We did as well as we expected. We were a young team and gained quite a bit of experience. - Gerry McEneny truggling through a rebuilding season with a definite lack of depth, the Middletown South Track Team posted a 3-7 record for the 1979 cam- paign. Highlighted by a fourth consecutive victory over Middletown North, the Eagles managed a few surprises during the season. South placed fourth in the Shore Relays fof 17 teamsl and broke the school record for the three man javelin team. Freshman Kevin Ryan was also a pleasant surprise, running ex- tremely well as the anchor on the mile relay team. Bob Lenczyk fmiddle distancel and Robert Meyer fpole vaultl also provided South followers with many exciting mo- ments at the track. UPPER RIGHT - Junior Michelle Monroe easily clears the high jump. Success isn't measured in team records, but in the advances made by each individual. - Lou Mazzi ven though the Middletown South Girls' Track Team finished the season with a losing record, the achieve- ments ofthe team were diversified and frequent. Senior Cheryl Smack retained her State Championship in the shot put and established a new South record in the discf Patti Gillen raced to a new two mile record for the Eagles. In addition to these three outstanding accomplish- ments, the girls' team managed to es- tablish ten other school records. As the end of the season ap- proached, the Eagles Girls' Track Team won 18 medals while participating in 15 events at the Monmouth County Meet, with medals being issued to the first five places only. 1979 was surely a year of individual accomplishment for the Girls' ,Track Team.
