Baseball I CLASS HISTORY Starting off our four-year fling in this new high school was rather stunning at first. After about a week, though, we came out of the daze and swung into politics. As a result, Tom Nehil was elected President, Dick Kohls, Vice-President, Joyce Holser, Secretary-Treasurer, Barb Murch, girl representative, and Jim Hayden, boy repre- sentative. The following November 3, we entered an Armistice Day float contest, sponsored by the Varsity Club as part of the Homecoming events. Our float, with the theme Men in Helmets as represented by boys at one end of the float dressed as football players and boys at the otherend sitting in,a machine-gun nest, won first prize of 55, which was, at that time, very helpful to the Class Treasury. A On February l6th of the next year, we sponsored our class party, called Astronomy Strut. For this festive oc- casion we imported The Stardusters from Clare. lNo doubt you all have heard of this great orch.l After this, we ambled along until the end of the year, at which time we feverishly crammed for the finals, and then- No longer green little' Freshmen .we entered our Sophomore year bold and unafraid. l??l We started the year off right with Dave Nicholas as President, Jack lsonl Lee, Vice-President, Lennis Britton, Secretary- Treasurerg Tom Nehil, Boy-representative, and Aileen Manwell, Girl-representative. The distinguished Sophomore class had the distin- guished distinction of giving the first party of l94l and the last one before school ended in June of that year. The former was a record dance with the fantastical title of Surrealist Nightmare . Prizes were given to Buzz Bennett and Angeline Commora for wearing the loudest colors that night. The latter party was a creation of the well-known High Boys and was named appropriately after its theme, The Plantation Ramble Thus we ended another year of advancement. Oh happy day! At last we are being recognized by the younger classmen and have only one stronger race above us. Bob Shoemaker was chosen as the leader of our class, assisted by Dale Gerstacker as Vice-President. Aileen Manwell took over the responsibilities of Secre- tary-Treasurer. Barb Murch was elected Girl-representa- tive and Rod' Towseley was elected to the Boy-repre- sentative post. Due to Aileen ManweIl's moving from our fair city to live in another town Jean McPhillips was chosen to fill her vacancy. Annual Homecoming Events again were popular. Helen Red Bennett was chosen as a representative from our class to serve in the Queen's Court. A float was entered in the Homecoming Parade in the form of' Pres. Bob Shoemaker's stationwagon cleverlyl?l dec- orated. The best party of our career and certainly the most outstanding party of the year was the Junior dance, better' known as Kris Kringle Kopers, with music furnished by the popular band, Eddie Shay, and based on the Christmas theme. Another event sponsored by the illustrious class of '43 was proved successful in the form of a class play, Spring Fever . Eleanor Stewart and Bob Shoemaker were the two lucky students chosen for the Annual Honor Award sponsored by the University of Michigan Alumni group. They spent a glorious weekend at the college. Finally, exams and the Junior-Senior Banquet crept up on us. The traditional banquet was held at the Country Club with a college band sufficing the music. Jack Lee as general chairman of the affair achieved some grand results. Smoky really covered himself with glory with his super speech! Once more we felt triumphant over a party given by Our Class. As we close our class books and prepare for a peaceful summer to come back as proud seniors we have a touch of sadness in our hearts ii' ' Our last year in high school. An even tie for the capacity of President between Nate Noeske and Jim Bandeen was the result of the senior elections. Nate won after a re-election. Dale Gerstacker was elected Vice-President, Iris Bywater, Secretary, l'-li Visger, Treasurer, and Mike Sias and Loretta Zondolak, Union Board Representatives. Because of his job Mike found it- impossible to attend the board meeting, thus Don Christone was elected to take his place. Helen Sampson and M. J. Paddock were chosen by our class to represent us as candidates for the position of Homecoming Queen. By vote of the entire school Helen was elected Queen and reigned over the Homecoming football game and dance. Two succeeding Friday nights were occasions for events sponsored by the illustrious senior class. The first event was the play Hasty Pudding whose cast was made up wholly of senior class members. A week later a Christmas dance entitled Holiday Hop was our handiwork. ln spite of the fact that there was a poor crowd, a good time was had by all. Lennis Britton was given the D.A.R. Award for outstanding rating in all activities, including scholarship and leadership ability. All graduation events went off as usual with com- mencement exercises being ably arranged by Don Clarey. There were many sighs when we took off our caps and gowns, still we faced the problem of building the world with courage and confidence. BARB ARGYLE, JEAN McPHlLLIPS, JOHN MORRIS, ROD TOWSLEY, BARB MURCH, Chairman. CLASS WILL-1943 We, of the Senior Class of Midland Senior High School, leaving three jumps ahead of the faculty, leave these various comments and suggestions in hopes that all will benefit thereof: With immense satisfaction we leave the faculty for better or for worse. We leave the Juniors our rusty jack-knives so they can leave their mark, too. To the Sophomores we leave our dignity and sophis- tication. To the Freshmen we leave our dusty dried-out hopes. Chuck Varga High wills his uncensored drawings to the Vic Tribune covers. Marilyn Hunter wills her wild manner to Peggy Browne. Karl Bird leaves his flirting ability to Gerald Best. Jack Lee leaves everything, including Rockie, to his brothers. Henry Carpenter leaves his smooth looks to Tom Glamour-Puss Sinclair. Helen Dudley leaves Fred Lee to whoever will have him. Rod Doc Towsley leaves to grow up. Dale Atchinson leaves his F.F.A. pin to the future tarmerettes. Jerry Bartosek wills his B card to Nancy Collings so she can still get around. Leta Harding leaves her debonair manner to Mimi and Catherine. Doug Lee leaves his wit to Frddie Blackout Black- hurst. Van Arsdale Demske leaves his blond tresses to Betty Arndt. Joyce Jerk Holser leaves to get a steady before '44. Helen Queenie Sampson wills her queen's crown to next year's able beauty. 'Bob Moe Hunt leaves his filibustering in the Union Board to Don Lee. . Eleanor Stewart wills Doug, Am I ever ettin out 9 Q of here? Bark her brains. Jean McPhillips wills her cheerie hellos to Ruth Winston. Hi Visger leaves his athletic ability to Jim Doolittle. Willobelle Lyons leaves the men-she's engaged. Dot Walker wills her dancing ability to Jim Kendall. Bill Murphy leaves Phyllis Lowry to either a Fresh- man or a 4F. Dale Why do they call me Dirty? Gerstacker leaves his gentleness and quiet manners to Gordon Allen. Edith Adams and Myrtle Haskins leave to ioin their men through matrimony. Donna Mine's Natural Metcalf wills her red hair to JoAnne Callan. Nate Noeske leaves his football shoes to Dick Wil- Iiarhs. Don Christone wills his little black book to Scotty McCandless. Barbara Browne does not leave Mike Sias. Ruth Stein leaves her trim figure to Elayne l lost two pounds yesterday Cookson. Barbara Smith wills her bashfulness around the boys to Putt I finally got him Smith. Donna Mathews leaves to be another Rosie the Riveter. And at lost, John FIippo Morris wills the Flippant to the biggest sucker. PROPHECY-CLASS OF '43 East side, west side. Man! Has Midland grown! They say that Ace High's big helicopter plant has brought the biggest percentage of people to Midland since the big fox-fur rush in l952. A word about this fox-fur business. Henry Bugs Carpenter started it- a rumor that faxes had dug into a radium mine and become coated with it. However, enough of such stuff. I was walking around the town, or rather, city, and marveling at the changes time had wrought. In the school I ran into some old friends. Imagine my surprise to find Doug Lee lthe boss of the familyl, the janitor, married to Red Bennett and both-not one, but both- down on their knees scrubbing the halls. Will wonders never cease? El Stewart is now girls' physical ed. teacher and her ol' pal lhicll Helen Dudley is dietitian in the cafe lschool cafeteria to youi. Donna Metcalf still doesn't know what the score is! Willy Lyons, who still.retains her maiden name after six unfortunate weddings, is Chemistry Professor now, as Doc Tweedy moved to Iceland. Frank 'Ears l?l Behr is the big noise lor smelll in the Dow perfume works, and doing very well, too. Charlie Whipple has isolated a new organism, Whip- pliteers--King Sized which he claims will completely change the corn situation. John The Mayor of Our City Lee, after his affair with that Rockwell kid in high school, has for some reason or other developed a strange interest in tall, slim females. And he's' still a wolf. In mentioning Mayor Lee one always thinks of Ross lDonl. Our man Donald now drives a Buick, vintage of l928. Too many girls l?i loved him for his car in high -school and his mind snapped. Dick Kohls still wakes up screaming when he dreams of the Vic Tribune. Poor boy! Don't know what would happen if Bobbie lnee Paddockl lain't that fate?I weren't there to comfort him. The elder of the Pad- dock girls, Emma Joy or something like that, has re- signed herself to her switchboard for the rest of her days. Senorita Sola and her doves are now playing at the Gayity, which is managed by Gracie Britton. Leo Dean and Ruth Stein, the famous stage lovers, are starring at the Frolic lyes, I said Frolicl Theatre in a revised edition of Hasty Pudding. Charles Ducky High lthat other High boyl is starving in a garret. lt seems that Ducky started drawing landscapes. Ron Carsen Lowry has g'one off his nut! He's been trying to solve that joke which shows the ski tracks, one on each side of a tree, for thirteen years now. Might l also say that Ron is bowlegged now? There was a little celebration today. Bob Hunt, with tears in his eyes, got his long-awaited job of county drain commissioner. Major General Dale D l D for Dirty l Gerstacker and Rear Admiral James DeWese stood by to congratulate Bob as he accepted the job from Mayor Lee. Ah, Time, thou ever present of all things, where are the members of the Class of '43 today? Only you know -some time our lsobll grandchildren will know. Until then we are, Obeediuntly yours, ROD TOWSLEY, DON CHRISTONE, DONNA METCALF, MARY JANE PADDOCK. UNDERCLAQQMEN l If ii , gg? 93 Vg Q 1 Q . is E ! I ., an ,, , i 1:'- :II i Ii 1 ' 'i i in V' '7 .. 'AN PREDICTIONS These predictions by the Annual Staff are what we firmly believe will come true: Most Likely to Succeed: Boy-Daniel Z. Lincoln, in view of his whole-hearted interest in his beloved studies. Girl-Helen Bennett ldear old Redl, she just hated to miss school. Most Likely Not to Succeed: Boy-Douglas Dope Lee-Why didn't he work? Girl-El Stewart-We feel she deserves this honor. The Future Politician: Marilyn Hunter. By that time women shall run the world and Marilyn, whose blustery manner is known to all, should fit in well. The Housewife of the Future: Bonie Blackford, steady, reliable Bonnie, her quiet, sedate manners will long be remembered. Miss America: Phyllis Hartman, shy, quiet, little Phyl. What she doesn't do to a bathing suit. At this point we should like to have a short pause of silence for Dale Gerstacker. When Dirty Gertie gets in the Marines, Schickelgruber better run. Most Popular: Sincerely we should like to nominate Johnny Morris as the most popular person in the class and the school. All Time Sports Hero: Our future all-American football player, will be Dick Galloway in view of his intense interest in football and his beautifully muscled physique. Actor: Boy-Howard Garrett, the sheik of our class. Girl--Thelma Denton, because of her devotion to legitimate drama. Professor: Bill Wall, he shall continue his brilliant scholastic record until he achieves his goal--Professor of Physics at Crump U. Bubble Dancer: Clarabelle Anderson-need we say more? Hobo: Henry Carpenter shall wander to the ends of the earth and back spreading the gospel l?l of how insignificant man is. 44 CLUBS Q ANNUAL STAFF The Annual Office, 2l9, was a beehive of activity. The Club is composed of only those boys who are interested in furthering the activities and ideals ot the Hi-Y Fellowship. Because ot this, any metnber missing three consecutive meetings is automatically expelled. They must also keep their scholastic records above failing. Among the activities of the past year were a sleigh ride, a picnic at Emerson Park, a District Conference with representatives from Hi-Y Clubs in Saginaw Valley at Bay City and later at Midland with our club acting as host, the publishing of a small sheet for the AC basket-ball games which was given away free, and the providing of a hat-checking service for some school activities, the Policeman's Ball, and the AC games. The Club also sold candy until the candy shortage stopped this. The Second Annual Hi-Y Party once again turned out to be one of the top parties of the year. The Club meets once a week, usually Thursday, in Mr. Buys' room for the purpose of conducting all business which may arise during the week. Mr. William Buys as sponsor helped guide the Club through the last year. 48 Back Row: Kenneth Kortge, Frank Behr, Paul Wreo, Bob Brines, Dorothy Hoggit, Helen Grebe, Evelyn Sweet, Hazel Friedle. These entitled the holder to all club activities such as movies, games, and table tennis. - To further better the cIub's activities, committees were chosen, each one dealing with one phase of the club. These committees, each under the leadership of a club officer consisted of dancing, movies, tickets and games. The committees, in working toward better organization and entertainment, made plans for movies twice a week next year, and this year as many new popular records a mor.th as possible were purchased for the nickleodion. New paddles and balls were bought for the table-tennis, which was newly organized this year, and numerous games were bought for the game room. The Guild is governed by the Senate, which is composed of the present officers, a representative from each class and one from the honorary students, and the ex-consul and ex-Praetor. During the last year the Guild has experienced the most active seasons in its history. With profits gained from noon and after school movies the Guild started the Jeep Fund rolling along by buying a one-hundred-dollar war bond. Various types of monthly meetings were held and a picnic in June will climax activities for the year. Girls can also earn other awards, the highest of which is the sweater with additional chevrons. This year and throughout the duration the girls have had to limit their social fun to activities in town. Hikes were held, parties, hay rides, and roller skating at the Center. A National bowling tournament was held with six teams competing. The biggest activity is always the initiation of new members, which was held the last of March this year. Any athletic girl is cordially invited to belong. 61 'SWK wkhnnnnj' spons.. 3rd Row-Bob Betts, Dick Williams, Larry Eng- lish, Norm Kaweck, Ray Jeusse, Pat Spagnuolo, Leon Vlier, Bob Morrison, Warren Phemister, Don Smith 4th Row- -Coach Norris, Ron Lowery lMgr,i, Bob Closs lMgr.l, Jim Smith, Jack Vitkuske, Norris Manley, Tom Sinclair, Warren Morden, Jack Mc- Candless, Coach Yarger. lst Row-Bob Hunt, Dick Smith, Rod Towsley, Dale Rerstacker, Rollie Ray, Hi Visgar, Nate Noeske, Billy Murphy. 2nd Row--Hi Anderson, John Thompson, Jack Sinclair, Bob Ohlrogge, Bob Messler, Jim Dahl, Joe Mosca, Gene Gwisdala, Dick Slolsky. FOOTBALL Hoping to override a jinx that had kept them under the half and half mark for the past five years, forty-three determined boys greeted our new coach, Kenneth Yarger. Yarger had thirteen lettermen back from a mediocre team of last year to build his eleven around. With this material Yorker proceeded to build a ground attack from a formation that hadn't been tried in this school for many years. The first test for the Chemics was a trip to Fremont on a hot, were none too well set with boys back from the previous season them with the final score being l8-O. The next game was with on underrated Big Rapids eleven who boys, but Rollie Ray, the Chemics' captain, scored a touchdown to win the game 7-6. The following two games were played under the lights and After traveling all the way to Alpena, the Blue and Gold were they were downed at Owosso 6-7 in a hard fought battle. We next encountered an aggressive bunch of Flint boys who mopped up the wet field with us to the score of 32-O. sultry day. The Packers so Midland walked over almost stopped the local with Noeske converting were very disheartening. beaten I9-20 and then caught us napping and lt was a disheartened bunch of fellows who tried in vain to get back into the winning column by beating an extremely- strong eleven from Mt. Pleasant. The Oilers showed that you can't get along without fuel despite chemistry and beat us 27-6. Probably the most determined bunch of boys to ever represent this school made the final trip to Alma and played the best game of the year in holding the Panthers, who had pre- viously beaten Mt. Pleasant, 7-O. Not enough praise can be given for the defensive work in this game. There were five boys given the honor of being chosen on the annual selection of the all- conference team. Captain Rollie Ray, Midland's shitty back, was selected on the first team for the second year in a row. Dale Gerstacker, the oak post of the Midland line, was elected as center for the first team this year, jumping up from the second team of last year. Dick Ox Smith was the third man. He was chosen for the tackle position which he so ably filled on the Midland team all year. On the second team Bob Hunt was chosen at guard and Nate Noeske at end. Letters were awarded to the following: Seniors: Rollie Ray, Hi Visger, Jim Dahl, Bob Mesler, Rod Towsley, Bob Hunt, John Thompson, Gene Gwisdala, Bob Ohlrogge, Dick, Smith, Dale Gerstacker, Nate Noeske, Bill Murphy, Jack Sinclair. Juniors: Hi Anderson, Leon Vlier, Dick Solosky, Norm Kaweck. Sophomores: Tom Sinclair, Jack Vitkuske, Don Smith, Warren Phemister, Norris Manley. Freshman: Warren Morden. Managers: Ronald Lowry, Bob Closs, Frank Neeb. 64 Kneeling-William Bridge, Don Lee, Dick Smith, Cecil Rogers, Jock Vitkuske. Standing-Charles Burkhardt, Jack Sinclair, Coach Norris, Tom Sinclair, Ribby Manley. BASKETBALL A big job of construction faceu Ken Norris when he took over the coach- ing duties of Midland Senior High's basketball team, He had three letter- men, Sammy Visger, Nate Noeske, and Dick Smith, around which to build his team. The Chemics won the first game with Gladwin, but lost a return engage- ment by one point in the last seven seconds of play. ln the third game of the season, Mt. Pleasant administered a convincing defeat to the Blue and Gold. Here two veterans, Noeske and Visger, graduated. With a green team, Midland traveled to Clare to lose a l pointer in the final seconds. Another heartbreaker was lost to Mt. Pleasant by 2 points when the Blue and Yellow broke the deadlock in the latter part of the fourth quarter to win. A reorganized team iourneyed to Alma, and in spite of spotting them two baskets, with Jack Sinclair and Cecil Rogers doing the honors, Midland downed the Orange and Black. When the Chemics returned to home camp, they were heartened considerably by the Alma victory. They defeated Clare, dropped a game to Bay City Central, but made up for it by again defeating Alma. This is the first time in recent years that Alma has been defeated by a Midland team twice in the same season. Midland scored more points in her last three games than in her first six. The scoring com- bination of Rogers, Vitkuske, Lee, and Bridge seemed unbeatable. All of these boys will be back next year. Flint Northern defeated Midland in the tournament. Cecil Rogers, a freshman, was one of the most outstanding finds of the year. Dick Smith was elected honorary captain. Jack Sinclair, Charlie Burkhardt, and Dick Smith are the only seniors on the squad. The letter winners are: Dick Smith, Jack Sinclair, Charlie Burkhardt, Nate Noeske, Howard Visger, Cecil Rogers, Jack Vitkuske, Don Lee, and Bill Bridge. 65 BASEBALL Sitting-Duane Cook, Rodney Stark, Keith Ailswede, Norman Kaweck, Dick Smith, Robert Wolfe. Second Row-Wallace Graham, Ernest Petrie, Donald Clarey, Bill Bridge, Warren Howe Larry English, Junior Munger. Third Row--Glenn Cummings, Lynn Speaker, Jerry Bartosik, Richard Sirrine, Donald Mapes, Royal Playford, Eino Pulkiner. With eight Iettermen returning this year the possibilities of being the winners of the Central Michigan League look pretty good. Last year the team came through by trouncing Alma, who was the one and only school that entered a team in the Conference. The results of last year's team follow below: MIDLAND OPPONENTS 8 Arthur Hill l2 3 Arthur Hill 4 2 Bay City 5 6 Bay City 2 Conference Games 4 Alma 3 4 Alma 8 6 Alma 2 The letter-winners for the 1942 season were as follows: Larry English, Keith Allswede, Ernest Petrie, Dick Smith, Bud Howe, Troy Spann, Norman Kaweck, Mathew Larsen, Dan Lincoln, Royal Playford, and Delbert Simpson. All of these boys return this year with the exception of Troy Spann and Matt Larsen who entered the Navy and Del Simpson who graduated. The boys got off to a wonderful start this year by gaining revenge on Arthur Hill by trouncing them in the two opening games with two rousing victories over the boys from Saginaw. The scores of the games were l I-2 and l2-3. We play the first conference game Monday, May 3 at Mount Pleasant if the weather permits. 66 TRACK TEAM BACK ROW-Don Smith, Difk Wllli0mS, Lorance KNEELING-Joe Morrison, Phil. SPRING SPORTS Track The track team under the able guidance of Coach Ken Norris was a green one except for George Smith, Bob'Hunt, and Delos Woodcock who consti- tutedthe last year's returning lettermen. Along with these were some new ones: Lyle Yarrington, Bob Betts, Cecil Foster, John Houvener, Lowell Avery, Earl Peek, Mike Sias, Don Fosgitt, Ken Youngs, Warren Phemister, Jerry Brown, Miles Pike, and Bob Moe. These fellows all showed promise and those who are not seniors will be helping Coach Yarger build a winning team next year. Golf In spite of the shortage of golf balls, golf shoes, and lettermen, the golf team was again put in action under Tim Johnston. The men did the usual preliminary work on the Country Club course and then settled down to building a smooth and winning team. This was something which took har.d work for out of ten men only one was a last year's letterwinner. This man was Leon Wittbrodt and playing with him were Glenn Anger, Don Elliott, Bill Craig, Ed Cookson, Dick Kohls, Lewis Sovereen, and Russell Davis. Also out there pitching were Don Ross and Jim Bandeen, but because of their post-graduate standing they were ineligible to compete in any match. Tennis The tennis team in its second year under the guidance of Clarence Tope also had its difficulties with priorities on shoes and balls. However the squad worked out regularly in both intramural and varsity competition. The sixteen fellows out were divided into four teams so as to form two singles and one doubles on each team. Then each team played each other team for intramural awards. In the meantime Coach Tope watched these matches and from his observations, picked the nine best-qualified men for varsity competition. 68 First Row-George Bartos, Edward Brown, Jim Adams, Jerry Brown, Arthur Tomlinson, Gene De Geer, George Gay, Willard Kalawert, Bob Keeley, Earl James, Edward Wenglikowski. TUMBLING Midland High School has started something new this year in the form of a tumbling team. Ken Norris, basketball coach and physical education instructor, started the program around the first part of February. Tumblers were chosen from his physical education classes, but were not exempted from their class. Their first performance was given between the halves of the Alma- Midland basketball game. The squad worked hard and the crowd was appreciative. After this some new members were added, and some new stunts annexed. On May 5, a performance was given at a school assembly,-and on May 8, another performance as part of a minstrel show was given for a bond drive. Then on May lO, the squad put on an exhibition for the Kiwanis Club, one of the last of the season. A typical performance was: Forward rolls, backward rolls, hand springs, back extensions, high dives, long dives combined with push throughs, hand springs off the back, flips, crazy cat or log rolling, and ending up with Cl pyramid. Tumbling caught on quickly, and a good turn-out of boys helped to make the team a success. From all outlooks, it seems the tumblir-n team is a group that will remain with the school. PHYSICAL FITNESS PROGRAM ln September, l942, enrollment in the physical education department was l84 boys and 2l3 girls. Due to the war a program of compulsory physical education was started for the second semester. This program consists of gymnastics for all iunior and senior boys who are physically able and as many freshmen and sopho- mores as can be accommodated. Those juniors and seniors who are unable to take this work are given training in first aid. Gymnastics, home nursing, and first aid make up the course for all junior and senior girls. Freshmen and sophomore girls are allowed to take gym- nastics and first aid. There are now over 300 boys and 400 girls taking port in this physical fitness program.
