S porTS Another successful year in athletics has been completed by the Midvale Blue Devils. This year will be long remembered as one of the most thrilling in M1dvale's history. The Midvale High School Track and Field team went down fighting with a third place in the Invitation meet at Uriohsville. In a dual meet with West Lafayette, they emerged victorious. They won the county meet by an over-whelming score in which Sugarcreek was their closest competitor. The Midvalers came in second at the District meet against keen competition. The Midvale nine started the 1959 baseball season off with a bang. We met Tuscarawas at home and, behind the consistent pitching of Bill Holmes, we piled up a lopsided score of 12-5. Then we met Port Washington and downed them easily by a score of 15 to 5. Due to Bill Haney, promising Goshen lad, the Midvale Blue Devils were able to down a tough Bolivar team 6 to 2. The Devils edged Tuscarawas in a hard fought battle, lO-6. Journeying to Bolivar in our next game, the Blue Devils had to fight an uphill battle, but finally came out on top 12 to 8. We tasted defeat for the first time when the Gnaden- hutten Indians set us back by a score of lO to 4. The Midvale Blue Devils began thel959 basketball season by win- ning the firstfour games in easy fashion. In the fifthgame we met up with our old rivals, the Strasburg Bengals. The contest was close, but finally ended in defeat for Midvale, 22 to 20. The Blue Devils then went along smoothly until they met Dennison, where they met de- feat for the second time by a breath-taking score of 17 to 16. After drubblng Dundee 45 to 27, we met Strasburg for the second time. With nBuzzyn Young showing the way, we over-whelmed the Bengals 50 to 21. We again hit our stride rolling over Sherrodsville and MineralC1ty. Our third and last defeat of the regular season was to Bollvar,l7 to 15. Next we walloped a strong West Lafayette five by a score of 41 to 29. In our last league game we edged Tuscarawas 58 to 56. The season ended in a three-way tie for first place in league games. We won our first two tournament games. In the third, we defeated Tusky 29-25. Ford, with four seconds remaining to play, gave Midvale the edge over Strasburg, 28-26. We trounced Millersburg and Berlin to earn a position at the District in Dennison. There wedefeatedChest- erhill 59-54. In the finals we drubbed West Lafayette 56-50, making us the District representative to Columbus. In our first game at Columbus we met Bluffton and beat them 45 to 55. The rangg Smith- field bunch defeated us 59 to 29, thus ending our season. e have quite a number of new trophies to add to our already goodly number, a league trophy, a County Tournament trophy, a District trophy, and individual medals. Good luck to Baldwin, Leggett, Dallau, Johnson, Morrison whose dazzling basketball careers ended with this season. We hope that the teams in coming years will have many more successful seasons for good old Mldvale High and that they always live up to our ideals of sportsmanship. 52
