Businesses in the Midland area work with members of the MHS staff to provide MHS seniors with parttimejobs during the school year. Mr. Short is the supervising coordinator at Midland High, and he arranges interviews for pro- spective co-ops with many different businesses. These jobs not only help the seniors earn money, but they teach them skills that can be very helpful after gradua- tion. Whether they work feeding rabbits in the Bio-Med lab at Dow Corning, typing stencils at Jefferson Interme- diate, or making deliveries for Community Drug, these young adults are developing skills, responsibility and pride in their work and themselves. MICHAELA V N SATZGER Micky is an exchange student from Stockholm, Sweden. Her school there is one of about five hundred students. It is located in an apartment building in the middle of Stockholm, so there are no tennis courts or football fields, but there is a large park where they have gym classes. According to Micky, this can be very embarrassing. Students take school much more seriously in Sweden than they do in America. They cannot choose what courses they want to take, but they can choose along what lines they want to study. These lines include Math, Language, Economics, Technical, and others. Micky had sixteen subjects, and said that school in Sweden was much harder than in the U.S., and because ofthe differences in the school systems, the students are different IOO. Micky says that she really likes Midland and MHS, and the people have all been really nice. She says that she has had a great time and she will always remember Americans as very nice people. ,if i .,,-4 -M--an I ARJA PELTGKANGAS Q Arja comes from a small town in Finland named Nurmo. Her school is in a larger town about fifteen minutes away, called Seinajoki. Her school has about 700 students between the ages of eleven and twenty. Children in Finland start school when they are seven. They have four years ofelemen- tary school, five years ofhigh school, and then three years ofwhat is called Gymnasium, comparable in America to high school. In Finland you can't pick what subjects you would like to have, but as in Sweden, you can pick a line to study, such as math or a language. Arja says that MHS is much easier than her school. In 1973-74, she was in the first year of Gymnasium, and her subjects were: Religion, History, Psychology, Phys. Ed., Art, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Music, Swedish, Finnish, English, and German. fDon't get any ideas, school boardlj Arja really likes Midland and Midland High. She has seen many new things, and she says everyone has been very helpful and friendly. She lives with Grace and Jerry Tingstad, and they have been to Colorado, Wiscon- sin, Minnesota, and other states. 53 We also have with us this year Raul Urena Raul is from Costa Rica One of the reasons he is with us IS to learn English so that he can go to a college in the U S One of the most evident differences that Ralil has noticed since coming to the U.S. is the climate. In Costa Rica, the average temperature is 700 all year around. You can see why therels no snow in Costa Rica! According to Raul, the language has been a huge change for him. Like the majority of Costa Ricans, Raul studied English in high school there, but he still has trouble with it. He says that it is a lit- tle difficult for him to understand English, and he has a much harder time speaking it. Raul really likes MHS and says that it is a very pretty school. It is different from schools in Costa Rica because there, schools have uniforms that all the students wear so there is no distinction between the social classes. Even with our distinctive dress, though, Raul has met many very nice people who have helped him a lot, mainly with English. The spectrum of sports in Costa Rica is much the same as here, and, as football is the most popular sport in the U.S., soccer Csim- ilar to footballj is the most popular sport in Costa Rica. Howev- er, Costa Ricans also swim, play basketball, box, race cars, play baseball, play tennis . . . And of course, ride bicycles, which is where Raiil comes in. He is the National Champion of Bicycling in thejunior division in Cos- ta Rica. While he is here, he is training in MHS Crunning up and down stairs and generally working outj and on the road with our own Chuck Trzcinski, the Physics teacher. Raul says that he hopes to keep training for competitions, either here or in Costa Rica. RAUL URE A 5 . s 1 l i 1 5 Q z 1 S .' l H 1 ll i l Margaret Brooker Q was It wasn't until I stepped off the plane at Tri-City Airport and was confronted with snow that I fully realized the numerous changes involved in shifting from New Plymouth, New Zealand half-way around the world to Midland, Michigan. New Zealand has summer from December to February officially, but the seasons are not clearly defined and there is no real spring and autumn. Also, the seasons are not extreme, most of New Zealand d0esn't get any snow. Although Midland has the same population as New Plymouth the whole resemblence ends there. New Plymouth is on the coast and is built on hills. The whole province ofTaranaki is dominated by the 8620 ft. Egmont in the south and the 650 ft. power station in the west. Compared to this Midland seems to have no landmarks. My sense of direction has been further upset with the sun being in a different position, added to which we drive on the left side of the road in New Zealand. Even crossing the road as a pedestrian I look in the wrong direction first. In New Zealand the shops close at 8:30 on Friday evening and reopen at 8:30 on Monday morning, so except for a few dairyfgrocery stores the country shuts down for the weekend. Being able to shop almost any time day or night is an entirely new experience. Shopping is bewildering with large selection of unfamiliar products and brands. The American and New Zealand education systems have very little in common and I had difficulty equating courses. The major difference seems to be the Concentration on specialized branches of one particular subject whereas in New Zealand the one subject is more generalized, covering all aspects. Each school day has a different schedule, usually with each lesson 45 minutes long. The lunch breaks are an hour's duration and there is a 15-minute interval mid-morning. The most obvious difference is that Americans do not wear school uniforms as in New Zealand and this includes nojewel- ry or makeup. I personally perfer uniforms as they save a lot ofbother, competition and prevent social distinctions. There is also no eating or chewing in classrooms. Although the education in New Zealand is free we pay nominal school and sports fees and provide our own starionery. My impression here is that there is a great deal ofwaste. Although English is my mother tongue, the difference in accent and terminology have created some problems in making myself understood. The generosity and helpfulness of the American people is making this visit a truly marvelous experi- encef' S5 ADMINIST R ATION ST AFFS A L it I' lx X 1 W , .,,. If it was, it was in serious trouble because once again it was time for the Annual Physics Egg Drop. As ever, the objective was to create a container for the aforementioned egg so that it would survive a fall from approximately 500 feet and the ensuing impact. Bright and not- so-early on that Saturday morning, the hoardes of physics students seeking some phun, phootball, and phriends headed out for the great outdoors of Midland County. Some were even brave enough to bicycle the I0 miles out, led by none other than MHS's phavorite physics teacher, Mr. Charles Trzcinski. Meanwhile, a friendly pilot flew his plane, carrying all the egg boxes plus two unwary helpers, out to the appointed place and dropped them fexcluding the helpersl to Hnish the experiment. Some didn't quite survive, but the majority remained intact, thus concluding another successful Egg Drop on a beautiful fall day with lots ofgood times for everyone who was there. 1 wi. di 1 ' , . . v W .Ma rf' ' Q mi, M 7 ' 6?- f--' ai' .-, gg. The Drama Club, under the advisorship of Mr. Randall, has spawned two plays during its 1974-75 season. The first, titled Here and Now , was shown in the fall, and was a resounding success. The second was an all-student play named Charley's Aunt , and was directed by Lani Ewing. Contrary to popular belief, Lani did recover and is now able to watch one-act plays without screaming, Despite various doubts and qualms, the play went off sans hitches and proved once again that women are good for something be- sides baking cookies and scrubbing floors. The Drama Club once again proved itself to be an excellent proving ground for some of Midland's finest theatrical talent. The MHS Marching Music Machine: A group oftalent- ed, loud, rowdy people who slave away to perfect intri- cate formations while playing such pieces as Big Spend- er and g'Yellow Submarine . At a typical practice ses- sion, after watching Mr. Stark and Drum Major John Kurtz screaming and yelling at 90 grinning band mem- bers, you sometimes wonder if they can do it, ifthey can perform expertly in from of a bloodthirsty grandstand of football fans each Friday night. Fear not. This band has upheld a tradition of excellence in marching for many years, and the seniors of each year never let the rookies get away with anything. The MHS Concert Band: Some- wherein the middle of December, a bunch ofloud, undis- ciplined, shade-wearing hoods quietly transform them- selves into one of the finest concert bands in Michigan. With the band's history of top ratings at district and re- gional festivals, it is easy to see that Mr. Stark has the ability to draw out the talent from each member of the band. The pride in being a top concert band member makes everyone try a little harder, and it shows in each piece of music. 196 TOP LEFT: The MHS Marching Band leads the Homecoming Parade. ST GE BAN The Midland Stage Band was directed this year by Pat Onan. Bruce Arnold and Kevin Cook. These three must have done an excellent job. ifthe performances ofthe band are any reflection on their work. The band's performance at Rhapsody Rendezvous was especially great, proving that their sound is unique and one ofthe best in Mid- land. The Stage Band also played for the cerebral palsy charity campaign and other functions during the year. This year the Stage Band became a Junior Achievement company. This is the first time that this has ever been done. and also the first time a company has been formed as a partnership instead of a corporation. TOP LEFT: Drummer Bob Brines - where it all begins. L HAPPENINGS l 'I K Q ,ff b- ff-Ci, L HOMECOMING Homecoming 774 was a time for the whole school to pay tribute to the football teams, the Queen and her court, and the people who worked on the floats. The football team had a spectacular game, winning by a sizeable margin. Queen Jen- ny Bath reigned over the festivities with beauty and poise. The Homecoming Parade and halftime were a great success, helped by the presence of the MHS Marching Band and the floats, constructed by the classes and clubs. The night before, the cheerleaders led the snake dance and then led cheers around a roaring bonfire. At the pep assembly, the MHS teaching staff put on a highly surrealistic skit, presumably about Midland High, but the mass disorder they displayed in lampooning the students couldnlt be further from the real MHS. The trophy for the loudest cheers was won by the junior class, beating out the wheezy class of 1975. Homecoming '75 was a success all the way. Yes, people, school spirit still exists. It's eight o'clock in the evening and all the student bodies begin crawling out from under their collective rocks, dressed in their best grubbies to gambol in the gym. Thus began the annual cornpone and grits celebration, Lumberjack '74! Astigafa, a band on tour from New York, provided the music and in return the students provided the entertainment, performing such exhibitionistic antics as calling the hogs , Qsomehow quite appropriate at MHSJ, wars of tugging, and the traditional growing of beards. Paul Timmons and Rick Carter bellowed a melodious duet that won them the hog-calling. Barry Ballard CThe Fuzzj won the beard-growing contest for the second year in a row. Cheer up, Mr. Szok. Get some Christmas spirit! Rhapsody Rendezvous is a major event of the year for the music department at MHS, and also for many talented in- dividuals. This year Rhapsody featured acts from all areas of entertainment, including singing, dancing, . . . and egg- laying. The show was put together by those three paragons of musical ability and infinite patience, Misters Holtz, Ral- ston, and Stark. After this production, all three could be seen muttering Never again , but actually they are just as proud as the participants. And since they do such a fantastic job, we all want them to continue as long as they can. You see, like hundreds of thousands of other children, she was born with fluid on her brain. But thanks to our silicone shunt, implanted to drain the fluid away, she's as normal as blueberry pie. Or any other kid on a bike. Thats only one of the wonderful things weve been able to do through the miracle of silicones in the last 30 years. We've also developed silicones for pacemakers and other life-assisting devices. And, in implant form, to help people who've been disfigured look as natural as before. There are even finger joints made from silicones that help people crippled by arthritis regain the use of their hands. Thats just the beginning. There are thousands of other uses. Our silicones are in cars, buildings, fabrics, television sets, spaceships, you name it. The list seems endless. Not all of them save lives, naturally. Mostly, they only make living a little better. Here at home in Michigan, and just about everywhere else. But after all's said and done, our hearts still belong to Jerri Lynn. DOW CORNING Daw conmsa 224 ACE HARDWARE 419 E. MEIER STUDIO AND CAMERA SHOP Your Full Service Photographic Center 122 W. Main Midland 832-2l0l 247 Life is a unique challengeg life is timeless. The time stretches on forever. We work at a million objectives which never stop coming. What final moment of victory is there in life? The runner sees the tape coming and the distance melts away. The swimmer sees the wall loom up and his goal is within reach. Life's goals, however, are far more abstract and chancy. Because no amount ot personal pain can guarantee each of us our goal, frustration comes. Possibly we should strive to reach each other instead of goals? All that stops us is our own thoughtlessness. How much pain and disappointment is involved in a smile? Letis reach our goals by reaching out. i lj' . aa'-ff' Endsheets: Coppyrlght 1969 Dick James Music Ltd. 0' Used by permission.
