CAULDRON 78 PUBLISHED BY MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL MIDDLETOWN CONNECTICUT What is it to dream the American Dream? Is it to dream of success, of wealth, of pres- tige? Is it to rise above the heads of peers to prominence and recognition, or is it to live in the pursuit of happiness, finding contentment in accomplishing the little things that eventu- ally add up? Whatever the American Dream really is, it is an individual vision. 2 HOMEMAKING And perhaps it is more significant not what one dreams, but that one does dream. The young dream as do the old. The young dream the impossible dreams; the old dream of things past and dare not dream beyond today. BUSINESS SCIENCE 3 Dreams inspire and motivate. A youth dreams of being a pro-basketball player play- ing with the famous, feverishly scoring one basket after another. The helmeted football player dreams of college teams, Heisman tro- phies, Hall of Fame. The Little League baseball player dreams of Red Sox or Yankee fame. ATHLETICS 4 TEACHING 6 Your old men shall dream dreams. Your young men shall see visions Mosea XII, 10 Such are dreams that need to be dreamed — the stuff that gives meaning and dimension to RADIO DANCE The Middletown High School Alma Mater Through the four long years of high school Midst the scenes we know so well, As the mystic charms to knowledge We vainly seek to spell Or we win athletic victories, on the football field or track Still we fight for dear old Middletown And the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o’ertake us, Mingling fast our locks with gray, Should our dearest hopes betray us, False fortune fall away; Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our memories back, And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the Orange and the Black. 10 lori Battista We followed hallowed traditions and held our Senior Frolic. 15 Beveriy J. Wendt L Zuilkowski 46 FARVEL MIN VENNER Before I came to Denmark, I had experienced two different types of high school systems. My freshman year started off in M.H.S., a new, modern school where student ranking played a big role. Although participating in many sports, clubs, and various class activities, having many friends, and enjoying my classes, I was looking for a bigger challenge. My sophomore and junior years were spent in the Middletown Alternative Program. Comprised of four teachers and eighty students, it was a place where evaluations replaced grades and where goals were to strive for in a community atmosphere. M.A.P. played a major role in helping me form my personal strengths and goals, and it made me realize my deficiencies. I stayed active in both schools' activities - yet, I applied to go abroad and spend my senior year in a totally different atmosphere. When I entered Denmark, thirty-five other students from around the world and I were put in a 3 Vi week camp and were given an introduction to the Danish language and other customs. Many of those adjustments that we considered minor, like eating and sleeping habits, turned out to be quite important. Now I am living in the northern part of Denmark in the fourth largest city known as Aalborg. My Danish family and I get along very well; and, since it was only my younger sister who spoke a little English, my biggest project was learning the Danish language. At first, I missed the company of my five brothers and sisters at home, but during the last six months, I have become a more independent person. Now I am experiencing my third type of school system. I am attending a private one hundred-and-one year old Real Skole, where kids range from seven to seventeen years old, and classes are attended from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., five days a week. The only fifteen minute break is spent in the classroom eating lunch. There is no cafeteria, auditorium, lockers, library, or gymnasium. There are no sports or class activities, and most of the kids live outside of the city and have to take trains home. Because we have to go out into the town to join clubs, most of our friends are from outside of the school. Coming in contact with so many people, in my opinion, is why people here in Europe are so openminded. As I look back on all the ups and downs, hurts and joys, and all the growth I have made through my stay here, I realize that those big, seemingly unsolvable problems are the barriers one needs to overcome in order to develop into an independent person. Take the advantage to experience, otherwise you’ll lose the chance to grow. Face the odds of life and later see what you have accomplished! 47 SENIOR DIRECTORY Michael Aforismo 175 Newfield Street Swimming (1,2,3,4), Future Plans-Drafts- man Lisa Agnes 479 East Street Track (1,2), AFS (1,2,3,4), Gymn. The Tigers lost their final game of the season, however, to crosstown rival Woodrow Wilson on Thanksgiving Day. The loss to Wilson shattered the Tigers' dream of an undefeated season. Despite the loss, Middletown turned in a super season. Coach DeNunzio had high praise for the team, which finished with 57 players. Some of the outstanding gridders were Senior Co-Captains Jamie Knight- Quarterback, and Ricky Privott-Fullback. Other Seniors who distinguished themselves were Defensive Standouts: J. Schurevich, J. Lundell, V. DeCrosta, C. Muckle, and L. Wiggins. The offense was sparked by J. Knight, R. Privott, M. Tucci, H. Watson, K. Banks, M. Breton, P. Dickes, and K. Charpentier. G. Perry was the team’s kicker while reserve Seniors T. Skoglund, B. Schurevich, J. Scarrozzo, and A. Coleman supported the team as back-up players. It’s the kind of happening that calls for cliches—but I don’t think anybody anticipated the use of that cliche, end of an era, would be so widespread. But. then again, what else could one expect it to be called. Fans sitting in on the Tigers—St. Joseph game Saturday night did. in- deed. see the end of an era—the Cornelius Thompson era. The state never has seen as fine an all-around player as Big Corny. He could do everything on the bas- ketball court—and remain humble through all the adulution heaped upon him by the school kids, adult and the state and national press. But there was more to this than Big Corny. There were four other starters who could have played with any other team in the state of Con- necticut. How can one forget an Al Mar- shall, who must rate with the finest of defensive players? Or how can you cut out the part Charlie Mtickle played? There were many a night the Tigers m eded Muckle to keep that string going. Where would the era have been without the watch charm guards Ricky Privott and Robert Earl Hy- man, two perpetual motion ma- chines. There is NO way you can forget the heroics of those who came off the bench to give the starters a respite or pick the club up w hen it appeared going downhill. How about Vito Walton, the young man who must have suffered a lot V___________________________________ BY FRED J POST The Pi-ess Sports Editor during his tenure with the team. How must it have fell to be known as Corny Thompson’s fill-in? He showed them it didn't bother him in the least when he came off the bench against SC Joseph’s to win the plaudits of the opposing coach, his teammates, coaches and the media covering the game. And then there was Marvin Priv- ott, another of Randy Newman's people who won’t believe he’s too short to make it in modem day bas keibati. Mike Rankins had his moments in the spotlight, momenta in which the junior made his presence felt. There were others who forced the varsity to play up to par. players w ho were just w aitfng to prove their worth to the team. And those who sit and wait also played an important part in the era that apparently has just ended. You just couldn’t have had the era without the likes of a Derek Parley, Rteven Hannah. Brian Hunter, Tommy Jackson, Monte Watson and Hteven Win- home. They all played their pan, even If it was just serving as opposition for the starters in those rough scrim- mages. All were an integral part of what could have been the best basketball team the state has ever seen. They played the best and strong- est teams that could he scheduled around their own Conference slate. And they most certainly did play and beat the strongest Class M field ever assembled. Rt. Thomas Aquinas of New Britain, 8t. Joseph of Trumbull and Northwest Catholic all could have won It had not the Tigers lM en in the division. The three Catholic schools had great teams, one of which will prohahly win the state title next year. That's how good they are. Much of the credit must go to its coach. Tommy LaBella. who ruled with the iron hand in tin velvet glove. He taught; the young rnen listened. There is a bond between the young Tigers and the youthful coil eh. a bond that one set's very little of these days in the world of sports. He told them he had the utmost laith in them as men They re- sponded by returning that faith with loyalty. It is a bigger story than the Tigers' winning 7b games in a row on their way to three stale cham- pionships. Not one of EaBella's young men ever got into trouble. They were a w ell-disciplined group of voung men both on the floor and off it. However, the world as we now know it may not be Interested in that part of the story. But it will hold the Tigers in greater stead through the years than will the 76 straight vic- tories. And maybe it is coincidence that the most renowned player on the squad is called, “Corny,” because that is w hat most pc-oplc will call the story of LaBella and his young Ti- gers. Thut’s what the fans were chant- ing at tin end of the game. “Corny, Corny, Corny.” It’s another cliche in the mould of “end of an era,” and if it be corny, give us more of it. _____________________________________ 106 The Gentle Giant Often a man destined for greatness or fame walks quietly, barely noticed by a busy populace, but eventually he demands our attention. We stop, admire, and ponder with awe. Such a man has risen, quietly, steadily in our midst — Cornelius Thompson. Like Saul he stands above the crowd, graced by humility and favored by ability. He stands with dignity, charges with determination, amazes all who behold him. Accolades inundate him and he accepts them gracefully. Steadily he moves forward, listens carefully to his mentors, and builds his future — a credit to family, community, and school.
