The 1957-1958 session of Student Council began this summer when Larry Morris and Lonnie Cohoon attended the National Student Council Convention in Roswell, New Mexico. The actual school year activities started with the annual Magazine Drive. Again, as in the past, the goal of S10,000 was exceeded. The four officers went to the State Student Council Meeting in Ann Arbor. Ten delegates were also sent to the Arrowhead Student Council Conference at T. L. Handy in Bay City. Besides sponsoring assemblies, Student Council also sponsored a cam- paign to encourage students to get their first polio shot. This year's Council endeavored to up-hold the high standards of Stu- dent government maintained by previous Student Councils. ROW 1: Mr. Linden fsponsorl, C. Grasley lpublicity chairmanl, L. Let the earth hide thee! Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold, Thou hast no speculation in those eyes Which thou dost glare with! Although the above is a quotation taken from the pages ot Shakespeare's famous Tragedy of Macbeth, a good memory will recall that it is also a line from this year's Dramatics Club presentation, GHOST WANTED. The Dramatics Club devotes much time and hard work to making a success of one of its biggest proiects the tall play. Members have the opportunity to participate in all phases of play production. Even greater experience is afforded them now since the play runs for four nights instead of one as in previous years. Besides producing plays, the Club participates in many other activities. The Club float this year, HATFUL OF RAIN, took second place in school competition. The Spring Speech Contest, sponsored by the Club and Thespian Troupe 902, is a big event for speech and dramatics students alike. Adding to the costume wardrobe and scenery shop has also been a time-consuming proiect. For fun and relaxation the Christmas Banquet provides dining and entertainment presented by various Club members. Ot course, the whole year is topped off with the impressive and solemn cere- rnony of initiating new Thespians into the Troupe and with another big banquet. T957-T958 has indeed proved to be a successful and fun-filled one for interested Dramatics Club members. ROW l: L, Reinberg lvice-presidentb, C. Eyler lpresi dentl, J. Shortly after, the Ja-Oui-Si had election of officers and then launched into a school year packed with fun and activities. ln December the Club had its annual Christmas potluck. Activities in the new year included a skating party at Central Park, with refreshments afterwards at the Community Center, and a trip to the lnternational Festival at Michigan State. The Midland High Stocks and Bonds Club was created this year with the signing of the charter and the approval of the by-laws. This club gives seniors a chance to become more familiar with the stock market. Investigating committees recommended various stock in the fields of air craft, automobiles, chemicals, electronics and drugs. Stock which met with the approval of the members was purchased with club dues. The active participation of the members, and the excellent guidance of the sponsor Mr. Abrolat, made the Club's first year a success. ROW 1: C. Gould, E. Whittier, G. Gerould, S. Csponsorj, J. The Varsity Club, in order to understand sportsmanship and teamwork better, brings together all letter-winners. Throughout 1957-58, under the leadership of its officers and sponsors, it was highly successful and active. During the year, the Varsity Club sponsored the annual M Dance, the election of the Homecoming Queen and her court and a basketball game featuring the Harlem Magicians. The team scored 80 points against Owosso, which is the highest score Midland's team has had, and Mike Westley scored a record 70 free throws this season. The team did well in the Arrowhead Confer- ence, too, tying with Bay City Handy with a 4-2 conference record. LeeRoy Milner made the All- Conference team, and Tom Axtell, Skip Barclay, and Mike Westley were given honorable mention. There was really no star this year - it was definitely a team effort that won the games. The boys came from a 5-5 record halfway through the season, to a final lO-7, losing only the last two games. The top five scorers of the team were: Mike Westley-l98 points, Tom Axtell-197, LeeRoy Milner-183, Skip Barclay-157, and Richie Waite- l IO. Back next year will be Skip Barclay, John Furman, Gordon Ranger, Tom Upright, Paul Ham- mer, and Richie Waite - the nucleus of a pretty fair ball club according to Coach Keith Carey. But he pointed out that they will have the right frame of mind and a desire to win, and be willing to put in time and effort to improve - things that the coach can't do for them. lf they do, next year's season should be even better. .lunior Varsity Basketball The JV basketball team had a very successful season in 1957-58. The team's l3-2 record is the best record a Midland High JV basketball team has ever had. Starting the season with three juniors and twelve sophomores, the team found three of these sophomores lost to them by the end of the season - Ken VanWert because of an in- iury, and Dale Chase and Tom Upright moved up to Varsity. The team continued on its winning way, how- ever, and many of the boys will furnish stiff competition for varsity positions next year. F , mv ' my Exim ,..n Q 'lg J K3 N v U egg? 1 x 1 , I if is 8 .
