Dining the gala football season, the band was honored with an invitation to play for the zone meetingof the Michigan State Teachers Association, held annually in Flint. The trip to Flint was combined with a tour of the Buick plant by the band. The Elks club sponsored a Saginaw this year with the football team. Hard work for the annual concert, in conjunction with the Boys' Glee Club, was climaxed in February. The 24th annual B1ue Note Bounce sponsored by the Band Club added a sparkin the school activities. Many long hours of practice were spent in preparation for the District Festival held at Mr. Pleasant during the month of March. A high rating at Mr. Pleasant meant the band also attended the State Festival at East Lansing, Michigan. An annual spring concert, given by all the music department served as the grand finale of the year. So the seniors could end on a hi h note the band played a Pop'sconcert in the band shell S . the last week of school. 4a Senior Band Members - - 1951 - 52 Adams, Amstutz, Armstrong, Arndt, I. CADET BAND The Cadet Band was just getting back on its feet again, after a year of ab- sence, due to the change over from the four year to three year high school. The Cadet Band played for some reserve football games and all parades during the school year. What they lacked in num- bers, they make up in spirit and effort. Mr. Stark was their director. PEP BAND Our Pep Band lent spirit as well as entertainment to the crowds attending the basketball games. TWIRLERS The hard working Drum Major and the equally capable Drum Majorettes deserve recognition for their many performances. Our skillful twirlers per- formed at numerous school functions through- out the year. Left to right are Pat O'Connor, Clara Dunn, Arlene McNett, Don Closs, Elnora Crosby, Elaine Bartlett, and Sue Purves. T ., 5 Q Cadet Band members include: Barber, Barstow, Cadman Cordes Corner, Cross, Fick, Gray, Hazzard, Horsley, Isham, Jensen Johnson Key, Loucks, McIntyre, Palmateer, Powell, Ranger, Retherford Rose Sherk, Stewart, Youngs. 4? fi Mary Sloan spent many worthwhile hours practicing on her violin. ORCHESTRA This year the orchestra saw new heights under their inspiring conductor, Mr. Guenther. More and harder compositions were performed this year than ever before. Oklahoma, Show Boat, and the Jamaican Rumba were among the more popular selections they did. Among their more serious selections were Dances from Henry VIII and Themes from the Rochmaninoff Piano Concerto. The students throughly enjoyed the several assemblies for which the orchestra played. The orchestra gave its own evening concert and played outside of school many times. Since improvement will always be their goal, more will be heard from the orchestra in the fu- ture. In the llomecom.ng, election Ann Shawwas voted official Homecom- ing queen and Connie Wegner was voted Senior Class Representativeto the Queen's Court. The snake dance and bonfire were a fine beginning for the Homecom- ing festivities which were held October 4-6. It couldn't have been a more perfect day for the Homecoming Parade, in which the Dramatics Club's float won first place. 'WW 'Qu 7476-file of ide aecwm - - Qfamecammg Our beautiful queen and her court were admired, although we lost our football game to Bay City Handy. Although Ann Shaw was elected our Homecoming queen, Connie Wegner reigned over the activities because Ann was ill. Connie and her escort, Jack Haskins, lead the grand rnarch at the Homecoming Dance which climaxed our Home- coming activities. Ann sent a letter to the student body showing her appreciation for the honor of being chosen Home- coming queen, although she was unable to reign over the activities. - S,-174 ff'-, :Fa--f.,, ' W. yur., Hi- 4-f,4 '.'.-Q' . 51351. 5-'t'-1-it: 3. The first duties of the council were to arrange dance dates, and concessions for football games. Also, two delegates, Laura Tweedie and John Corey, were elected to attend the National Conference of Student Councils at Wellesley, Massachusetts. The major project sponsored by the coun - cil was the magazine drive. With Dave Hil- derley as magazine drive chairman, over 57,800 worth of magazine subscriptions were sold. Homecoming activities, which were partially supported by the council, included a snake dance and bonfire coronation of the queen, parade, and dance. A cheer contest sponsored by the Student Council had a very good response, and pro- vided the school with some new cheers. Many other projects such as assemblies, honor awards, pep meetings, choosing cheer- leaders, and decorating the school, kept the students and the teachers cheerful and in good spirit. Most important were the excel- lent co-operation of the representatives and sponsors, Mr. Linden and Mr. Bryan, and the willingness to get things done. 44 Student Council officers for 1951-52 were: Willard Maxwell .............. DRAMATICS CLUB The Dramatics Club, open to all interested students, has as its chief aim the providing of experience in all phases of play production to as many of its members as possible. Opening the 1951-52 season, Green Val1ey, a comedy-fantasy was pre - sented November 30, 1951. Over sixty members of the club were in the cast and in production staff po- sitions. ln March 1952 an evening of one-act plays was presented to the public, with students directing the three plays produced. As an organization serving the interests of the school as a whole, the Dra- matics Club participated in several activities, such as serving food at three home football games, sponsor- ing a school dance in January, and sponsoring the spring speech con- tests in declamation, oratory, and dramatic reading. Club parties, open meetings at which outstanding speakers or entertainment was pro- vided, andthe annual spring banquet in May to honor members who had earned enough credit to become members of the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society rounded out the 1951-52 school year. The J,V.'s were somewhat lacking in ex- perience, as all of Coach Stoppert's key players from last year moved up to the varsity squad. However, the J,V,'s made up in spirit what they lacked in experience. After getting off to a good start by beating Alpena's reserve squad, the Little Chemics lost a few games, sprinkling a couple of wins in between.
