The team, scheduled for six meets, was coached by Larry Rowe, who had hopes for the boys even though their pre- vious record was O-5. With a determined spirit they opened their season against Elyria, Sept. 9, and went on to meets with North Olmsted, Elyria Catholic, Brookside, and Amherst. In their hardest fought meet, the harriers lost to Brookside, 31-24. Handicapped with a deficit of runners, the cross country unit ended its regular season Oct. 22 with a 24-36 setback at the hands of the visiting Brookside harriers. The Middie long distance runners went winless forthe year. , 5 if SOFTBALL TEAM MISSES CHAMPIONSHIP BY GAME The well-balanced Lorain County Girls Softball League for area high schools repeated its traditional, annual, nail- biting finish. Three schools-Midview, Avon, and Brookside-completed the regular season in a three-way tie, forcing the teams into a post season playoff. The Middie fly chasers drew Brookside in the opening round and lost to the eventual champions, 6-0, and finished in a second-place tie with Avon. The Middle hopes for a clear shot at the league title were spoiled during the regular season by a I4-i3 loss to Avon, the only blemish on the Midview record. The Middies de- feated Brookside during the campaign, 5-2. Other Midview victories came over Keystone, 4-1, Am- herst, 3l-6, Clearview, i2-O, Firelands, ll-5, and Co- lumbia, l8-2. lncidents off the field sometimes are as memorable as those on the field. This year was no exception. The players will recall Coach Fran Romino's inept promise preceding the Amherst encounter to buy refreshments if you girls score 30 runs. They did, and she must have had quite a bill. Every girl on the team took part in the victory. ,Q 2 3 5 Q it 4' iff, 1i .i OCTOBER. NOVEMBER. DECEMBER GRID YEAR PRODUCES FORFEITS Early season predictions for the Middie Head-Hunters were encouraging, but inexperience and iniuries reduced the team's effectiveness, turning the season record into one of disappoint- ment. Despite the depressing effects of a losing season, the team morale remained high as did the hopes of the spectators. Attendance exceeded the preceding year's turnout and never reached a discouraging low. Guiding the gridiron efforts were Head Coach Bob Fisher, Line Coach Ed Adelsburg, and Backfield Coach Tom West. Outstanding back and lineman awards were presented to Al- bert Stacey and Tom Walsh, respectively. Stacey became the first player in Midview history to gain four varsity letters in foot- ball. Senior lettermen Larry Yost, Jim Wiley, Luther Davis, Don Gusto- vich, Al Stacey, John Weslow, Bob Paris, Bill Krause, John Mad- lem, Tom Walsh, Phil Strouse, Tim Benko, Joe Slclenar, and John Sklenar played their last high school football Nov. 4 against Oberlin, closing out the season with one victory, seven losses, and one no contest because of a double forfeit involving Ridge- ville. wx I 1 1 5 M MW 81 016 'G GEORGIA GRILLS REIGNS AS '65 HOMECOMING QUEEN As the football team retired to the locker room at half-time between the Midview-Clearview game, five Homecoming Queen candidates and Their four attendants were escorted onto the field. The crowd, along with the nine representatives, were eagerly awaiting the announcement of who would receive the honor of reigning as the 1965 Homecoming Queen. The girls were previously introduced at a combination Home- coming assembly and pep rally held the Friday before the perennial event. Unaware of the final decision of candidates, the representa- tives, as well as the student body, entered the assembly and anxiously listened for the names to be called and for the girls to ascend the stage steps. Dave Tharp, Student Council president, slowly announced that the competing queen candidates were Dicie Bruhn, Karen Rob- son, Georgic. Grills, Maureen Ross, and Judy McDonough. These girls were to be attended by Freshman Denise Davis, Sophomore Kathy Dachner, and Juniors Nancy Stann and Barbara Hawke. Even though Midview had played a good defensive game, the half-time score was frozen at 20-O in Clearview's favor. The crowd stilled and everyone seemed to be concentrating on the press box announcer's voice, except co-captains Albert Stacy and Bill Krause, who were worried about last minute ceremony details. The name was announced, and the football captains advanced toward the girls ready to robe and crown the new queen. Georgia Grills tearfully accepted the queen's attire, and took her place with the court on the field bleachers to watch the remaining half of the game. Undaunted by the game's final score of 20-12, the smallest queen ever chosen by Midview students reigned over one of the biggest events of the school year, the Homecoming dance. Dampened spirits turned triumphant later in the year as Clearview had to forfeit the game making it Midview's first Homecoming win in three years. - Z 3 A ' ' . Trouble begins when Joe Ferguson, a former Mid- western football hero and Ellen's old boyfriend, re- turns for a visit. As it this isn't problem enough for the Turners, an in- tellectual student, Michael Baines, writes a very con- troversial article as a result of a lecture delivered by Professor Turner. The results are far-reaching and comical. Portraying the leading roles in the play, directed by Miss Beverley Glemser, were seniors Darryl Johnson as Tommy Turner, Pat Hess as Ellen Turner, and Har- vey Johns as Joe Ferguson. Also in a lead role was freshman Debbie Blackburn, Ellen's sister. Other students participating in the play were Brenda Burns, Larry Herwig, Charles Wuensch, Paul Shriver, Becky Beal, Mike Kekic, Shelle Riedel, Ed Rodgers, and Steve Hronec. Student director for the produc- tion was Linda Wesemeyer. I 5 62 BOWLERS ROLL OVER PINS FOR 222 'S BUT ALSO 29'S Rolling out of the high school and into the Grafton Bowl- ing Lanes every Tuesday afternoon, 60 members of the intramural kegling league bowled their way to astonishing feats. The team captained by Tom Kilpatrick pinned the loop championship down by taking a three-game roll-off from the second half champs, captainecl by Georgia Gill. Senior Bob Young grabbed honors for the highest game and series totals for boys with 222 and 564. For the girls, Connie Snyder pulled in the title for both departments with 203 and 528 totals. Chuck Meldrum's team rolled the best game and series totals for a team with 820 and 2233. Laura Huber, sophomore, had the dubious distinction of bowling the lowest single game total, 29. SCHOOL SPIRIT SOARS IN DRIVE FOR SIX TONS OF CLOTHING Generously answering an open appeal to support the Save the Children's Federation, Midview students contributed l2,09O pounds of clothing during a Student Council sponsored clothes drive in November. Six tons of clothes, the overwhelming response from residents as well as staff and students, were sent to the Appalachia region. The heart of the area, which spans nine states, is located in the mountainous region of eastern Kentucky, one third ot the area's four million inhabitants earn less than 33,000 a year. Faculty members and staff helped to generate excitement, and enthusiasm by presenting a skit to launch the appeal. The inter- class competition totals were measured by thermometers, which eventually extended up a corridor wall and across the ceiling. The freshman and senior classes stayed in close conflict during the week-long contest, but the seniors proved to be the superior collectors with 3,663 pounds of clothing and were rewarded with free admissions to a Student Council dance. Midview was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Save the Children Federation for the hard work of the students. ff' I W,,,,,..,.-0-- gi an VICTORY ELUDES FACULTY IN ANNUAL 'FUN' SERIES After a short, grinding, grueling season the Mid- view High faculty basketball wonders produced another losing year with an O-l record. Renewing the annual series with Midview Junior High's hardwood crawlers was a useless eFfort for the wonders as they lost, 40-34, Dec. 4. The margin, however, was much closer than the year before. Authorities believe that the high school quintet is iust a year or two away from a possible victory. Scoring honors for the losing high school cause went to Ed Adelsberg, who is also known for his bowling prowess, and Wendell Hayes. Each player ripped the nets for six points. Pickle Bickle and Goofy Gainer sparked the winners with lO markers each. The volleyball batters from the high school lor the team considered to be from the high schooll shored up a much better evening, winning two of three matches to become mythical champs of the yearly battle of teachers. , 67 CLASS OF 69 Patricia Abbey Ronald Abi: GY Linda Adams Terry A dams Bill Allen Pa Jeff Anderson tty Alltop Eric Anderson Gary Anderson Kathy Andrews Robert Arms Jim Austin Jay Baksa Robert Ball James Balogh Randy Bologh Stephanie Balogh Ernest Barth Bernard Bateman Becky Beal Barbara Benlco Daniel Betz Debbie Blackb Dale Bislline Nathan Black Ul'Fl Randy Boise James Bo isuenne Barbara Bowls Edmond Bowhan De bbie Brady William Brady Elizabeth Breeden Frances Breeden Russell Brown Rudy Burden Paula Burdette Cheryl Butler Edward Burgess Mike Byars Sue Byars Mike Butler Richard Buzas Gregory Cadger Sherry Ca rducci Dea n Carpenter Marcia Chapman Vicki Claphan John Clark Patricia Clanin Teresa Cogdill Christine Coleman Linda Codren Nelson Coon Diane Cotton Pai Covey Larry Crawford Gerald Cricks Denny Crnolat C15 Robert Crowell Lois Crum Craig Davila Denise Davis Pa ul Davis Ted Wayne Wayne Dawson Stephen Dean Linda Degraphenreed Ronald Del Sesto Arthur Dennis David Devereaux William Dickenson Tommy Dillinger William Dolan Chris Dove Donna Dill Brian Downs Amy Drawl Rae Dreger Shirley Driver Joan Dusky Dan Durham Keith Du Vernay Ken Du Vernay Jo Anne Dye Ron Edwards Philip Eidam Clyde Ellis Reva Ellison Sandy Emody Gary Engler Katie Ertl Elizabeth Essex Blaine Farr Ned Fenderson Ron Filmer Sandra Finchum Helen Fokszanskyi Ellen Foley Cheryl Foote William Fox Gary French Nanette Frawley Bob Frey Merry Fritz Bob Fry Helen Fuller Dick Gallaligan Polly Gal Rasema loway ry Gannon Marlene Garvner Gail Gereke Anthony Gibbon Larry Goglin Sue Goins Reva Gal Carl G Carl Gest s dsmilh omall Bonnie Gorgan Clarence Gray John Gross Donald Haag Linda Halbl Todd Hal Sandra Barbara Gross aub es Hall Clement Hance Mark Hanna Colleen Harrison John Hardy Noreen Harrison Karl Hawke Dannie H Ken Hi erwig Cks JoAnne Higneff George Hill Mike Hinds Bud Holcomb Dale Holly Judy Holl Bruce Hills Y Jane? Predicted losses became wins, and predicted wins became losses. The varsity ended the year with a 7-lO record and a fourway tie for third place in the Lakeland Conference. The season saw Ed Adelsberg replace Henry Smith, who had guided the Middies for ive years, as new head coach. The team will be inexperienced and not too fast, said Adelsberg as he started the year with only two returning lettermen, Al Stacey and Bob Paris. Stacey, the year's most valuable player, along with Rich Hawke, Don Gus- tovich, Luther Davis, and Bob Paris, were senior lettermen lost by graduation. We will miss the five seniors, but l think we have a good chance of having a winning season next year with the iuniors that are coming back, said Adelsberg. Bright outlooks will be enhanced by the addition of players from a iunior varsity team which posted a i4-2 slate and captured the mythical Lakeland Conference crown for reserves. APRIL BRINGS BAND STATE SUPERIOR 88 l i 1 f I uf I I HOUSTON, MADLEM LEAD INDIVIDUAL MAT EFFORTS A combination of strength, ability, and tactics are qualifications necessary for a winning wrestling sea- son, and although team wins in the victory column were low, several boys continually excelled in their weight classes proving that individual potential was high. Returning veterans opening the year were John Berkebile, Randy Houston, John Madlem, Mike Kekic, Chuck Early, and Tony Smith. New mats and novice gropplers proved to be a win- ning composite as the matmen captured four firsts and took third place honors in the Middie-hosted Lakeland Conference Wrestling Tournament Feb. 12. Randy Houston and John Modlem advanced to dis- trict competition after competing in the Sectional Wrestling Tournament where both boys were seeded and drew first round byes, Houston, Midview's lightest grappler, finished third in the sectional, winning three of six bouts, Madlem came in fourth. They qualified for the district by being among the top four finishers in their divisions. Midview's presentation was a world premiere. Under the direction of Miss Beverley L. Glernser, Sneaky Fitch was originally scheduled for only a student showing during the afternoon of May but was given a seconrd time that evening for the general public. The farcical tragedy was written by James L. Rosenberg and is set in a mythical townxof the old west. Sneaky Fitch was produced on the gymnasium floor in thrust style with the audience seated on three sides of the performers instead of in front of a proscenium stage. The drama department also presented a bill of one-act plays in the spring, qualifying one for state finals in Co- lumbus. Passion, Poison, and Petrifaction by George Ber- nard Shaw was rated as good in state competition.
