The PUB staff for all of their time spent on the yearbook and all of their patience with me. I couldn't have done it without you. Rick Rymers for all of the help and support he gave me and for the ex- cessive hours he spent helping me. 208
