Eagles Clutch Mid-East Championship he Midland Eagles boldly attacked conference foes and set an example for the remaining season by clutching the 1978 Mid - East conference championship. The Eagles last captured the title in 1975. This championship was the first under the helm of first - year head coach Kirk Park. Coach Park directed his steam to an eight win - one loss season. An early loss to East Dubuque prevented the team from participating in a playoff game for the state crown. he schedule was fraught with ear- ly injuries and inclement weather. Starting quar- terback Dave Buchholtz weathered a shoulder sepa- ration and recovered in time to play in several soggy games. The Lincoln game was slogged in a tor- rential rain on a field glazed with mud. The Bel- levue and Clarence-Lowden games had to be reschedul- ed because of rain and lightning. oach Carstens produced another winning ball club this season. They were undefeated in twenty regular season games and finally fell to Dubuque Wahlert during the third round of district play- offs. The superlative season, 25 wins - l loss, was spear- headed by first team all-con- ference players Cindy Marcucci Lisa Meade, and Nancy Peter- sen.
