Reflection without study is dangerous. All Electives augment our basic reading, writing and arithmetic Academics is not a pleasant subject, but a necessary one to cover if the yearbook is to be complete. Reading, writing, and arithmetic are usually the first words that come to mind when the word academics is mentioned. Yet, at Middletown High academics is much more than this. While we are required to take those not so always pleasant Math, Science, English and Social Studies classes there are many different elective courses to choose from to complete our schedules. Some of the highlights of this academic school year were the new space shuttle-like copier that sits in the main office, the celebration of National Chemistry Day, the Contemporary Issues field trips to probate court, the Recreational Activities field trip to the golf course, the presentation of a book to the Minority Student Coalition, the first fall National Honor Society Induction, plus the numerous guest speakers who visited our classrooms. Throughout this section we tried to capture the spirit of learning mixed with fun and the enlightenment of minds in the company of friends and peers. For no matter how much we complain, classes aren't so bad. mm FOOTBALL The Blue Dragon football team won the Class MM State Championship by defeating Bristol Central, 27-0, in the title game December 4th at Veteran’s Stadium in New Britain. Captained by Steve Perry, Otis Rankins and Steve Hill, MHS finished with a 10-1 record including a season-ending 9 game winning streak. Middletown opened its season by whipping Bassick of Bridgeport, then lost its only game, a 21-16 decision to Watertown. The Dragons then ripped off 7 straight wins before crushing previously undefeated Berlin, 49-16, to win the Northwest conference title. Senior Dennis James was named to The Hartford Courant's Class M all-state team and senior Otis Rankins was named to both The Courant’s Class M all-state team and The New Haven Register's all-state team. MHS was voted No. 2 in the Hartford Courant poll and No. 3 in the New Haven Register poll. But the way the Dragons improved, by the end of the season, they just might have been No. 1. Another great feat of the Lady Dragons was beating Mercy twice and beating their tough competitors of Berlin twice for the first time in 4 years. Four players made the All-Conference team. Sarah Danielson was second team and won the awards for outstanding sportsmanship. Vickie Wright was first team. Co-Captain Tammy D’Aquila was first team for the second time in a row and Co-Captain Noelle Emmette was first team for the third year in a row. Noelle also won the most consistent player award for the second year in a row and received honorable mention All-State. The team posted an overall record of 12-6. They made the state tournament for the fourth year in a row. Senior leadership made this very successful season possible. Teamwork and sacrifice were the themes for this group. Row 1: K Henry, S. A 3-0 beginning was one of the best starts in recent years, and it included a 1-0 victory over Northwest Con- ference rival Plainville. The team had two other shu- touts this season; a 0-0 tie with St. Paul and a 1-0 vic- tory in the season finale against Coginchaug. Next year's squad should again be strong, with start- ers Bob Passamano and Mike Giardina returning to the offensive line. The Dragon Clamp” de- fense will also be tough again next season despite losing Co-Captains Geoff Konstan and Terry Jackson along with fullback Tim Dowty. Matt Heath and sophomore Mike Shapiro will return to keep the clamp alive. MEN’S SOCCER Row 1: D. Vaughn, J. Chesbro, W. Lopez. (Captain) G. Konstan, (Captain) T. iackson, C. Bengston. Although the team ended with a winless season efforts of the team can not be overlooked. The Lady Dragons had a good defensive team with goalies Mary Jandreau and Cathy Wickland and a tremendous amount of support given by the rest of the team members. A few highlights of the season occurred when Rhonda Leone, Lisa Berlind, and Ronnie Caruso scored goals. The biggest disappointment of the season happened when the Lady Dragons lost a very close game in the final minutes with a score of 3-1. The level of experience is high as is the enthusiasm among next year’s seniors and juniors. We wish them the best of luck in their admirable quest for victory. They had a winning streak for the last four meets, culminating in an unex- pectedly strong second place finish at the CVSC conference meet. Seniors Rodenhizer. Matt Rollefson, and Lee Koslow pro- vided the necessary leadership for a team suffering a loss of eight seniors from 86-87. For this reason they have adopted the motto It's the quality that counts, not the size.” The women sure have proved this to be true. They have had to rely on the many talented team members to carry them to almost impos- sible victories. Rogers Row 2: N. Woolard. L. Overton. Row 3: K. Hill. M Lassiter. Row 4: T. Speller This year Middletown High had a new group of majorettes. The whole school was pleasantly sur- prised by their routine at the first pep rally. Their style was not typical of most majorettes, but it was new and exciting. They ener- gized all the games and pep rallies where they per- formed. The status of this group is uncertain as of now, but we’d all be sorry to lose them. It DSC tuho know the truth are not equal to those who lone it and they are not equal to those who find pleasure in it. iUf- The Class of '88 proved they were the best during the first pep rally of the year which was held for Homecoming. During the rally we heard a heart felt speech from Mr. Hiller and Ronnie Caruso of M.H.S. soccer, an electric speech from the volleyball captains, and a hopefull hurrah from the football captains. The majorettes gave an exhilirating routine, and can you believe the dragon couldn’t even keep up? The Class of '88, after two years of being the underdogs, finally became the victors in the trike race, the poster contest, and the yelling contest. HOMECOMING PEP RALLY 120 STATES PEP RALLY The festivities had begun again. This time it was for the State Championship, and yes, the class of '88 had done it led by co-captains Steve Hill, Steve Perry, and Otis Ramkins. The cheerleaders entertained us with an array of cheers and acrobatics, while the maiorettes contemplated how to get their routine started. The senior class showed that they still had it by winning the yelling contest again, but the class of 1990 made a surprise showing by winning the wheelbarrow race. Maybe there's hope for that class yet. Jl23 50’S-60’S DANCE mark of a superior man (hat lie mill take no harmful ease. I Becky Anderson. leave my best friends Sarah.
