THE LAIR 1987 Middletown High School Middletown, Connecticut 2 Three years have gone by and the Baby Dragon is now a toddler. Through spirit, pride, and determination and encouragement and sup- port from the faculty, parents, and especially the students, he has become stronger. By combining the two dominating forces of the cat Kingdom, we became twice as cunning, twice as powerful, and twice as eager for new friendships and competitions. The Class of 1987 has seen the end of an era and the beginning of a new. They died as Wildcats or Tigers and were re-bom as Dragons. This class has truly carried on the qualities of the Dragons and we hope future classes will display the same qualities. 3 Administration harry K. Nartunian Principal Alfred B. The Blue Dragons exper- ienced regular season defeat for the first time. They finished the season with a 9-2 record, a re- cord that is nothing to be ashamed of. The Dragons learned how to keep their heads up after losing, and a perfect ex- ample of this comes after Octo- ber 18. Middletown was upset by Plainville on Homecoming Day, but the following week they torched heavily favored Hill- house 35-0. That just goes to show what a loss can do to a team. The Dragons also found them- selves not competing in a cham- pionship game for the first time in three years. Although they de- feated Berlin 18-13 in the sea- son finale, a ticket to the Class M title game could not be found. Sal Morello proved to be a big surprise out of Middletown's back- field, gaining 1,084 yards on the ground. He closed out his kicking career at MHS with 99 extra points. They also didn't draw too many fans, but they did draw a winning season, a State Tour- nament appearance, and a memorable year. Under Coach George Vargo, the team proved to be a com- parison of other strengths in the state, such as northwest Confer- ence rival Berlin. Middletown fin- ished in second place in the NWC behind the Redcoats and posted an 11-7 overall record, 7- 4 in the NWC. Earlier in the season, MHS stood at 10-3 and took one of the early berths in the playoffs. They swept rival Mercy High in the two times they met. Led by Captains Stephanie Ro- sek, Kelly Willetts, Sharon Ro- man, and Kerry Schrenker, the Dragons proved that they be- longed in the Tournament. Howe- ever, an injury to Rosek forced her to miss the match. All-State spiker Noelle Emmette kept them in the match, but they bowed to eventual Class L State Champs, Platt of Meri- den. Even though it lost to Wethers- field High in the qualifying round of the Class L State tournament, 3-1, the team appeared there for the second straight year. The ups were more plentiful that the downs the team went through. Behind the consistent play of Captains Scott Aresco, Jim Imme, and Terry Jackson, The Blue Dragon booters swept Berlin and tied Vinal Tech for the City championship. We were more consistent as a team this year than last noted Aresco. It contributed greatly to our improvement. It has indeed been a memorable year for the Blue Dragons. Experience is abundant among next year's Juniors, while the new sophomore arrivals should give an added dimension of talent to an already enthusiastic-filled club. Streaks of all kinds must come to an end. This was the year the women's soccer team ended their streak. The team captured it's first vic- tory in its history, a 2-1 overtime win in Wolcott. The win expand- ed to more optimism. The last five of six games played, MHS was in contention. But being down by two goals doesn't mean a thing when you have leadership, enthusiasm, and the belief that you can win. That's what these girls had. All of the records were accom- plished by junior Rebecca Ste- vens. She shattered the old marks in the 200 yard freestyle, the 100 yard freestyle, and the 100 yard butterfly. Since there were only 14 swim- mers on the team, every person was counted on to do their best. Each individual made the team very close as well as high- powered. There were several close meets, such as the 87-86 victory over Plainville, but by far the most intense was against Had- dam-Killingworth. The team wanted to win and win they did. Five members were sent to the State Championships. They were the following: Wendy Ward, Kris- ten LaBella, Rebecca Stevens, Tracy D'Aquila and captain Had- ley Adams. Stevens will be the captain for the 1987 season. With the help of the veterans as well as the promising newcomers, the up- coming season can only be a success. Experience wasn't plentiful among the Dragons this year as they boasted only one senior, Richard Walker. Walker was joined by three juniors and one sophomore in the starting lineup of the squad. Even without much exper- ience, the varsity underclassmen will possess knowledge that will only help next year's team. Coach Tom LaBella also had a great amount of depth on his bench and worked with the sophomores on it during the season, such as Dario Highs- mith, Tyrone Speller, and Nate Turner. You did not find the Dragons among the Northwest Confer- ence's powerhouses this year. Regulars such as St. Paul and Berlin were surprisingly joined by Wicox Teach of Meriden this season. Middletown, however, recorded impressive victories over other top-notch teams such as Wolcott, Farmington and Plainville. It's schedule wasn't one of a creampuff, either. The Dragons had to contend with state power Kolbe of Bridgeport and the Spartons of Maloney. The biggest highlight of the season for Middletown came over the Christmas holiday when, for the second straight year, it captured the Manchester Rotary holiday Classic cham- pionship. The Dragon beat Wind- sor, 63-50, and topped Eastm Catholic, 53-41, for their second consecutive crown. The team com- piled a 10-9 record and captured a berth in the Class L state tour- nament. What made coach Bill Wilson's squad play so well was its ability to play as a team. When high- scoring star Kim Peterson went down with an injury, the Dragons pulled together to record a string of six straight victories. Middletown had gotten off to a slow start in the beginning by losing its first two games, but then defeated East Hampton to capture third place in its hosted Middlesex Mutual Assurance Holiday Tournament. The starting five of Shannon Flowers, Laura Newman, Vicki Wright, Tammy D'Aquila and Tracy D'Aquila really proved to be the consistent combination Middletown needed to win games. All contributed to the scoring punch while Newman and Wright starred on defense. The Lady Dragons clung to third place the entire season, proving they could stay with the leaders of the pack; Berlin and St. Paul. Middletown proved to be at its strongest peak in February, when the Dragons went 6-2. Dur- ing this time, they nailed down a spot in the Class L State Tour- nament, and joined the ranks of powerful Lyman Hall, Killingly and Westbrook clubs. It is a conditioning sport for those who want to get in shape for a spring sport as well as those who just want to im- prove their physical condition and tone up. The team consists of students from various sports like track all the way to crew as well as stu- dents who want to get in shape. The most attractive part of in- door track is the fact that it is a relaxed sport. There are only a few meets during the season. There is hardly any pressure put on anyone to win. The meets are there to have fun together as a team, get a taste of what track is like and to offer an atmosphere where one can challenge one- self. The main goal of indoor track is conditioning. Another in- centive to indoor track is that it is the only coed sport offered be- sides golf. It offers the chance for boys and girls to work together in an athletic atmosphere. In- door track is the perfect sport for those who want to be on a sport but don't want the intense com- petiveness and pressure that go along with most sports. 85 EVENTS Homecoming 88 89 School Dance - Jan. 17 50 's 60 s Dance - Feb. 7 Showcase 87 Showcase 87 Drama '87 94 Plaza Suite'' 95 Organizations '87 AFS Organizations '87 Organizations '87 Drama Club Organizations '87 Organizations '87 Junior Committee Latin Club Organizations '87 Organizations '87 If .
