The History of ' the High School ORGANIZATION OF THE HIGH SCHOOL. Up to 1911 those students desiring High School education had to provide their own transportation to Atlantic Highlands, Keyport, or Red Bank. In that year a few classes were held in Andrew's Hotel which stood on the highest point in Hillside until it burned down in 1920. This was the first Township High School. THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. In 1911 M. A. Rice, President of the Board of Education at that time, really founded the present school when he gave the Township the site of the building and $1,000 towards its construction. Lewis S. Tompson, also a Board inember, donated the land down the road from the school, which was used for a play- ground and athletic field. John H. Cooke, then edi- tor of the Red Bank Register, gave, until his death, all the athletic equipment. Another member of the Board, Robert Hattshome, gave the frieze represent- ing soldiers of Alexander the Great, replica of the ones now. in the British Museum. He also had chest- nut trim for the auditorium cut from his woods. GREENHOUSE. In 1916 realizing the need of a really practical agricultural course in this agricultur- al community Robert Hartshorne gave the school its original Greenhoilse and M. A. Rice completed it. This was probably the first school greenhouse in the state. The expense of the greenhouse as' it now stands was borne by several residents of the Town- ship. In 1931 a second gteenhOuse was added, giving us the best plant equipment in. agriculture in the State. i MANUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT. The man- ual arts department consisted mainly of the small basement rooms which were originally built for a small gym. In 1927 the instructor, by a full summer of work, doubled the floor space for these activities. This along with new equipment, which was provided for by the Board of Education, paved the way for the introduction of diversified shop work and im- provement in work recognized as the best in the state. In 1931 two basement rooms were added, the east wing for courses in mculding and foundry, met- .31 work, jeweiry, and electrical work and the west wing for mechanical drawing and eventually machine shop training. ' NEW ATHLETIC FIELD. Purchase of a ten- acre field next to the school in 1928 provided a play- ground and athletic field, eliminating the danger of crossing the highway for the physical education class. es. It also paved the way for necessary expansion. OTHER BUILDING CHANGES. In September, 1931, the present gymnasium was completed. In January the physics and chemistry rooms were fitted up with tables and equipment. A full size room was used for a library. The room for the present library gives access direct to the tables in the back of the auditorium which gives us squicient accommodation so that every pupil can do his studying under proper library conditions. . The school record during the past year shows clearly that it is not the quantity, space or equipment, but the quality of the teaching that really makes the school. We have tried to put four years of companion- ship and happy school days into this book and we all sincerely hope that in years to comq, a glance at it will provide many happy memories. Do you remember the eventful September morn in 1943 when we first entered the freshly painted doors of M.T.H.S.? You had a pain. of excitement in the middle of your stomach- that is if your physical make-up was about average; the weak- er of us were numb with fear and panic stricken to an in- describable extent. We were herded into what were called homerooms and we learned eventually that these rooms were exactly what the name implied. Schedules were handed to us with our subjects and their respective room number: written upon them. These schedules were of little value to us since we didnit know where the rooms were. Most of us didnit dare ask any directions of an upper-classman for fear of end- ing up in a more foreign place then we already knew. After several weeks we began to get into the swing of ac- tivities. We had memorized our schedules and could now give directions to a new student-perhaps! We learned many new words which were frequently used by the sophomores and juniorsetwe didn't dare use the word SENIOR yen. One of these words was uLAPS ! What in the name of Saint Juniper were Laps ? Say no more-after skipping ten times around the athletic field, walking around five times and staggering around five more we knew what laps were! Twenty of them! ' We had no sooner become accustomed to these new sur- roundings and gotten out bearings than a Pep-meeting was sprung upon us. After sitting like logs at two or three of these gatherings with upper-classmen looking at us over the tops of their noses, Pepemeetings began to prove themselves enjoy- able and entertaining. We ventured to sing and cheer, even though we didn't know all the words to the songs or the cheers. At our first football game, in early October, we dressed in all the orange and black clothing available with streamers hang- ing from our hats, and seated ourselves in the bleachers. Sud- denly cheers rose from the stands, people were standing, yelling and waving banners, bells were ringing and horns were honk- ing. There, marching down the field was the Middletown High School Band. Smiling faces and twirling batons greeted us at the base of the stands. Our hearts swelled with pride to be part of this outfit. There, in among the upperclassmen, were Jane Staley, Betty Berghout, Garry Collins. and Lynn JelliEe of our class. blowing with all their might on their instruments. ' Then came the highlight of the afternoon! Garbed in their orange and black uniforms, the varsity football team shot across the field to the rhythm of rolling drums and an ex- plosion of cheers! This game was symbolic of the many we at- tended that season. There were several feature attractions which followed foot- ball. We stumbled through dancing classes with much em- barrassment. After all, who wouldnlt feel meek trying to dance with a Senior who knew how? Weeks passed by and basketball became foremost in our thoughtr-actual night games with fellows who sat beside us in Algebra playing I. V. basketball. We who were in the Glee Club began practicing for an operetta which would be staged in the spring. One of our class, Sam Alsback, had a starring role. At the same time Russell Young: was going through his paces with the baseball team. As baseball continued we realized we had not much longer to be called Freshmen. It was wonderful the day school closed for summer vaca- tion. On this day we could truthfully call ourselves Sopho- mores, for we had now completed one year of our four year term. The summer passed quickly and again we entered the cor- ridors which were now so familiar to us. We were sopho- mores and proud of it. It was now our turn to give some mischievous advice to the lowly freshmen-eand don't think we didn't. A Student Council was organized with Pat Berntsen and Helen Boylan among those elected as representatives. Football season saw many of our classmate: on the squad including Grant Williams and our budding star Bill Hem- berger. Midge DeSayda and Gerry Casler were twirlers. Dancing was resumed and was somewhat less frightening. A few of our friends were even instructors. Our basketball team had a good season. We went into track and baseball practice with that 4th place Shore Con- ference victory on our minds, scored by our 1944-45 basket- ball team. In the spring we envied the junior: when they lett for their annual New York trip. We mourned with the seniors twho had by this time begun to speak to usl because a Wash- ington trip could not be arranged due to World War II. For the second time we left M.T.H.S. for the summer. This time with only two years of our four year term to complete. We returned in September as we had done before. This time, as juniors, we began to count the speeding months be- fore graduation. , Instead of the usual eight periods a day, we now had an additional activities period at the end of each day. This pe- riod accommodated our various clubs including the Archery' Club, Chess and Checkers Club, Stenography Speed Club, Ref- erees and Officials Club, Dance Instructors Club and others. Football saw Jake Motley, Bill Hemberger, Johnny Hayes, Charlie Reilly and Andy Scala upholding the fame of M.T.H.S. on the gridiron. Joyce Sheppard and Ann O'Neill were cheerleaders. Gerry Casler was our pretty majorette while Midge DeSayda led a snappy group of twirlers, including Doris Smith, Babe Long, Georgianna Bruntz, Lois Matthews, and Beverly Franklin. Class oEcers were elected as follows: President-Peter Laidlaw Vice-President-George Uhrig Secretary-Evelyn McLennan Treasurer-Doris Smith Our student council undertook the task of presenting chali- HISTORY el programs with more student participation than ever before. As juniors, we were allowed to sell magazine subscriptions. The credit we earned from these sales was applied to our class expenses and our New York trip. This certainly took some of the burden oh Pop! We sold candy also from which was earned considerable credit by several of our super salesmen. Not until measurements for class rings were taken did we fully realize how close we were to this memorable day. At. last came time for our New York trip. We left at 7 A.M. on three chartered buses. We visited the Museum of Art-the Museum of Natural History-the Planetarium-CBS Broadcasting station and most thrilling of all was attendance at one of three stage shows. Our return home early the next morning was all too quickly followed by required attendance at school. The gymnasium looked beautiful after it was decorated for the Prom and the Senior Ball. It seemed a miracle that our barren, workaday, gym could be transformed into such a splen- did ballroom. Needless to say we'll never forget those af- fairs. Our return to school in the autumn of 1946 carried with it an air of self-importance; but after all you'll have to admit we had earned that privilegP-we were now seniors. We had not been back long before we were reminded of the Warr-though it was now over. Returning veterans were resuming their high school education in order that they might qualify for entrance into college. Some of our classmates were no longer with us, but were enrolled in one branch or another of our military service. Hollister Iglay and George Wheeler are serving with the United States Marines, while Robert C. Jones is in the Army. No time was lost in electing Class Officers. This year Richie Smith is our president, Fred Koenig, vice-president, Lynn Jelliffe, secretary, and treasurer once again, Doris Smith. What a triumphant football season! Anthony and Frank Trezza, Kenny Bottino, Ed Rausch, Bill Wymbs and of course the untiring efforts of Donald Goold's educated toe, plus the members of last year's varsity who won for Middletown Town- ship High School first place in the Shore Conference for which a handsome trophy was awarded us. Betty Wilson and Barbara Robinson were two of the pret- ty additions to cor corps of vivacious cheerleaders. Dancing had at last become pleasurable. Many of the Sen- ior class were now instructors. Magazine and candy sales were for a definite purpose this year. Expenses for our anticipated Washington trip spirited our sales which soon reached booming heights. OH!! with what enthusiasm we looked forward to that trip to Washington. The lavish football banquet we enjoyed certainly broved tt us that good work is well rewarded. We had heard so many rumors of how horrible Time sheets and Macbeth were we had feared the day we would ex- perience them. Actually they were not half so bad as we had expected. Mid-year exams came and went but with little enthusiasm from us students or the teachers who had to correct them. All credit for our exquisite Odranoels is due. the competent staff who worked so diligently and faithfully to compile them. The Odranoel staE included Pat Berntsen, Terry Reilly, Joyce Sheppard, Evelyn MacLennon, John Fread, Norma Vail, Betty Berghout, Ramona Wood, Amelia Long, Ruth Heuser, Lois Matthews, Yvonne Whitehead, John Licht, topped 0K by our Super-Editot-in-chief Jean Freibott. Our beautiful Odranoels bring back wonderful memories of our high school friends. Rehearsals for our senior play, 'iLady, Be Good, were be- gun. After several days of exciting tension the cast, which proved to be a worthy one, was announced. Iris Snowden. captured the title feminine role while Tommie McCammon :trutted-his-stulf because of star billing in the male role. Charlie Reilly led the list of high scorers during basket- ball season, although Arnie Isaksen, Jake Motley, Ed O'Brien and Rudolph Pitts also did an honorable job. Baseball and track season were enjoyed by all with sev- eral new participants as well as old. Our senior trip was as delightful as we had anticipated. We felt rather important walking through the government buildings we had read of in our Time magazines and it was equally thrilling to talk to our congressman. After our return from Washington we enjoyed our Easter vacation. Then back to school to prepare for final exams. Realizing that these would be the last exams taken by many of us we tried hard and hoped for the best results. The Senior Ball was even more marvelous, since this year it was ours. Following Clams and the Ball came days of practice for Commencement, having Odranoels autographed; cleaning out lockers and doing the many things necessary when one parts company with a four-year friend. Finally arrived the three events, for which the past four years we have toiled; Baccalaureate, Class Night and Gradua- tion. We have completed four years of work together with much fun and excitement; four years which will be remembered and cherished by us as the most enjoyable years of our lives. While we were in school we may have appeared to be an unappreciative group; but in our hearts there is room re- served for our teachers who have guided us through Leonardo High. Without their planning and cooperation such wonderful trips and extracurricular activities would not be available to students. Our special thanks to our class advisers, Mr. Megill, Mrs. Search, Mr. Gillam, Miss Rouse, Mr. LeFever, and Mrs. Dowd, for their patience and tolerance with us. For the teaching of fair play and good sportsmanship our sincere thanks to Miss Scisco and Mr. Truex. I think each of us as he leaves graduation exercises to- morrow night with his diploma in hand will keep in his heart the desire to fnlllill the educational advantages which have been oEered to us and endeavor to increase these opportunities for those students who follow us.
