I am afraid to try the “new”—more comfortable with the old. But I’m tried of doing the same things over and over. I have to go on, get out of this rut, open new doors. College? Work? Marriage? All new doors. I’m really get- ting scared. New faces, new places, new things to see and do. No more ruts. 5 Another New Door. Should I try it? Can I make it? Will I be accepted if I do make it? 1 am afraid—can I accept rejection? All those challenges behind another unopened door. A new chance to get out of the rut. 6 fs 13 And I think . . . no, I know, it will be worth it. administration faculty Administration Phil Sheffield, Asst. Principal Charles Bcshara. Asst. Homecoming And Parents Night Shared Spotlight Before the Midview-Vermilion football game, the senior football players, cheerleaders, and band members received recognition along with their parents. Following the Parents Night Act- ivities, the Homecoming Ceremony began. Last year’s Queen and King, Rosie Rotuno and Bill Marozan, ended their reign by crowning Mid- view’s 1978-1979 King and Queen, Dean Rice and Lisa Farrar. The freshmen representatives were Sharon Withrow and Kelly McCartney; sophomore representatives were Robin Iski and Cindy Mesaros; and the junior representatives were Renee Sherrill and Robyn Shutts. The 1978-1979 Homecoming Queen candidates were (I to r) Diane Plas, Judy Plas, Lisa Farrar, Margie McBride, and Kim Gribbcn. 26 27 Reach For A Star The evenings atmosphere was noticed by the couples the moment they entered the doorway. The Student Council did a very good job of disguising the lockers and showcase with planets painted on black paper. Black and strobe lights added to the effect of “Reach- ing for a Star.” The traditional court dance took place with mysterious clouds surrounding the royalty. From 8-12 p.m., the couples were entertained by Crystal, much to everyone’s liking. 29 Halloween Assembly Seniors, Sophomores Take Top Billing 30 It was a close race between sopho- mores and seniors at this year’s Hal- loween festivities. The seniors and sophomores won 2 events each. The Sophomores won the pumpkin carving and the costume contest. The Seniors picked up the T.P. your teacher and Apple Bobbing contests. But it was the seniors who came through by winning the Peanut Rolling Contest, breaking the tie. Many people dressed up, in- cluding teachers, which added to the fun. My don’t we look lovely today, my dear! 31 Events Highligh Midview Our 1978-79 school year at Midview featured many special programs and events of student interest. Among these were Disco lessons and an assembly given by the Junior class, as well as Halloween, Christmas and rock concert assemblies presented by the Student Council. 32 As our spirit grew during the year, we had many ways of showing it. Scholastic “M” a- wards were given to twenty seniors for their grade-point average. Another special feature of the year took place outside our school. The Preparation for Marriage classes went to the First Congregational Church for a mock wed- ding. 33 We’ve Got Tonight The Junior Class presented the Jun- ior and Senior Prom, “We’ve gat To- night,” at Wagner’s Country Inn in Westlake on May 12. The evening began with social hour at 7:00. Dinner began at 7:30 - 9:00. Dancing immediately followed until 12:00. Music was pro- vided by “Westfall.” Afterprom was held at the Elyria YMCA from 12:30 - 3:30 and also Cedar Point on May 13. J4 35 37 Seniors Open Door To New Beginning On Tuesday, June 5, 1979, the senior class of Midview High School graduated 267 seniors. The class was led by valedictorian Barbara Demby and salutatorian Barb Bungard. Student speakers for the ceremony chose the theme “MHS In Your Future” on which to build their individual speech topics. Barb Bungard spoke on “Memories”, Dean Rice on “Harmony”, and Barbara Demby on “Spirit”. The baccalaureate address was given by Rev. Father Nicholas Novosel. The class gifts were presented by Dean Rice, senior class president. A new office chair was given to Mr. McIntyre, and an awards case for the new gym was presented to the school. Music for the ceremony was provided by the Midview High School choir and band. 38 - Pictures inad- vertently omitted from Senior pages: Jill Lucia, Cyn- thia Carroll, Jos- lyn Bierlein. 39 41 Infancy Of Poems, Youth, And Spring This Way To Heaven L. to R. Approximately 130 students from Midview attend the JVS; this total is composed of 52 seniors and 78 juniors. The programs they participate in are varied. Many students choose to go to the JVS because the programs they enter train them for a specific field of work. This gives them experience and most stu- dents can obtain excellent jobs in their field after graduating. 76 Juniors J. Adair J. Adkins S. Aldrich M. Almodovar S. Amend J. Amspaugh J. Archer M. Laurie Byerly copped the MVP award, and was on the all-conference team along with Jane Rader and coach Linda Motznik. 119 120 Golf Team Burns Up Courses The golf team ended its season with an 11-6 overall record, and a 10- 4 mark in conference action. Art Gula and Jeff Withrow led the Middies by averaging 37.2 and 40.1 strokes per match respectively. Gula, who went to the district match in Barberton, won the MVP award for the third year in a row. These are the elements the Girl’s Tennis Team faced this year. Devoted practitioners of their sport they deserve high com- mendations for completing a season of eighteen matches in two months. Although their record was not outstanding, they did manage to better last year’s attempts by two wins. Con- gratulations on a fine display of teamwork. Overall, the Middies were 10-2, with an eighth place finish in the 20- team sectional meet. It was the best finish ever for a Midview team in the meet. Mark Bcchtold won the MVP award, while John Harbeck was most improved. Injuries Stymie Girls C.C. Plagued by a scries of injuries, the girls cross country team finished with a 1-2 conference record, and a 3-2 overall record. The MVP this year was Julie Vinoverski and the most improved player was Sue Walker. Since there weren’t any seniors on the team this year, the outlook for next year is good. 125 Varsity Basketball: Behind the vocal student body and the Baseline Bums, the basketball team have had one of their most successful seasons ever. The Middies finished with a 14-5 overall record and a 13-1 record in conference under first-year varsity coach Dick Bickcl, which was good enough for the Lakeland Conference Championship. The Middies will lose starters Dean Rice, Rick Morgan, John Bush and Grant Turner but are looking forward to another success- ful season next year centering around Pat Rhyner who was the Lakeland Conference shooting champ with a 19- point average per game. Besides winning the conference crown, post-honors went to Rhyner, Rice, Morgan, and Scott Terry for the All-county team, and Ryner, Rice, Morgan for the All-conference team. They ended the season with a lackluster 0-13 record. Perhaps the single most exciting moment of the year was their last game of the season, when the Middies were tied with Vermilion in tourney action. With Five seconds to go and the score tied, a Middie hauled in a rebound from a Sailor shot, but lost the ball on the outlet pass, and a Vermilion player shot it in for the game winner. Coach Bollcnbachcr has another shot next year, as a new crop of Freshmen invade the halls of Midview High. MHS. OPP. 32 Clearview 63 38 Oberlin 50 29 Wellington 52 23 Vermilion 52 25 Ely. The effort put forth was overwhelming, but the team lacked the experience necessary for a winning season. There were bright spots, however, as Greg Thompson, Mike Taylor, A1 Elswick, and Jim Tyree received second place honors in the Lakeland Conference Tournament. A third place finish went to John Patton and Greg Benson. The Middies lost five seniors in '79, but look for a strong comeback with eight returning lettermcn. Row I (L to R): Coach Gomoll. Mgr. J. Girls Track-The Agony Of De-Feet Extremely young and inexperienced, the girls track team, composed of two seniors, five juniors, and twenty- five sophomores and freshmen, started out rather slowly but had a strong comeback towards the end of the sea- son. The highlight of the season was the Lakeland Con- ference Meet in which seven of the season’s highest achievements were set out of fourteen events. Outstanding individual awards went to Sue Walker and Jeanette Lewis in the running events and to Jane Rader in the field events. The team achieved their first Lorain County Relays Open Division championship: 5th place in the sectional meet, the highest finish ever for a Midview team; scoring 6 pts. in the district meet and 4 pts. in the state meet. We are proud of the painstaking effort put forth, as well as, the rewarding achievements of the 1979 track team. Main St. Grafton, Ohio 44044 ise ROGERS’ STUDIOS PHOTOGRAPHY The staff of The Log would like to extend its thanks to Art Rogers of Rogers Studios for the excellent service he has pro- vided Midview these many years. An “institution” at Midview for over two decades. Art helped staffs on nearly every aspect of yearbook publication. His professionalism, friendship, and dedication to Midview cannot be measured according to any means. Thanks also goes to Hal Briggs of Hal Briggs Photog- raphy for his fine work with the staff this past year. HAL BRIGGS PHOTOGRAPHY 410 Lake Avenue Elyria, Ohio 44035 323-6222 189 Autographs Autographs 192 Another year, another yearbook . . but this one is dif- ferent—special to me. One of the hardest jobs I had was choosing a theme—something to hold the book together. This year’s theme presents a challenge to all people— the challenge to open new doors, take new chances. Being on Publications was the best thing I ever did— it opened new doors and presented new challenges to me. The people I met and the new things that I learned during this past year were innumerable. I made many new friendships and strengthened some old ones. I learn- ed a lot about myself, about the school, and about people. Publications is not all fun and games. We did have a lot of fun, but we also did a lot of work (the deadlines seemed endless)! The staff worked hard and I really ap- preciated it. So I’d like to thank Ann Marie, Craig, Sally, Kim, Marcia, Tom, Margie, Diane, and Mike for being such good Pub people and great friends. I’d also like to thank Mr. McIntyre for helping us with our money raising projects, and I’d especially like to thank Mr. Rymers for only making me cry once or twice.
