Up to 1911 those students desiring High School education had to provide their own transportation to Atlantic Highlands, Keyport, or Red Bank. ln that year a few classes were held in Andrew's Hotel which stood on the highest point in Hillside until it burned down in 1920. This was the first Township High School. THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. ln 1911 M. A. Rice, President of the Board of Education at that time, really founded the present school when he gave the Township the site of the building and 51,000 towards its construction. Lewis S. Tompson, also a Board member, donated the land down the road from the school which was used for a playground and athletic field. john H. Cooke, then editor of the Red Bank Register gave, until his death, all the athletic equipment. Another member of the Board, Robert Hartshorne gave the frieze representing soldiers of Alexander the Great, replica of the ones now in the British Museum. He also had chestnut trim for the auditorium cut from his woods. GREENHOUSE. In 1916 realizing the need of a really practical agriculture course in this agricultural community, Robert Hartshorne gave the school its original Greenhouse and M. A. Rice completed it. This was probably the first school greenhouse in the state, The expense of the greenhouse as it now stands was borne by several residents of the Township. ln 1931 a second greenhouse was added giving us the best plant equipment in agriculture in the state. MANUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT. The manual arts department consisted mainly of the basement rooms which were originally built for a small gym. In 1927 the instructor small , by a full summer of work, doubled the floor space for those activities. This along with new equip- ment, which was provided for by the Board of Education, paved the way for the introduction of diversified shop work and improved in work recognized as the best in the state. ln 1931 two basement rooms were added, the east wing for courses in moulding and foundry, metal work, jewelry, and electrical work and the west wing for mechanical drawing and eventually machine shop training. NEW ATHLETIC FIELD, Purchase of a ten-acre field next to the school in 1928 provided a playground and athletic field eliminating the danger of crossing the highway for the physical education classes. lt also paved the way for necessary expansion. OTHER BUILDING CHANGES. ln September, 1931, the present gymnasium was completed. In lanuary the physics and chemistry rooms were fitted up with tables and equipment. A full size room was used for a library. The door from the present library gives access direct to the tables in the back of the auditorium which gives us sufficient accommodations so that every pupil can do his studying under proper library conditions. The school record during the past years shows clearly that it is not the quantity, space or equipment, but the quality of the teaching that really makes the school. FGREWORD The Odranoel Staff of i944 dedicates this yearbook to the Senior Class. May it always bring to mind pleasant memories of the happy years we all enjoyed at Middletown Township High School. To our classmates, now in the services of our country, we sincerely hope this modest publication brings a little earned happiness. We are very proud of you. RAYMOND WP . ,,,741,a,i ,,,, 0 N RED EW-To MART , IRE PETER HINES 'N MCCU Plcture not available: ROBERT WILKINS 035 360 CLASS PROPH ECY SELMA WALTERS The day was gray and dreary with time passing, oh, so slowly as I sat in study hall trying to concentrate on P.A.D. l gazed out of the window, then back at the book and then hopelessly at the clock, thinking, This period will never end! As I stared at the clock its face grew fuzzy and indistinct. The hands appeared to be whirling speedily about. Suddenly the mist cleared away but, in place of the clock as it had been, was a modern- istically designed affair, showing the hour, day, month and year. I blinked in surprise. Turning to my neighbor to remark this strange occurrence, I realized that the study hall had changed. The boys and girls, had become adults, moving about the streets of a strange but very beautiful city. Tall, stately buildings reared toward the heavens. Heli- copters landed and took off constantly from their roofs. Automobiles of transparent plastic, thronged the streets. A huge lighted billboard attracted my gaze. What do you think was shown on that lighted billboard? That's right! The name and accomplishments of each member of this Class of I944. And the date on the billboard was l954. Everything seemed to vanish and instead of all the strange things I had seen, l found myself back in the same old familiar study hall with the same familiar people gathering up their books to go to their next classes. Why I must have been day dream- ing all this time! As I glanced up at the clock, it had resumed its normal shape. My dream was over. 037 VD V1 LIJ VI 380 0 Q- eu IL 0 ff. A large percentage of these boys and girls had already selected their future enterprises in life, such as Law, Chemistry, Agriculture, lour- nalism, Music, Bookkeeping and Stenography. ln addition to these fields, which the school provided for us, we, as freshmen, were permitted to participate in intramural athletic activities along with ping-pong tournaments. A few of our talented students became members of our high school band. Several girls joined the cheerleading squad and a few of the boys were selected for the Glee Club. As our courses were arranged, and the school was to be our home for the next four years, we realized the value of higher education. Since we know that high school work was more difficult than that of elementary school, we paid strict attention to what the faculty had to say. OUR SOPHOMORE YEAR ln our Sophomore year, the second step toward our goal, we proceeded with considerably more confidence in ourselves. Those students who had selected Biology as one course in their education, were provided with a field trip for its careful and extremely rigid study, that they might obtain a lasting knowledge of plant life. A Spanish Club tour was arranged for those students who had selected the Spanish language in their course, for which all of these pupils were grateful. Many of the boys in our class turned out excellent shop work which they could proudly advertise, while a consider- able number of the girls were performing well in Home Economics. Since this was the first year in which our class was eligible to participate in Varsity athletics, we used all of the physical powers with which we were blessed, for representation in football, basketball and baseball. Our purpose in this achievement was to make Middletown Township High School as proud of us, as we are proud of her. OUR IUNIOR YEAR This year was considerably more strenuous than the past two years put together. Great changes were made in class programs. More subjects were added and schedules were increased so that our educational program became adjusted to the war effort. Many of our students, in preparing to enter the armed forces, adopted such new courses as Special Aviation Mathematics, Radio Code, and a course in Seamanship. Now we had the pleasure of electing class officers. We chose Robert Gray as president, lack Kaney, vice-president, Fred Foerster, treasurer, and Barbara Reed, secretary. Many trips and enjoyments were abolished because of gas rationing and other war conditions but we took this in stride since the cause of our country comes first. We had the misfortune of losing our beloved classmate, Donald Morin, whose death left us all sorrowful. Our Tea Dance was held with great success in the high school gym- nasium although it did cause a few flat feet by the excess walking to and from. Some of the students were presented with pins for excellency and speed in typing. Our baseball team won both the Central jersey and Shore Conference Championship titles while our football team strolled off with the Shore Conference title. For these honors we are very thankful to our coaching staff for their superior instruction. OUR SENIOR YEAR Our junior Year slipped by fast and at last we were Seniors. Again we elected our class officers. This time Edward Fink was chosen president, Rudolph Quackenbush, vice-president, Barbara Reed, secretary, and Henry Schimmel, treasurer. Immediately we began to sell candy and magazines in order to pay for our class dues and increase our assets. On March I6, l'-944, one of the Physics Classes enjoyed a trip to Philadelphia and had the privilege of going through the Franklin Institute of Science. Those students who went are indeed grateful for the scientific knowledge that they obtained while visiting the large building. For the first time in two years a Senior Play was presented on March 24, l944. We are proud to say that its great success was due to the hard work of the cast and the undivided attention Mr. Lefever gave to the direction of the play. Everyone who attended, enjoyed both the junior Prom presented in May and the Senior Ball held in june. At the start of the year we numbered seventy-six fewer students than last year. Many left us to serve in the armed forces while others obtained defense jobs. We are left with the same feeling of loss as though one of the family were gone when such boys as Robert Cray, jack Kaney, Raymond Kemp, William Kryscinski, joseph McCarthy, Martin McGuire, Calvin Meyer, james Gooch, and Vincent Moran walk off to their new assignments in the armed forces. Moreover, we, who are now l8 or soon will be, expect to join them and do with them what our country asks of us. As we reached the climax of our four years in high school preparations were made for Commencement exercises. Carol Ralph, Bernice Connolly, Nancy Nixon, and Edward Fink were chosen as speakers for that occasion. Selma Walters was selected to write and read the Class Prophecy while Henry Schimmel was made author of our Class History. We all hope and trust that we may continue to obtain more education. We, the graduating class of l944, wholeheartedly wish that future classes equal our good fortune in obtaining an education under so friendly a person- nel as the faculty of our Middletown Township High School. Sufficient words and time to properly express our thanks to the faculty and our parents are not available. 04-I 53 420 SENI Alsbach, Catherine .,.... Anthopulos, Chris .....
