She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms. She spreadeth out her hand to the poor; Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. Strength and dignity are her clothing; And she laugheth at the time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And the law of kindness is on her tongue. The 1974 version of the Middletown High School Soccer Team completed a very success- ful season. The final record was 10 wins, 5 losses, and 3 ties. The last regular scheduled game was a night game with Vinal Tech which the Tigers won 3-0 to earn the City Championship. The Tiger’s conference record was 5-0-2 as Middletown kept its record of never losing in a confer- ence soccer game. The Tigers were ranked fifteenth in the State Class “M” Tournament and made a fine showing. The Tigers were finally eliminated by Killingly 2-1 as the winning goal came with only 1:14 left to play. The Tigers were led all year by Tri- Captains Sergio Guricullo, Ken King, and Sal Savastra. These three were elected to the M.S.A.C. All- Conference team. Co-captains Mark Sbona and Kenny King led this year’s team. Junior Gary Mu- zik starred as the leveling hitter and was voted the most valuable player. Further honors were gathered by catcher Richard Tosto, outfielder Mark Sbona, and Coach DeNunzio. The two players were selected for the annual Connecti- cut High School All-star game the class M schools against the class S schools. Coach DeNunzio was hon- ored by the Connecticut High School Coaches’ Associa- tion as head coach of the class M contenders. Both the varsity and the J.V.’s enjoyed the luxury of playing on their own home field. This marks the second season in their own new facilities. Bill Fargnoli’s J.V.’s ended with a very successful 10- 3 record. Tigers — we congratulate you for a great season! Reach, Ruth When we realize that the Tiger Tennis Team has no courts and often only a token use of the city facilities, we are amazed at their fantastic accom- plishments this year. The 13-3 record for the year was accomplished by captain Dean Coogan with a perfect record in first singles and doubles, John Gebhardt holding down second singles, and senior new commer Rich Renock coming through with an 11 and 3 record in third singles. The 13 wins this year pushed our four year re- cord to 52-11. The team began its season defeating Cromwell and Coginchaug on their new all-weather track. The team suffered a great setback as senior cap- tain Gill Liljedahl fell and broke his hand. During the weeks which followed, the Tigers did their best but obviously missed the talents of Lil- jedahl. At the spring sports banquet, Ted Tucci was given the most valuable player award along with the scholar athlete award. Sophomore Harold Johnson won the most improved player award. His war record includes Deputy Chief of the Italian Division, Secret Intelli- gence chief in the Middletown Theatre during World War II. Among his awards are the medal of Freedom, Iron Cross of Merit (Italy), Gold Lateran Cross from the Vatican, and an honorary Doctor of Juris from the University of Rome. Among his numerous achievements in Connecticut are his political career, his service as State’s Attorney, municipal judge, advisor to Connecticut State Fe- deration of Labor and Counsel for the Italian Consul General of N.Y.C. With such an impressive background, he guided the Middletown High School building committee, a demanding and tedious endeavor that brought to fruition this new and daring edifice. Since I came to the U.S. in August, 1974, and particularly since I started school here, I have made many, many friends. I was given a great number of opportunities to meet people and go places, and I am grateful for all these experiences. Jamie, in his usual good mood — the Kiwi lad with personality! 112 Perhaps one of the most important parts of my year in the U.S. was my school experience. I was fortunate in being able to sample two different educational systems. I have been able to make many comparisons between the two school systems and have come up with good and bad points for both. One aspect of the schools here which struck me hard is the facilities which exist within each separate school. Modem, up-to-date equipment and teaching aids make learning a pleasure. In New Zealand, however, we are not as fortunate, and I do hope you appreciate the great facilities available to you. Living away from your home, your family, and country for a year is not at all easy. There are some sacrifices which have to be made. However, I would say that this year has been the most reward- ing year of my life. It’s just great to have come to the United States not knowing a soul, and then be reluctant to leave so many wonderful friends. James Travers and faith 113 Susan White Susan Wiknik April Williams R.
