Up to 1911. those desiring high school education had to walk to Atlantic Highlands, Red Bank, or Keyport. In that year the beginnings of a Township high school were made when a few classes were held in Andrew's Hotel, oldest hotel in the region, which stood on the highest point in Hillside until it was burned down in 1920. THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. In 1911, M. S. Rice. President of the Board of Education at that time, really founded the present school when he gave to the Town- ship the site of the building and one thousand dollars toward its construction. Lewis S. Thompson, also a member of the Board, donated the land down the road from the school formerly used as playground and athletic Field, and John H. Cook, until his death, editor of the Red Bank Register, gave playground equipment. Another member of the Board, Robert Hartshorne, gave the frieze representing soldiers of Alexander the Great, replica of the one now in the British Museum, and had the chestnut trim for the auditorium cut from his woods. GREENHOUSE. In 1916, realizing the need in this agricultural community for a truly practical agricultural course. Robert Hartshorne gave the school its original green- house. and M. A. Rice completed it. This was probably the first school greenhouse in the State. When brought to Leonardo it was practically rebuilt. The expense of the greenhouse as it stands today was borne by several residents of the Township. In March. 1931, a second greenhouse was built, giving us the best plant equipment in agriculture in the State. MANUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT. For many years the basement room, originally designed as a small gymnasium, has housed a manual art department. By a full summer of work in 1927. the instructor doubled the floor space for these activities. This, along with new equipment, provided by the Board of Education, paved the way for the intro- duction of diversified shop work and for still further improvement in work recognized as among the best in the State. In 1931 the two basement rooms were added. the east room for courses in moulding and foundry, metal work, jewellery, electrical work, and the west wing for mechanical drawing and eventually printing. NEVV ATHLETIC FIELD. Purchase of the ten-acre field next to the school in 1928 provided playground and athletic field, eliminated the dangerous crossing of the highwav for physical training and paved the way for necessary expansion. OTHER BUILDING CHANGES, September, 1931, the present gym was com- pleted. In January, 1932, the physics and chemistry room were fitted up with tables and equipment and a full-sized room was used for the library. The door from the present library giving access direct to the tables in the back of the auditorium gives us sufficient accommodations so that practically every pupil in study hall can do his studying under library conditions. The school's record during these years presents adequate proof that it is the quality of the teaching and not the quantity of space or equipment that really makes the school. PAGE FOUR -'illilliau Z. C E E U2 .2 X- K1 2 1936 Washington 'tllirip The Class of 1936 started on the fourteenth annual VVashington Trip bright and early on the morning of Thursday, April 30. There were ninety-seven pupils who went on the trip, most of whom made their expenses by selling candy and play tickets. The various members were picked up at the scheduled stops and the busses left Red Bank Station at 6:30 A.M.D.S,T. VVe traveled southward, passing through Hights- town a11d stopping at Merchantville High School. VVe crossed the Delaware River to Newcastle, Delaware and through Elkton, Maryland, where almost every house had a large sign. Minister, Marriage Licenses. YVe crossed the Susquehanna River and had luncheon at the Colonial Hotel, Havre de Grace. VVe again set out on our journey and went through Aberdeen. where the big army guns are tested and then to Baltimore. the city of daily-washed white front steps. VVe arrived at the Hotel Lafayette, VVash- ington, D. C., at 2:00 P. M. Standard Time. XYe left almost immediately for the Capitol where our picture was taken with Senator NVarren Barbour. Wle went to the U. S-. Supreme Court and stayed until they adjourned at 4:30. VVe then saw the House of Representatives in session where the topic of discussion was munitions. The Senate had adjourned in the morning before we arrived but we did see the beautiful room in which they meet. VVe returned to Hotel Lafayette for dinner at 6:30. We visited the Library of Congress, which is known as America's Most Beautiful Buildingfl It contains three million volumes, the original Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, letters of VVashington and Lincoln and also two copies of 1.iucoln's Gettysburg address, claimed to be the most authentic copies. lt is interesting to note that both copies are different and that neither is the version we memorize in school. At 8:45 we left for the Palace Theater where we saw Things to Comefl Upon arising on Friday morning we discovered it was still very warm and after breakfast we went on a sightseeing tour. Our guides pointed out various places of interest including Hotel Shoreham, VVardmann Park Hotel, various embassies, legations and famous or historical residences. VVe visited the new reptile, monkey and lion houses at Rock Creek Zoo and then the Arlington Cemetery where we visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the adjoining Arlington Amphitheatre which has a seating' capacity of 5,000 people and standing room for 5.000 more. Vyle had luncheon and then went to the National Museums and the Smithsonian Institute. The latter was founded by an English rnineralogist who had never seen America. It contains Lindberglfs plane, Spirit of St. Louisfl At Mt. Vernon, our next stop, we went through VVashington's Mansion, saw the beautiful grounds and the tomb where his body is now at rest. VVe had dinner and then visited the Lincoln Memorial. At the Fox Theater we saw The Unguarded Hour. After breakfast Saturday morning we went to the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Guides explained to us the process of making money and stamps while we actually saw the various steps. Vtie went to the Washington Monument which is 555 feet high and contains a stone from each state in the Union. After collecting our bags at the hotel we left for Annapolis where we visited Memorial Hall and the Naval Academy Chapel. It is the most beautiful chapel in the United States. NVe saw the tomb of John Paul jones which was very beautiful. After luncheon at Carvel Hail we left for Baltimore and continued to Camden where we had dinner at the Plaza Hotel. There was much singing and cheering on the way home, though some slept through it all. VVe arrived at Red Bank Station slightly ahead of schedule, all tired but happy and sorry that the trip was over so soon. VVe are all grateful to Mr. Redcay, the members of the faculty and the student body who have made this trip possible and enjoyable by their kindness, understanding and fine cooperation. Before we open the book, we remember how new and exciting high school was to us the first few weeks of our Freshman year: how strange it all seemed. XVe hardly knew each other, coming from different schools, but we soon became acquainted. XYe open the book and find the First page headed Freshmen . On this page is recorded the events which occurred during our first year in Middletown Township High School. XYe see a newspaper article telling of the establishment of the Nois Serped. This word spells Depression when reversed, and the object of the club is to have those students who are able to do so, submit a small sum each week to help the needy. VVe see snapshots of the Student Council and Building and Grounds Committee. to which we have elected representatives, VVe glance at the pictures of students who have taken part in Chapel programs, and also at the various clubs which we have been permitted to join. The girls of the High School have given a Physical Education Demonstration, and we see photographs of the Freshmen who have taken part. ln this year also, was inaugurated the Service Club VVe see a photograph of the members of this club. They were selected as members because of their service to and attitude toward, the school. As 1932 was Presidential Election year, open Political Forums were held in assembly, the Freshman Class being represented by George Schmidt as chairman for the Socialist group. XVe turn the page and find USophmore as the title. Again we see pictures of the Student Council and the Building and Grounds Committee, and we find newspaper clippings telling of the activities of these bodies. Vile see pictures of more clubs than in the Freshman year because we have had a more extensive choice of clubs to choose from. The Service Club has been continued this year, and we find a greater number of Sophomores on it than there were Freshmen the previous year. junior is the title of the next page. Wle have formed as a class organization this year and Find a contract which we have signed, agreeing to do our part toward the class. XTC see a list of our class ofncers-President, Francis Lawley: Vice-President. june Schofield: Secretary, Doris Hurst: Treasurer, John Horter: Vice-President, VVilliam Bocckel. And here is a newspaper clipping of our Hallowe'eu party. VVe read ot' the various clowns, Spanish ladies, witches. Tarzans, and nondescript costumes, and the games which were played. And then we have pasted in our book a Christmas card, which reminds us of our Christmas Card Sale, A short ivhile after this we have also conducted our Magazine Campaign. XYhen the Seniors tinished selling candy, we began, and remember well the first few trying days at our task. And then at the very bottom of the page we have a section ruled otif which is captioned New York Tripfl In it we find souveniers of the Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History, literature on the Holland Tunnel, through which we had passed, and the Empire State Building, of which we had been to the top. XYe have, too, a book-mark from the NBC Broadcasting Studios, through which we had been conducted. Vl'e also have the program from the Center Theatre. where we saw The Great VValtz . Vl'e have a few booklets describing the S. S. Rex, the boat which we had visited. Then we have given a prom in honor of the Seniors, and chosen our class colors, green and white. As we turn the page for the last time we find it entitled t'Senior, Ou this page we End photographs of the class officers who take us through these busy timesgl-'resident, George Schmidt: Vice-President, Eleanor lnglingg Secretary, Doris Hurst: Treasurer, Xorman Vifallingg Vice-President, Raymond Dowd. VVe Find, too. photographs of the two plays which we have presented, Bc Yourself , and Huckleberry Finn , and the operetta 'lIt's an Old Spanish Custom . Candy selling has now begun in earnest and we remember how worried everyone was. for fear he would not have enough credit to take the XYashington trip. Our pictures are taken for our year book, the Odranoel. At the bottom of this page, too. is a special section, which is called l'The Vilashington Trip. XVe have snapshots of the buildings, which we have taken on our trip on April 30, May l and May 2. VVe see the Lincoln Memorial, XVashington Monument, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. the Congressional Library and Mount Vernon. XVe remember the Senate and House of Representatives, the Pan-American Building, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, Smithsonian Institute and the XVhite House. XVe remember, too. the Hotel Lafayette at which we stayed during our visit in XVashington. VVe started back for Leonardo High School on Saturday morning, May 2, and stopped off at Annapolis, which we visited. Now as we close the scrapbook, we ponder. and wonder what will happen to us in the future, and hope that our lives will be hlled with many happy hours such as those spent during our four years in Middletown Township High School.
