We did as well as we expected. We were a young team and gained quite a bit of experience. - Gerry McEneny truggling through a rebuilding season with a definite lack of depth, the Middletown South Track Team posted a 3-7 record for the 1979 cam- paign. Highlighted by a fourth consecutive victory over Middletown North, the Eagles managed a few surprises during the season. South placed fourth in the Shore Relays fof 17 teamsl and broke the school record for the three man javelin team. Freshman Kevin Ryan was also a pleasant surprise, running ex- tremely well as the anchor on the mile relay team. Bob Lenczyk fmiddle distancel and Robert Meyer fpole vaultl also provided South followers with many exciting mo- ments at the track. UPPER RIGHT - Junior Michelle Monroe easily clears the high jump. We could have a winning season any year by playing 'push-overs'. We don't do that we challenge the toughest teams and we hold our own. - Joe Eckart 7-9 record was only an indication of hat a well-rounded team South had during the 1979 season. The boys played tough against the strongest op- position. When South did lose a match, it was usually by one point. Middletown South's Tennis Team was invited to the State Toumament and gave State Champion Franklin Township a tough match before con- ceding. The Eagles number one singles player, Mike Gasser, was invited to play in the Monmouth College Tournament and was not defeated until the final round. Later Mike was selected number one singles player on the All-Shore second team.
