CAULDRON Published by the graduating Class of 1977 of Middletown High School, Middletown Connecticut 1973 1977 An idea, a blueprint carefully drafted . . . A yawning excavation; then steel structure frames pushing up from the depths. Gradually cold, concrete walls enclose the frame - an empty building, gray faceless windows reflecting passing parades of clouds Three Four Yet ... Soon the silence is shattered, the void is filled by living movement, and the cold, impersonal ediface begins to live, to vibrate with the actions of students ... and in the four fleeting years of time we give to it - a soul. School This school will always exist - in our fond memories; often within the imagination we will relive those four years of warm comarderie - that love we had for each other. And, we hope, this school will remain immortal, imprinted forever upon our hearts - always a part of us, and we a part of it. Jt o' School A home away from home. Here we've found brothers and sisters. Here we've found friends - forever Eight In four years we have accomplished much. We have grown taller, wiser, and now feel ready for the ultimate responsibility - the search for truth within ourselves - self discovery. Dedicated teachers have guided, us, shared our triumphs and disappointments. Now strengthened by the orange and black ties of new and old traditions, the fresh promises of the future, we come to the final farewell and leave this building, this school, no longer an empty shell, but a bustling community where others will learn to grow. Adieu, farewell - for a while. 1973 1977 A And struggle through math, science — Eleven We've made friends A school is a unique community ... we play, work, laugh, cry and grow together. Thirteen Fourteen School sort of grows on you Fifteen ... Its like a balancing act ... Sixteen .. . We’ve struggled through the mysteries of math, languages, sciences, and literature. We've struggled through the emotional traumas of lost friendships. We've won some battles, but lost others. We've laughed together; we've cried together. We've known love, and even hate. We've tasted joy and we've tasted sorrow. Scott-Pensive a moment Nella Monarca Forty Nine I am an A.F.S. student from Nairobi, Kenya, and the aim for me to come in the States was to have an experience of a different culture from mine and to learn more about people. I arrived here in August 1976 and I was given the most warmly welcome I ever had by my family and teachers. I live with the Fortin family. The first few days of school I got confused be- cause of mods, A, B day and so forth. Even some- times I missed my lessons, but the teachers con- cerned appreciated my apology. Also I couldn't communicate with people very easy because I had a very deep British English accent which was hard for people to understand me when I talked. Neither could I understand everything whenever someone talked to me fast in the American Eng- lish accent, but eventually everything got o.k. I didn’t get a chance to have lessons with every teacher in the school, but those whom I took lessons with helped me a lot willingly. This year has been a treasure for me and I will always remember the staff, students and the oth- ers. Since I don’t know how to express more, I will just end by wishing everyone good luck including the seniors and everyone concerned in Middle- town High. And God be with you all everywhere you are now and always. Mary Teresa J. SBy SBihaku Auf Wiedershehen! At the beginning of the year I had had some ideas of what it would be like to go to school in the United States. Now, at the end of it, I realize that it was very different from what I thought it would be. I am not an AFS student nor a representative of any other program but spent this year with friends of my family. I came over here two days before school started in September, and I remember that I could hardly understand any English. It took me almost one month until I understood most of the morning announcements. In school I would just sit there and try to understand but not talk to anybody. It took me a long time then to start talking to people. The more English I learned the more people I got to know. But it is not only that I learned another language and met other people. I have also been going to a school very different from the one I went to before. Could you imagine M.H.S. without the cafeteria, the swimming pool, or the library? Could you imagine a school without a Nurse’s office, without lockers, an intercom, or Guidance Counselors? Could you think of not having pep assemblies and any kind of sport teams? That is about what German Schools are like. I am glad I could go to a school like M.H.S. It sure is more fun to go to a school like that, where you even can choose your courses and do with your free time what you want (almost). By and large it has been a great year, and I am really glad I came. I have some friends here I wish I could take home with me; I would not want to leave anyway. My best wishes to the Class of 78'! Enjoy yourselves, and have a great Senior year! And also to all those people from M.A.P.: I had a real good time with you in Washington D.C., and I am sorry that I did not join the program.
