The l957 Chemic Midland Senior High School Midland, Michigan Editor-in-Chief George Hardy Assistant Editors Marilyn Bull - Betsy Chamberlin Faculty Advisor Mrs. Phyllis Kent c Dedication Mr. Chester L. Coanes Over a decade ago, Mr. Chester L. Coanes volunteered to serve in the capacity of advisor to the CHEMIC staff. His efforts to improve each annual, to bring recognition to Midland High School, but most of all, his achievement in giving each student a truly repre- sentative picture of our school, are deeply appreciated by all who receive the CHEMIC. To Mr. Coanes, who gave freely of his time and enthusiasm so that the student body would have vivid and tangible reminders of their school years, we, the students of Midland High School, respectfully dedicate the 1957 CHEMIC. Prill Edwin Kelly Reppert Arthur Harold Roberts Barbara Jean Robinson Clifford Ellsworth Ross Jr Linda Louise Stark Joseph Walter Taylor Elmer Dale Thurston Jerome Vincent Wazny Senior Class History 1955 We entered our first year at Midland High with a feeling of awe and not too much confidence but the Sophomore Sodbuster, class elections, and the soon to be familiar round of Kardex cards broke us in, and we started at a good pace which never seemed to slow down. Responsible for a big part of the impression we made in- our first year were the officers that we thought were really great. For president we chose Fred Swinehartp vice-president, Kaye Baker, secretary-treasurer, Sherrie Vinton, girl representative, Barb Tomlinson, boy representative, Pat Ludwig. Mona Shepherd represented us on the queen's court for our first Homecoming season and we were really proud of her. We also got to know our class sponsors - Miss Yeomans, Miss Patmos, Mr. Jane, Mr. Panella, Mr. Wang, and Mr. Cummins - and thought that we were pretty lucky in having such good ones. A busy year full of sports, contests, classes, dances, assemblies, and lots of fun left us looking forward to the summer months and dreaming of swimming pools, suntans, and camping. We all antici- pated coming back in the fall, however, to renew friendships and resume where we left off, but this time as upperclassmenil 1956 Did we look like that? was heard all over the corridors from us as we watched our sophomore friends try out their wings. But soon we found among them many friends and another year began before we realized it. Our Home- coming representative was pretty, redhead Peg Otway and our float, Cheaper By The Dozen, placed among the winners. After this merry whirl was over our class officers - president, Phil Barrons, vice-president, Ann Gronemeyer, secretary-treasurer, Mona Shepherd, girl representative, Kaye Baker, boy rep- resentative, Pat Ludwig - worked hard to make our class one of the best ever. We began to see that this might be the last year in this school for us as well as our senior friends, for progress was being made on a new school. It was relief at the time to know that next year there would be no iammed halls and crowded stairs. We turned out a beautiful gym for the Junior-Senior which we worked on for months and called Le Jardin des Roses. With this as a send- off, we shoved the seniors out the door and realized that at last we were the 1957 A shining new school was opened to us as we came back. Everyone got lost for awhile, but we soon got our bearings and even though we missed the crowded halls where we could see all of our friends, we appreciated the wide corridors and conveniences. We provided the queen for Homecoming this year and chose the girl of our dreams, blond-haired, blue-eyed Kay Winchell. Lorraine Ivan represented us on the court. This proved to be a busy year from the day we entered, but our officers kept things running smoothly. Our president was Pat Ludwig, vice-president, Kathy Brown, secretary-treasurer, Girlie Goodall: girl representative, Judy Huber, and boy representative, Clark Swayze. The lumberiack was our responsibility and we really put on a show. Another big event was the lowered prices at the local theaters. That made a big difference in budgets! Amid a prevalence of broken bones and sprained ankles, lockers spread with Elvis Presley, Sal Mineo, Tab Hunter, or some other rage, and excitement over concerts, contests, etc., we began to get ready for graduation and to work on getting those marks up. The events of cap and gown measuring, senior pictures, announcements and the Junior-Senior, Baccalaureate, and Class Night sped along and soon we were marching into the gym in our blue and white robes to receive our diplomas. That day, June 6, 1957, will always be treasured by us along with the memories of our three happy, helter- skelter years at Midland High. seniors. -Mildred Peets 1' Av 'Q' f ky f r A ,s 2 ' if I :Li Q .mn ,- 4 if f . Student Council The Student Council started out their T956-T957 school year by sending two representatives to the national convention in Toledo, Ohio. The two repre- senting Midland were Kay Winchell and Bill Bailey. In November, the council presented the school board with a check for S1500 for part of the cost of the Student Council room in the new high school. The magazine drive was one of the largest projects of the council, this year bringing in a total sales of Sl l,997. Twenty members of the council attended the Tri-County convention at Bay City Central. One representative was sent to the national convention in Roswell, New Mexico, in June. The council arranged various assemblies tor the student body this year. The exchange program with Traverse City proved to be beneficial to both schools. To pro- duce a first rate yearbook was a tremendous undertaking which required knowledge, skill, and hard work on the part of each participant. The first project was the organization of the Chemic. After this had been considered carefully, a dummy was created. Next, con- ferences had to be held with the photog- rapher and publishers. Pictures were taken constantly throughout the year, after which they had to be cut, trimmed and pasted. Letters had to be written and answered and information about the school clubs had to be collected. Captions were written for each picture and many advertisements had to be secured. These were only some of the many iobs which had to be done before the Chemic was completed and distributed to the sub- scribers. M. Berhenke, J. Stark, J. Sweebe, S. Moran ladvertis ing managerl, L. The purpose of the Vic Tribune Staff was to put out the school newspaper every three weeks. The staff worked continually to in- form the students of M. H. S. activities and to keep a record of school happenings. This year, a new plan of operation was introduced in the workings of the school publication. Instead of using two staffs as had been the custom in former years, one staff put out every paper for the T956-57 school year. Organization and cooperation among members of the Vic Staff greatly improved. Heading the staff in 1956-57 was Ann Cheney, editor. She was assisted by Elliot Tepper, assistant editor, Tom Bradley and Steve Sutton, co-sports editors, Jack Biggs, advertising editor, David Netterfield, business manager, Pat Lincoln, exchange editor, Miss Yeomans, advisor, and Mr. Coanes, photog- rapher. Thus participants were challenged by the greater opportunities for learning experiences. To initiate the school theatre, Our Town was presented four times in mid-November, giving the- maiority of the club and the Thespian members experience in producing a classic. Many of the members, who were students of the dramatics class, found further practical outlet for their training in December, as several community groups scheduled presentations of the three one-act Christmas plays which were prepared as regular class work. The CIub's annual Christmas party was another highlight of December, the banquet being followed by a Christmas play, and an original skit written and directed by John Smead. The annual speech contests in early March sponsored by the Club and Thespian Troupe 902, two evenings of three one-act plays for the public in the school thea-tre, and the senior play in April all contributed to the swift passing of a busy year. As its climax came the formal initiation of newly qualified Thespians at the banquet in May. ROW I: N. Fruchey ilibrarianb, L. Plummer ivice-presi dentb, D. Rinehart lpresidenty, G. Upon mov- ing into the new high school, the club's goal of bind- ing together all letter-winners in order to implant a higher regard for learning, good sportsmanship, team- work, and fellowship among its members and the school as a whole, was realized. Once again the club sponsored its annual M Dance and supervised the elections of the Home- coming Queen and her court. The main proiect embarked on by the club during the year was the establishment of a trophy case, in which the pictures of former coaches and outstand- ing players, along with athletic trophies were placed. ' For the third straight year Coach Bob Stoppert led his Chemic 1 ls to the Arrowhead Confer- ence Champlonship with a 3-O conference record. The 6-2 season was also good enough to rate Chemics seventh in the state. ' The squad's fine performances helped, also, to place Ralph Allswede and Oscar Hahn on all-state teams. Allswede received first team laurels on the various polls while Hahn received second team honors. Gary Jozwiak received honorable mention on two polls. ' i An unsung hero. during the season, Gerald Tucker who plays flanker or fullback, was voted by the coaches as the most valuable member of the team .' His fine blocking on Coach Stop- pert's patent pitchout and defensive abilities were an asset to the team. Voted by the team as the honorary co-captains of the season were Ralph Allswede and Gary Jozwiak, to be sure a wise selection for their leadership sparked the team all season. Though only a few boys received recognition during the year, all are worthy of all the praise that can be given to them. This year's squad was a coach's dream come true. Few teams have the determination and spirit that these boys had. Of the two losses, both were byioneftouch- down or less. ln fact, the games were so close that the score could have gone either way. The 20-i3 loss to Bay City Central was in a real sense a personal victory to they team. Central was rated second in the state and the Chemics completely' outplayed them. Several Central players stated that it was their toughest game of the season. When the Arrowhead Conference all-confer- ence team was selected Midland took most of the honors. Ralph Allswede, Oscar Hahn, Duane Wasmuth, Gary Jozwiak, Steve Marsh, Gerald Tucker, Don Daniels, Dave Alquist, Bob Hayes, Mike Westley, Dave Bennett, and Hubie Waite received either first team, or second team, or honorable mention on the team. Though there were many opportunities to roll up a big score the coaches substituted freely. Consequently, everyone had played enough quarters to receive a letter. This powerful little team showed that the varsity squad will have good material in the coming seasons. An example of their strength was when they ended their season by defeating Bay City Central's JV's 46-20. Every game each boy put out his best efforts to do the best he could. Spirit was very good during the entire season. In fact, it could well be considered one of their better qualities. Even though this year's varsity squad was tops, each JV player was right in there trying to earn a place on the top team, and in the end the varsity boys were kept on their toes. B. Groom, S. Kin, P. Usually the squad enters several Invitational meets, but there wasn't enough team strength to warrant it this season. The lack of material was attributed to the fact that there were very few sophomores on the i955 team. Again this year, very few underclass-boys came out for the squad. However, all four wins were against conference teams to give them an undisputed, second place in the unofficial Junior Varsity Arrowhead Conference Standings with a 4-2 record. Coached by Max Parsons, the iunior cagers were hampered by the constant reshuffling of the varsity squad. Just when five boys started work- ing well together, they were moved up to the varsity team. Despite the unsettled conditions, several sopho- more boys showed that with some experience they would be ready for varsity competition. Though outclassed in several games, they were always in there fighting. Of the eleven losses, six were by nine points or less, which showed that with a few breaks the game could have gone the other way. The two squads, who practiced at least twice a week after school, took charge of the pep assem- blies along with their other duties.
