I’m honored and proud to be saluting you. Honored as I am, I was given some limits. Mr. McIntyre said, “Don’t take more than five minutes.” “But why me,” I asked and he answered with a smile. Because you’re getting old and you’ve been here a while. But on with the Toast” — that’s my main chore. I appreciate your attention while I have the floor. After 12 long years of schooling, it appears you passed the test. You’re a member of the Class of '80 - you have the right to think you’re the best. For some it was so easy, for others it was no fun. You even hated to get up in the morning and greet the rising sun. I know you won’t forget your teachers, they were behind you 100%. In some cases I know — for you over-backwards they bent. Congratulations on your accomplishments and contributions — you’re leaving your mark behind. There’s no ifs, and’s, or but’s about it — people like you will be hard to find. Yes, I’ll have to admit — your smiling faces will be missed walking down the hall. But, remember what I told you — save your string we’ll have a ball. As you graduate and get together for the last time - on Sunday, June 1st. Mark my word — a lump forms in your throat and you long to quench your thirst. As you fidget in your seat — your eyes fix a stare. You picked out Mom and Dad — your favorite pair. The name-calling starts — your walk forward in slow gear. You’re the pride and joy of both parents and doggone they're shedding a tear. Now, a “Toast” to your future - what will you do and where will you go Keep in mind - the doors here at Midview will always be open — stop back often and say “Hello.” If you go to work and accumulate wealth Remember the main thing is to stay in good health. To those who settle down and choose your husband or wife Don’t forget that alcohol, tobacco, and drugs arc not needed in your life. If you’re going on to college — study hard — and if it's possible maybe study a little harder. Because for crying out loud - we need somebody to replace “Peanuts” Carter. I’ve used up my time — so I’ll bid you adieu. The very Best of Luck and May God Bless You. 44 Thank you very much. 46 In Memory Of.. . Edward Lee Moore September 26, 1962 Jacqueline Louise Cartwright August 23, 1964 November 1, 1979 May 18, 1980 We see the sun setting And the orange-blue sky fills our hearts with a sadness It is the ending of a day and the ending of a life Even though you are gone the memory of you will linger on in our minds forever. And we will see a new sun rising And our hearts will be filled with love And we will both have the chance for a new beginning. - L.J. The Middies Keep Going Outstanding performances by Sue Crow in singles action and Jean Burke and Sue Ferritto in doubles action helped the Mid- dies make it through a long and grueling season. Senior Sue Ferritto was awarded the MVP trophy while the Most Improved award was given to Kim Peter. 78 Young Team Looks Ahead The nine-man team composed of six freshmen, one sophomore, and two juniors, found the 1980 season to be a learning experience. Although there were many good performances, the extremely young and inexperienced team looks for an even better season this year. Dave Burke was the recipient of the MVP trophy, Eric Pe- terson was awarded the Most Improved trophy and the Coaches Award was re- ceived by Dale Lenzer. Dale I.enzer gets the hall hounding with a powerful serve. S-T-R-E-T-C-H!!! Darold Hessel attempts a return from side court. Not everyone can handle this kind of racquet. This is the best season record posted in the girls' three year cross country team history. Sue Walker, Nora Hess, Cindy Jackson, and Carrie Enderby also paced the team to victory. Losing only one senior to gradu- ation, they look very promising for the 1980 season. Wendy Johnson received the Coaches Award and also shared MVP honors with Julie Vinoverski and Jeanette Lewis. 80 Nervous tension is best when shared before a race. Team picture. Row 1 (I to r): S. Walker, N. Hess, W. Johnson, Row 2: C. Jackson, J. Y'inoverski, J. Lewis, C. F.nderby. Best Season Ever Sue Walker persistently heads for the top of the dreaded “Bonsai Hill”. Julie Vinoverski finds time to talk to spectators after the race at the Midview Invitational. A victorious finish. The team that places first, sec- ond, and third automatically wins a duel meet. An early lead for Midview at the dual meet against Vermilion. This was to be the Sailor’s undoing as the Middies won 19-37. Coach Thompson gives a last minute pep talk to Sue Walker, Nora Hess, and Cindy Jackson. Harriers Have Harrowing Season The 1979 Boy’s Cross Country team ended its season with a disappointing 3-4 Conference record. As the team is losing four seniors, this year’s team depends on the three remaining harriers. The MVP trophy was awarded to Mark Bechtold and Mike Seres was the recipient of Most Im- proved honors. 82 i Mark Bechtold leading the pack at the Midview Invitational. Mike Seres shows the determination and drive nec- essary to succeed in Cross Country. Jim Dirling exerts that “extra” push needed to get up “Bonsai Hill”. This familiar sight is located at Sheldon Woods Park where the annual Midview Invitational and the home meets are held. Mighty Middie?? Joe Henry seems to think so. Karen Hobar, Peg Hogan, and Patty McCarty won recognition for serving. Jane Rader was awarded most valuable player, and Sandra Withrow was deemed most improved. Karen Hobar does ballet. Two of the losses were to an unde- feated Vermilion team (both home and away). The team split matches with North Ridgeville, sectional winner at Pinebrook Golf Course and Amherst who finished second in the conference. The team was young and graduated only three seniors. The cagers tied for first with Wellington in the Lakeland Conference race. In tourney ac- tion the girls lost the first game to Mag- nificat. Special honors go to Jane Radar for being voted unanimously to the All- Lakeland team and for receiving the MVP award. Ty- ing for second in the Conference with North Ridgeville and Oberlin at 9-5, the Middie cagers finished the season with a 13-11 mark overall. Senior Pat Rhyner, 1980 MVP, was voted unanimously to the All- Lakeland Conference team. Effort Due to many injuries, the Junior Varsity Boys’ Basketball squad had a tough season finishing with a 2-18 record overall and 2- 12 in the Conference. The concentrated effort by the team kept them only a couple of points behind the opponent in most cases. Anna Murtaugh, Tami Hop- kins, Mary Peter, Luane Miller, and Leigh Smith attended the district meet. Although they did very well, their scores were not high enough for them to attend the regional meet. Since they will have an experienced group of sophomores and will be losing only four seniors, the team should negotiate a power- ful season next year. The Middies were ready to meet the challenge, but lacked the nec- essary experience to produce any wins. This should be helped by the expansion of the wrestling program into the 7th and 8th grades, and the loss of only two seniors for the 1980-81 season. All in all, the team showed a lot of improvement from start to finish, and should come back with a very productive season this year. Grapplers Try Hard . The 80’s possess new beginnings, experiences, chal- lenges and adventures for all of us here at MHS. I have started out this decade as a senior at no better school than Midview High. Everything that happened here that concerned me and people closest to me have made an impression that will always be a part of the way I am. With all that the future holds for me, I hope that you, too, are given the opportuni- ty to do what you believe is the best for yourself. I would like to thank Julie, Ann, Brenda, Genny, Laurel, Kim, Lance, and Chris for giving me ail of their help in making this Log the best ever. We had our share of problems, all staffs do, but we worked them out and gave it our best effort. I would like Mr. Rymers for letting me do what I wanted to do and not forcing me to do what he wanted. I would like to close in thanks to Midview High School and everyone in it for making these past three years the best of my life. I)ee Groboske 208
