4 A virtuous woman who can find? For her price is far above rubies. She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms. Ella Tambussi Grasso made history by becom- ing the first woman to be elected governor in her own right. After twenty-two years of political ser- vice, she was elected governor of Connecticut by a 200,000 vote plurality, November, 1974. HER EXCELLENCY, GOVERNOR ELLA GRASSO She is not an ardent feminist, but she does personify the reality of equal rights for women. “I was the people’s candidate, and the results have sustained me. I would hope that whatever qualities I have would be a credit to women as well as to the human race — of which I am also a part of.”
