Up to 1911 those students desiring High School education had to provide their own transportation to Atlantic Highlands, Keyport, or Red Bank. In that year a few classes were held in Andrew's Hotel which stood on the highest point in Hillside until it burned down in 1920. This was the first Township High School. THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. In 1911 M. A. Rice, President of the Board of Education at that time, really founded the present school when he gave the Township the site of the building and 51,000 towards its construction. Lewis S. Tompson, also a Board member, donated the land down the road from the school which was used for a playground and athletic Held. john H. Cooke, then editor of the Red Bank Register gave, until his death, all the athletic equipment. Another member of the Board, Robert Hartshorne, gave the frieze representing soldiers of Alexander the Great, replica of the ones now in the British Museum. I-Ie also had chestnut trim for the auditorium cut from his woods. GREENHOUSE. In 1916 realizing the need of a really practical agriculture course in this agricultural community, Robert Hartshorne gave the school its original Greenhouse and M. A. Rice completed it. This was probably the first school greenhouse in the state. The expense of the greenhouse as it now stands was borne by several residents of the Township. In 1931 a second greenhouse was added giving us the best plant equipment in agriculture in the state. MANUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT. The manual arts department consisted mainly of the small basement rooms which were originally built for a small gym. In 1927 the instructor, by a full summer of work, doubled the floor space for those activities. This along with new equipment was provided for by the Board of Education, paved the way for the introduction of diversified shop work and improved in work recognized as the best in the state. In 1931 two basement rooms were added, the east wing for courses in moulding and foundry, metal work, jewelry, and electrical work and the West wing foi mechanical drawing and eventually machine shop training. NEW ATHLETIC FIELD. Purchase of a ten-acre field next to the school in 1928 provided a playground and athletic field eliminating the danger of crossing the highway for the physical education classes. It also paved the way for necessary expansion. OTHER BUILDING CHANGES. In September, 1931, the present gymnasium was completed. In January the physics and chemistry rooms were fitted up with tables and equipment. A full size room was used for a library. The door from the present library gives access direct to the table in the back of the auditorium which gives us suflicient accommodations so that every pupil can do his studying under proper library conditions. The school record during the past years shows clearly that it is not the quantity, space or equipment, but the quality of the teaching that really makes the school. ,M Page 4 FoREwoRD I The 1945 Odranoel Staff dedicates this yearbook to the High School teachers, who have done much to make our four years of High School happy and profitable. We, the Senior Class, appreciate their kind interest and loyal help. To the members or' our class who are now in the Armed Service and to those who will soon be leaving for the Service we sincerely hope this years Odranoel will be a source of pleasant recollections. As we go this year, each of us to his field of chosen endeavor, may we carry with us pleasant memories of our school days at Leonardo High. Page 5 H. LAWRENCE SCOTT Pwxidvnl Belford, N. At first the idea of changing classes, and having new teachers and classmates was a little awe inspiring. Then, gradually, the newness began to wear off. No longer did we have to undergo the awful torture of having to ask an upperclassman where rooms 5 or 6 were. We liked the idea of being on our own and being treated as if we were grown-ups. Everything went fine until our first chapel program. We listened to instructions on where to sit and how to act, with shaking knees. We walked into chapel, holding our heads high and acting as if we'd been doing this for simply ages. The Seniors looked at us and giggled. We were mortified. Did we really look as green as we felt? We sat quietly except for a stealthy whisper and a scared giggle now and then. We wondered how the upperclassmen could act so casual and sit comfortably as if this weren't an ordeal to go through. We had the words to the songs but sang half- heartedly, as if we didn't have a right to sing. But finally it was over, and we were relieved. Now we didn't have to worry until the next one. So much was going on in school that we didn't realize how time was flying. We noticed squads of boys in the field. There was the smell of chrysanthemums and pigskin in the air. The football season! We bought school pins like mad and waited breathlessl for the first game. Our first pep meeting will always be one of the more Y wonderful memories of our years in high school. We didn't know the cheers as well ' h f h as the rest but we shouted and stamped just the same. We had our first touc o ero worship for the boys on the team. And the cheerleaders were just out of our reach. But gosh, there was Marie Lauer on the cheering squad, and she was a freshman. Our first feeling of class pride! Suddenly one of the cheerleaders shouted, How about some competition? Immediately such a clamoring and shouting went up that we thought this competition must be something good. And it was! Each class, one after the other, shouted the cheer. The class who shouted loudest won the competition. We were the first to try, and after it seemed to us, a pitiful attempt, the other classes tried. The upperclassmen really went at it with a vengeance. Finally a decision was reached. Ghosts of deceased freshmen! The freshmen won the competition! We began to feel as if we belonged. We even pushed a little as we left chapel and for once looked at the Seniors without awe. The weeks passed and we began to hear some news. It didn't sound too good. When we heard what it was, we sort of wished we were back in the eighth grade. Dancing classes were starting! Oh, horrors! We freshmen hadn't even walked across a dance floor much less danced on one. Finally, the dreaded day came. Strains of music floated up from the gym, and after each class weary little people emerged from the gym doors-tired out! A certain routine was followed in these classes, with boys lining up on one side and girls on the other. The instructors explained and illustrated the stelps. Then, oh goodness, we had to dance with partners. We tried so hard, but we su denly realized we'd been harboring two left feet all these years. But at last the bell rang and we limped off to our next class. The first time is always the hardest we realized. Because we actually came to like the dancing classes. Suddenly, we were coming to school without coats, for it was june. We envied the Seniors. They had so much going on. Proms, plays, Senior Trips, and graduation. Finally, on the last day, we' said goodbye a hundred times and took our last ride on the school bus as freshmen. September again, but school held no fears for us now. Why, it was old stuff! Chapel was fun and our class sang our school songs at the top of our lungs. Our biology class had a field trip. just imagine whole hours of walking in the woods and spying on Mother Nature. We went to a few school dances, and felt just a little light-headed when the Senior boys and girls danced with us. It was football season again. Dick Cooke, one of our class, made the Varsity. We came out first in the Shore Conference, and we knew there just wasn't any school like Leonardo. When our baseball team came out first in the Shore Conference that same sophomore year our school pride hit the sky. Strains of graduation music floated through the june air. Excited Seniors tried on caps and gowns. We left school once again for a summer vacation. Things were going too fast for us. Summer was over and we were back in school. The unbelievable part was that we were juniors! We were on friendly terms with the teachers. The Seniors were just part of the gang. ,And we much preferred to stay around the office than to stay in study hall. We had our fun snickering at the new Freshmen. We insisted that some of them were still children. During November we discovered that finally we were big league! We held class elections! Oh, it felt good to know that our class really mattered. We elected HISTORY Tom Finnegan as President, Jack Kay as Vice-President, Mary Lou Vernalia as Secretary and Tom Craig as Treasurer. Football uniforms were being issued again. Signals were shouted in the crisp air. Bob Calt, Bob Greene, Dick Wackar, Dick Cooke, Tom Craig, Ed Keyes, and jim O'Shaughnessy all made first string. We really loved everything. The fun at the pep meetings, the excitement at the games. Why, we were even on friendly terms with some of the football heroes. The last week in May came with a rush. It was prom time. The decorating committee did wonders with ladders, crepe paper and tacks. The gym was in formal dress, too. At last the night of the prom! We realized we had never really lived until this moment. It was all so dreamy. The girls looked heavenly in long, shimmery dresses. And the boys could have stepped into a Prince Charming role with no trouble. Then it was over, and just another wonderful memory. Summer passed in a breathlessly short time. Back to school, just bursting with pride. At last the goal toward which we'd all been striving-the proud privilege of eing a Senior. We were it, there was no question about it. Freshmen looked up to us, and we loved it. We had the choicest seats in chapel, got up a petition on the slightest pretext and were on good terms with everybody. We helped start a newspaper, the Odranoel staff was picked and got under way. There was talk about a Student Council. Some of us were picked to be on committees to further this new idea. Then we were dusting off school songs and cheers again. The football heroes this year are boys we've gone to school with for four years. Weren't we proud! We had one defeat, with the heartbreaking score of 20-19 in Toms River's favor. We carne out second in the Shore Conference and third in the Central jersey Championship. We had a successful basketball season with a score of fourteen wins out of eighteen games. We won a trophy and come out fourth in the Shore Conference. We elected our class oflicers. Dick Wackar was voted in as President, jack Kay as Vice-President, Doris Gordon as Secretary, and Ethel Calciana as Treasurer. Finally, the words Senior Play were in the mouths of everyone. A group of Seniors tried for parts. Rehearsals got under way and finally the performances. The play, Dear Daffodil, was a success! We heaved a sigh of relief! Well, one thing was sure, they wouldn't forget this Senior Class in a hurry. With the help of the faculty we planned our trip which occurred in May, a visit to New York. We saw the Planetarium, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Empire State Observatory, a radio program, and the musical comedy, Oklahoma We had a wonderful time. Time for the Senior Ball arrived! We decorated like mad and the gym really looked the way a dance floor should. The stag lines this year were frequented by girls as well as boys, for war has taken its toll among our fellows,,too. Class night arrives, and during the fun and folliness of it we thought of another night that would be coming soon. Graduation! We looked around at our friends for we'd be parting soon. Friends with whom we'd shared laughter, tears, and even lunches. Oh, it has been wonderful. We sing the school songs and sound a little fuzzy. Must have a cold--that lump in our throats! We look around at our teachers in the audience and thank them silently for being really such good friends to us. We thank Mrs. Search and Mr. Davidheiser for guiding us through the years. Mr. Truex gets a vote of thanks for giving us teams that we can be proud of, for teaching our boys cooperation and strengthening their bodies and their characters. We look around at the boys we've gone to school with fondly, and think of the boys who should be here. Boys who missed out on some of their school days. They're wearing uniforms now, instead of bow ties, slacks, and saddle shoes. Robert Boylan, Bob Calt, Dick Cooke, Bob Findlay, Ed Grady, Bob Greene, Bill Isaksen, Gene McBride, Russel Mount, Joe Mulligan, Tom Nill, Ed Rudden and Harry Sachs. Not many, but enough to leave a gap in our class- rooms and in our hearts. We've missed them, missed sharing our fun, our troubles with them. They have a right to be in on it, too. They're learning war now so we can learn how to make peace. One boy, Vernon Papa, of our class gave his life in the Philippines so that classes like ours could keep on graduating-so that we'd always be able to learn what we wanted to. It has been a good four years. There have been times when we thought we'd die rather than give an oral talk in English class. Times when Algebra room spelled doom in capital letters for us. Sure,.there have been worries! But it was fun. Even the troubles were fun. Four years' worth of laughs-four years' worth of rich and wonderful memorips forever kept in our hearts.
