Up to 1911 those students desiring High School education had to provide their own transportation to Atlantic Highlands, Keyport, or Red Bank. In that year a few classes were held in Andrew's Hotel which stood on the highest point in Hillside until it burned down in 1920. This was the first Township High School. THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. In 1911 M. A. Rice, President of the Board of Education at that time, really founded the present school when he gave the Township the site of the building and 51,000 towards its construction. Lewis S. Thompson, also a Board member donated the land down the road from the school which was used for a playground and athletic field. John H. Cooke, then editor of the Red Bank Register gave, until his death, all the athletic equipment. Another member of the Board, Robert Hartshorne, gave the frieze representing soldiers of Alexander the Great, replica of the ones now in the British Museum. He also had chestnut trim for the auditorium cut from his woods. GREENHOUSE. In 1916 realizing the need of a really practical agricultural course in this agricultural community, Robert Hartshorne gave the school its original greenhouse and M. A. Rice completed it. This was probably the hrst school greenhouse in the state. The expense of the greenhouse as it now stands was borne by several residents of the Township. In 1931 a second greenhouse was added giving us the best plant equipment in agriculture in the state. MANUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT. The manual arts department consisted mainly of the small basement rooms which were originally built for a small gym. In 1927 the instructor, by a full summer of work doubled the floor space for these activities. This, along with new equipment which was provided for by the Board of Education, paved the way for the introduction of diversiiaed shop work and improvement in work recognized as the best in the state. In 1931 two basement rooms were added, the east wing for Courses in moulding and foundry, metal work, jewelry, and electrical work and the west wing for mechanical drawing and eventually machine shop training. NEW ATHLETIC FIELD. Purchase of a ten-acre held next to the school in 1928 provided a playground and athletic Held eliminating the danger of crossing the highway for the physical education classes. It also paved the way for necessary expansion. OTHER BUILDING CHANGES. In September, l931, the present gymnasium was completed. In January the physics and chemistry rooms were Htted up with tables and equipment. A full sized room was used for a library. The door from the present library gives access direct to the tables in the back of the audi- torium which gives us suflicient accommodations so that almost every pupil can do his studying under proper library conditions. The school record during the past years shows clearly that it is not the quantity, space or equipment, but the quality of the teaching that really makes the school. H. Page 38 CLASS PROPHECY Dorothy Kelly It was, curiosity more than anything else that prompted me to pick up the comic book that lay on the table. As I turned the pages the name Superman struck my eye. I began to read the story and learned that Superman was a mythical character who possessed such strength and power that nothing was impossible for him to do. His exploits fascinated me. He could clear tall buildings with a single leap, stop hurtling meteors, fight huge monsters and accomplish other seemingly impossible feats. I was completely absorbed in the tale when suddenly there was a burst of flame and smoke followed by a deafening roar of thunder. When the smoke cleared there stood Superman His voice was so calm that as he spoke my bewilderment and con- fusion faoed. I asked him if these accounts of his adventures were true, if he really could do such marvelous things. To prove his power Superman proposed a trip into the future. Delighted at the opportunity to explore the unknown, I accepted. He took my handg in a flash we were whisked away. The air swirled around me, my ears were filled with howling winds and my thoughts smothered for the moment. Then all this ceased as suddenly as it had begun and I found myself in a strange new world. A world of glass cities and super highways, of plastic airplanes and amphibious cars. A truly amazing world-the world of the future. My hrst wish was to visit my classmates and learn what the future had held for them. Superman granted that wish and we started on a tour stopping to visit each one. Hofmire THE FRESHMAN YEAR On September 11, 1939, a date that seems to be only yesterday, a group of about two hundred Grammar School Graduates, entered Leonardo High School. We repre- sented the new class of Freshmen. As we rode to school from the various parts of the township, on the fleet of school buses, we still felt as we had when we were graduated, that we had achieved a great goal in completing the first eight years of our education. But as we left our buses and entered this large brick building, We began to realize how far from the top of the ladder we were situated, and how much more knowledge we had yet to acquire. We had fallen from brilliant eighth graders, to lowly freshmen. We were beginning the second, and in some cases the final step, in formal education. After a short time we were assigned homerooms and course schedules, and in a few months became more fully acquainted with our new school, and also with many of the teachers. We were offered a year of work and consequently a year of learning. Those who were wise, took advantage of this opportunity. THE SOPHOMORE YEAR In our Sophomore Year we seemed to be just a slight bit higher on our previously mentioned ladder. We were still lower classmen, but not quite so low. Those who ,were taking technical, as well as academic courses, were offered more recreation. There were Biology field trips, on which we came in direct contact with nature. There were two New York trips for the Biology classes. There was a Spanish Club trip, and the College Prep. English class went to New York and saw Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. This was the first year that the boys of our class were represented on the varsity athletic teams, although we were members of the intramural teams, for both our first and second year. In football we were the Central Jersey and the Shore Conference champions, and in baseball we attained second place in the Shore Conference. THE JUNIOR YEAR As juniors we began to feel much more important, and more respected. As has been the custom for many years, we elected class ofiicers. Douglas Foulks was elected president, Franklin Ruck, vice-president, june Truex treasurer, and William Bonnette secretary. As the year progressed, we began to look forward to our spring activities. We sold candy in order to increase our class assets. In April we went on a trip to New York, but because of a rubber shortage due to the war, the buses which took us to New York were not allowed to transport us through the city. As a result we were forced to seek transportation in local buses and subways. First a sight seeing bus took us on a tour siuurs-gm gl, A , Q Punto chips , Not Playing ho0kgy7 m of the city, then we saw a movie in Radio City, and a stage show by the Rockettes. We had dinner at the Park Central Hotel and then later saw a performance by Fred Waring, his orchestra and choir. I'm sure everyone enjoyed the trip immensely. Later on in May we decorated the school gym, and transformed it into a dance hall, in which we held our Prom and the Seniors their Ball. Our football team won third place in the Shore Conference THE SENIOR YEAR At last, the final step in our high school education was reached. For any future knowledge that we may desire, we shall have to pay for ourselves, with a minimum of state or local aid. At the year's beginning, our biggest disappointment was in learning that we could not make the customary Washington Trip. Since our country was engaged in a second wcrld struggle with certain dictatorial powers, Washington was very much overcrowded, and we could not get accommodations. However, we did have our Senior Ball, and had our graduation exercises in the usual manner. Our class officers for this final year were Franklin Ruck, president, Charles Nixon, vice-president, June Truex, treasurer, and Helen Freibott, secretary. In the latter part of April the faculty chose a group of students, who were to participate in our graduation exercises. Signe Olving, Franklin Ruck, William Glen- dinning and Robert Wood were chosen as commencement speakers. June Abt, Donald Coddington, Robert Farley, Douglas Foulks, Helen Freibott, Lester Goodman, Margaret Guttcrmsen, Audrey McMahon, Charles Nixon, Catherine Salmon, June Truex, Ralph Van Pelt, Betty Walker, and Allen West were chosen to distribute gifts at class night. Dorothy Kelly was chosen to write and read the class prophecy, while George Hoffmire was chosen as author of this history. The situation, however, was not as anticipated, for just about two weeks before the time set for these events which I have briefly outlined, the Office of Price Admin- istration put a pleasure ban on the operation of motor vehicles. This meant that no pleasure cars were allowed to ride, unless they were doing so for essential reasons. We therefore altered our plans in order to comply with this regulation. Our Class Night activities were held on the afternoon of June the fourth. Immediately following was the Junior Prom, held in the afternoon. At the con- clusion of these events, in the early evening, we were taken home on the school buses, using no more gasoline than would ordinarily be used by the after school buses. Our Baccalaureate Service was held on the following Sunday, june the sixth. Our Commence- ment Exercises took place on the evening of june the ninth, after which our Senior Prom was held. This event and the Baccalaureate Service were the only events to which we were permitted to go in private cars. The only restriction was that each car had to be occupied by at least one senior to and from the school. In concluding this brief account of the history of our class, I shall express my feelings as well as those of my fellow classmates, when I say that I have fully enjoyed my high school life, and wish to thank all those responsible for the opportunity that has been presented to me, through this Educational Institution. Almost one hundred students and six chaperons, including Miss Mary Rouse, Miss Doris Hurst, Mrs.. Esther Search, Dr. Wylie Pate, Mr. James McConnell, and Mr. Kenneth Meinert left Five Corners, Middletown, in three buses. Upon our arrival in New York City, we wereshown to another group of buses, this time to go on a sight-seeing tour of Manhattan. Because of condirions due to the war, it was impossible for us to continue in the original buses, thus making necessary the change so that we could tour the town. From the bus terminal, we rode downtown to the Battery, passing on our way, the Hudson River docks. We were the Hrst class not to see the Aquarium as it was being torn down. However, we were permitted to leave the buses at this point to stretch and walk around a bit. Our guides told us to leave our cameras in the buses because if any pictures were taken we would have to wait there until they had been developed. After boarding our buses, we left the Battery, and passed on our way uptown to the Fulton Fish Market and Chinatown. Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt's apartment was pointed out to us as we passed it. At this point, we left our buses to enter the Cathedral where we gazed at its architecture and church-like beauty. We again boarded our buses and rode over to Grant's Tomb from which point we rode up Riverside Drive to the Automat where we enjoyed lunch. After this we walked to the Hayden Planetarium to see an interesting demonstration. Because of wartime conditions, We went by subway to the RCA Observatory Tower where the Junior Class pictures were taken. From the Tower, we were shown many of the Well-known sights of Manhattan. We left the RCA Observatory Tower and Walked to the Radio City Music Hall. Here we saw the Rockettes, followed by Reap the Wild Wind, a very exciting motion picture. We left the Radio City Music Hall to walk to the Park Central Hotel where we had a chance to rest before dinner, After dinner, we walked along the Gay White Way to the Fred Waring broad- cast. During the entertainment after the program, Mr. Waring announced over the microphone our presence there. Leaving the broadcast, we walked back to our buses which took us home, tired but still excited and happy. The trip had measured up to all our expectations. wi' MW: ,N ll ,na gs. 2, Page 48 SE Abraham, June ..... Abt, June ,...........,..,., Ackerman, George ...... Alston, Ollye .......,...
