SCHUYLER SICKLES FRANK S. WADSWORTH Navesink, N. 1. Leonardo, N. I. MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL ORGANIZATION OF THE HIGH SCHOOL. Up to l9lI, those desiring high school education had to walk to Atlantic Highlands, Red Bank or Keyport. In that year the begin- nings of a township high school were made when a few classes were held in Andrew's Hotel, oldest hotel in the region, which stood on the highest point in Hillside until it burned down in I920. THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. In I9II, M.A. Rice, President of the Board of Educa- tion at that time, really founded the present school when he gave the Township the site of the building and one thousand dollars toward its construction. Lewis S. Thompson, also a member of the Board, donated the land down the road from the school formerly used as a playground and athletic field, and john H. Cook, until his death, editor of the Red Bank Register, gave playground equipment. Another member of the Board, Robert Hartshorne, gave the frieze representing soldiers of Alexander the Great, replica of the one now in the British Museum, and had the chestnut trim for the auditorium cut from his woods. GREENHOUSE. In l9I6, realizing the need in this agricultural community for a truly practical agricultural course, Robert Hartshorne gave the school its original greenhouse, and M. A. Rice completed it. This was probably the first school greenhouse in the State. When brought to Leonardo it was practically rebuilt. The expense of the greenhouse as it stands today was borne by several residents of the Township. In March, I93I, a second greenhouse was built, giving us the best plant equipment in agriculture in the State. MANUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT. For many years the basement rooms, originally designed as a small gymnasium, has housed a manual art department. By a full summer of work in I927, the instructor doubled the floor space for these activities. This, along with new equip- ment, provided by the Board of Education, paved the way for the introduction of diversified shop work and for still further improvement in work recognized, as among the best in the State. In I93l, the two basement rooms were added, the east room for courses in moulding and foundry, metal work, jewelry, electrical work, and the west wing for mechanical drawing and eventually machine shop training. NEW ATHLETIC FIELD. Purchase of the ten-acre field next to the school in I928 provided a playground and athletic field, eliminating the dangerous crossing of the highway for physical education and paved the way for necessary expansion. OTHER BUILDING CHANGES. September, I93I, the present gymnasium was com- pleted. In january, l932, the physics and chemistry rooms were fitted up with tables and equipment and a full-sized room was used for the library. The door from the present library giving access direct to the tables in the back of the auditorium gives us sufficient accommoda- tions so that practically every pupil in study hall can do his studying under library conditions. The school's record during these years presents adequate proof that it is the quality of the teaching and not the quantity of space or equipment that really makes the school. We left Red Bank Station at 6:30 A.M., accompanied by Dr. Pate, and our faculty advisers Mrs. Search, Miss Pennington, Miss McCracken, Mr. Tingley, and Mr. Davidheiser. We went across the Delaware River on the Newcastle Ferry, passed through Elkton and Aberdeen, Maryland, on our way to Baltimore, where we had lunch at the Southern Hotel. After lunch we climbed into the buses and traveled to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Here we were given an hour to see the beautiful buildings and grounds, after which we left for Washington. Upon arrival our picture was taken on the Capitol Grounds. We were then taken on a sight-seeing tour through the city which included an hour's inspection of Rock Creek Zoological Gardens. Later, we went to the Hotel Ebbitt, found our assigned rooms, and ate our dinner. After dinner we went to the Library of Congress. Afterwards we went to a theater, where we saw The Lady from Cheyenne. From there we walked to our rooms, and were glad to go to bed. We arose early Tuesday morning and ate breakfast at the hotel. We were taken to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, where we were shown the making of bonds, stamps, and money. After leaving the Bureau we walked to the Washington Monument. All of us took the elevator to the top of the monument, as the steps were under repair. We observed the city from the top and then left for the White House. We saw the famous East Room, where formal affairs are held, and some of the other state rooms. Then we returned to the hotel for lunch Upon finishing lunch we visited the Senate and House of Representa- tives. We were surprised to see the few Senators present, and the confusion in the House was a shock. After leaving the Capitol, we went to the Smith- sonian Institute and the New and Old National Museums. We spent two enjoyable hours looking at the many exhibits. Arlington, Virginia was our next stop where we saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We marveled at the simple beauty of the stone resting place of a simple private. After dinner at the hotel, we went to the Lincoln Memorial, which presented a very impressive sight at night. After seeing the Memorial we 053 540 went to the theater where we saw and heard Affectionately Yours, and Charley Spivak's orchestra. On our last day we were awakened early, ate breakfast, and left Wash- ington for Mount Vernon. We spent an enjoyable time at Mount Vernon, seeing the home of the Father of our Country. After returning to Wash, ington, we were conducted through the F.B.l. Building, being shown the fingerprint system, and mementoes of solved cases and captured criminals. Then we returned to the hotel for lunch, and to pack our bags. We said goodbye to Washington after an enjoyable, but all too short, stay. On our way home we stopped at a Franciscan Monastery, and were shown a replica of the Catacombs at Rome. We ate dinner at the Darling Hotel in Wilmington, Delaware, and arrived home about twelve o'clock. V962 THE 1940 NEW YORK TRIP The thirteenth Annual junior New York Trip was made on May 14, 1940. At six forty-five A.M. three buses loaded with 100 students and six chaperons left Keyport Five Corners. The first stop we made was at the General Motors Assembly Plant at Linden, where we saw Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile cars being assembled. From there we traveled over the Pulaski Skyway and through the Holland Tunnel to New York City. We rode to the Aquarium in Battery Park via First Avenue, passing the market and shipping center. The Aquarium contains the largest collection of ocean and fresh water species in America. The most interesting exhibit is a five foot ten inch electric eel which lights a Neon light. The walls of this building, which once was a fort, are nine feet thick. We boarded the bus the second time and went on a sight seeing trip through Chinatown, Mott, Pell, and Doyer Street where we were impressed by the narrow dirty streets. Turning into Wall Street we saw the New York Stock Exchange where ninety billion dollars changes hands through the verbal contract of its eleven hundred members. We passed the United States Sub- treasury Building, site of the first United States Capitol and l. P. Morgan Building, only a hundred feet high but the most costly business building in the world. After such an interesting sight seeing trip we went up Fifth Avenue to l 10th Street, where we visited the Cathedral of St. john Divine the largest Cathedral on the North and South American continents. From there we went to a Horn and Hardart Automat where we had our lunch. After lunch, we went down Fifth Avenue to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where a picture of the students and chaperons was taken. We then walked around to see the beautiful paintings and Statues. We returned to the buses once more and rode to the Planetarium where we heard a talk on the Solar System. Our next exciting place was the Empire State Building where we took an elevator to one hundred second floor. lts tower, 1250 feet above street level, can accommodate one hundred people. The Empire State Building has a regular sway of four inches out of perpendicular, eight and one half times each minute. The Empire State Building is the highest office building in the world and only building planned or under construction to surpass it is the Palace of the Soviets in Moscow. The groups boarded the buses once more, and rode to 46th Street and Broadway where we had our dinner at ChiId's Restaurant. After dinner we went to Museum of Science and lndustry. Here we saw many Antiques and one of Lindbergh's planes. We also heard a speech on the First Transparent Woman. From here we went to the R.C.A. Building where we saw and heard a Phillip Morris broadcast. After the broadcast some went to see Ladies in Retirement and were accompanied by Miss Frank, Miss Pennington, Mr. Megill and Dr. Pate. Still another group went to see Two for the Show and were accompanied by Mr. Tingley, and Mr. Meinert. ln making our trip a success we thank Miss Frank, Miss Pennington, Mr. Tingley, Mr. Meinert, Mr. Megill and Dr. Pate. After an exciting, pleasant and interesting trip we returned home. We will look upon this trip as a pleasant memory of our school days. 055 560 Abt, Murray ........... CLASS HISTORY In September, l937, we of the class of '4l entered the doors of the Middletown Township Sanctuary for Grammar School Alumni, known as Middletown Township High School. As timid freshman we were glad to learn that the upperclassmen had declared a closed season on all recruits and rookies. We were given a chance to join some of the many clubs and par- ticipate in some of the varied activities of our new alma mater. After a few weeks we were all amazed to find that we could find our way about the school without a map. After safely passing the first lap of the long and hard road to graduation, we entered our sophomore homerooms, ready for more mischief and less homework. We elected as officers joseph Bolger, President: Harold Quack- enbush, Vice-President, Karl Helwig, Secretary: and Dorothy jackson, Treas- urer. Being of an ambitious nature, we held a Sophomore Dance in the spring of '39, starting to enlarge our class finances early. Having completed the second lap of our secondary education unharmed, we found ourselves in the rooms we would call homefor two Years. The first business on the calendar was the election of officers. Installed were joseph Bolger, President, William Farley, Vice-President, Dorothy jackson, Secretary, and Harold Quackenbush, Treasurer. The class started selling candy and magazines to pay for the New York Trip. Later in the year, because of the press of schoolwork and athletics, joe resigned, and Bill Farley took his place. Patricia Conover was elected to fill the vacancy thus created. After almost three years of planning and hoping, on May l4, l94O, the annual New York Trip took place. From 6 A.M. to I2 P.M. we were con- stantly on the move, seeing the Aquarium, Empire State Building, Cathedral of St, john the Divine, Radio City, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hayden Planetarium, and in the evening either Two for the Show or Ladies in Retirement. Altogether, the trip was an impressive and thoroughly enjoy- able experience which will never be forgotten. Almost before we knew it, the junior Prom had come, giving us a chance to strut our new clothes and have a good time doing it. Finally, back in harness after our usual vacation, we found ourselves in the homestretch. Again we held our election. After the smoke had cleared and the votes had been counted we learned that Karl Helwig was President: Edward Feakes, Vice-President, Patricia Conover, Secretary, and Dorothy jackson, Treasurer. The football team of '40, Central jersey Group ll Champions, contained nine boys of the Class of '4l on the first eleven, led by Captain joe Bolger. The class produced two senior plays to fill the coffers soon to be depleted by the Washington Trip. The first, in the fall of '40, was called The Actors Have Come. The second made its bow in April, '4l, and was entitled The Spider and the Fly. Suddenly the Washington Trip loomed ahead, the climax of four years of high school. The mysteries of Mount Vernon, Annapolis, Congress, and other outstanding attractions of the nation's capital were shown to us. Upon arrival home, we felt glad to see familiar surroundings and people, but dis- appointed at leaving such a new and interesting city. Then came Class Night, the reading of the Class Prophecy, by Sarah Ann Gould, and the presentation of class gifts by Robert Campbell, jean Ahern, Larry McGough, Harriet Long, William Farley, Ann Salmon, Edward Feakes, june Maier, Macy Goodinsky, Alice lsaksen, Thomas Gedettis, Eleanor Merken, Harold Quackenbush, and Claire Hillyer. Even with the rapid-fire sequence of events, the best remembered occurrence of them all was Graduation, spelled with a capital Karl Helwig, Harry Huber, Charles Debele, Ray Goclon, Frank Brouwer, Clifford Connett, james Swackhamer, Donald Wyman, Lucille Donnelly, Barbara Hamilton, Sarah Ann Gould, Vivian jessen, Regina Connolly, Doris War- burton, Mabel O'Neal, Doris Dorn, and jane Christian took part in the musical exercises. After speeches,by Patricia Conover, Dorothy jackson, Karl Helwig, and james Swackhamer, the diplomas were presented. lt was easy to see the looks of surprise on many of the faces of the graduates. The shock of actually leaving their old haven was almost too much for them. Looking back over the years, we of the Class of '4l sincerely hope that someday we will be able to repay society for the educational opportunities they have given us. 083 844 Lucille Donnelly is a famous opera singer. CLASS PROPHECY It was june 3, 1941. I hurried along the street, for I was already late for my appointment with my friend, Professor Ticktock, that famous scientist and chemist. As I opened the door to his laboratory, he called out, Eurekal I have done it: I have done it! I closed the door with a click which attracted his attention. At first, he scowled at having been interrupted by a stranger, but as I advanced toward him, his face lit up in recognition. l'm so happy to see you, he said, I must tell you the wonderful news. At last I have made the invention which I have been looking forward to all my life-a time clock to project the mind into the future. I have perfected the clock, but I need someone to test my invention. I know you'd just love to be the first to try it. It was with some reluctance and foreboding that I finally accepted. He explained that all I must do, was to turn the dial to any year I wanted, to close my eyes tightly and then I would automatically be projected into that year. Turning the dial to 1961, I closed my eyes. After a moment, I heard a peculiar noise and being of a curious nature, I opened them and found my- self in an entirely different world. The buildings were tall and streamlined, the cars were shaped like dewdrops with collapsible wings so that they might be converted into airplanes, the cars moved about on the ground while the people moved on a higher plane. Curiosity led me down the street. Wide-eyed, l gazed at these new wonders about me. Then, who should I meet but Bill Farley, who told me that as the Secretary of the Permanent Class Alumni Organization, he had just sent out cards to all the students of the lvl.T.H.S. class of '41 and had completed a list of what they were doing.
