On the contrary, it brings out the real reason for sports in the school — the opportunity for all students to play. But, people measure the success of a sports program by the number of wins.” Linda Clark Margaret Clark Richard Conway Ronald Davis Cynthia Day Christine Di Mauro 16 “I like going to school better this year than I did the last, but I d still rather not go.” Cristina Dodds Diane Donnelly 18 Patricia Formica Who said, “Freshmen are wise little punks”? Charles Ferrara Richard Glover Walter Golob David Grimaldi Dennis Gage Charles Galgowski Scott Garret Robert Grimm Th ad deus Hart 21 “If you put us all in a new package we don’t look so bad after all.’’ Cecil Heckstall Donald Heizman Scott Herman Donald Herring 22 Thomas Humphreys 23 Maria Labbadia 24 Gilda Liliedahl Lynn MacDonald Donna Maloney Frederick Manuel Christine Marchese Sili ana Merlino 27 Wanda M err it Margaret Mettler Angela Mia no Nancy Mignault Thelma Miller “The Experience we all went through was the fun of work- ing together for a purpose.” Kathleen Morello Sarah Mink Rhonda Monthei Joyce Niedswiecki Mary Ogorzalek “All in all the teachers and students are starting to work together.” 31 32 David Salamandra Peter Smith Louise Speller “Maybe it’s better this way we won’t get into so much trouble.” Patty Ann Stevens 35 Richard Tucci Debra Tuthill Linda Tuttle The Scholar-Athlete Award for 1971 - R. Tucci Anthony Vecca Robert Vincent ( lass Leader Cites Change Cj In Attitudes By JOHN BART Middletown High School’s Class of 1971 saw the school change from “an institution built on ivory tower principles” to one bom anew as a free swinging “continual forum.” In his valedictory address de- livered last night to his class- mates, Richard F. Tucci out- lined the changes which occurred in the school and in them during the four years cul- minated by commencement cer- emonies at Wesleyan Univer- sity’s Andrus Field. Their experiences, which in- cluded radical changes in the complexion of the student body and periods of racial tension had produced in them “a special sense of awareness.” Members of the Class of 1971 are, he said, “more aware of our own capabi- lities, and more open to the var- ied capabilities of each other.” Most of the changes in the school, he said, flowed from “the simple fact that the com- position of the student body changed.” The Changes The number of non-English speaking students increased, re- districting brought in students with no particular family alle- giance to the school, and the number of black students, “all deeply aware of their own black- ness,” increased. Many other students who would ordinarily have attended MHS went off to the parochial high schools. Pressures on the school ad- ministration, teachers and the antiquated building grew, Tucci recalled. When black students boycotted classes, and a day was set aside for free discussion among stu- dents and teachers, “A task well begun was all but abandoned due to the efforts of parents in the community. Brief racial brawls erupted last year, and police were sta- tioned in the school. Students, he said, “living in varying degrees of terror and repression.” Beyond Saving? Mixed into the situation was MHS student involvement in the Wesleyan strike over the Cam- bodian invasion and more open attitudes towards drugs and sex. As the 1970 school year ended, Tucci said, it was as though the school’s death was awaited, since it seemed beyond saving. With the new school year, h o w e v e f, ' A new courage emerged, as we saw new ideas and programs introduced.” An ..J i n 41 Class Leader (Continued from Page 1) “energetic principal” was in- stalled in office, and, “rigidity became a thing of the past.” The open campus and a varie- ty of new educational formats contributed to “transform a six- hour day shift into a continual forum.” Mayor Anthony Sbona re- minded members of the class that they were indeed special because, due to the fact that they can become federal elec- tors at age 18. they are or very soon will be “part of the estab- lishment.” He called on them to demonstrate their concern by participating in the electoral process. School Reform Janet Wilson, the class saluta- toriam spoke on the need for educational reform. Diplomas were presented to the members of the class by Principal Edward E. Pehota. Only one student, Donald Moses, deviated from the tradi- tional commencement mode of attire. In contrast to the rest of the boys in the class who wore blue gowns, Moses wore a black robe, and embellished it with a gold peace symbol. At least one student did not take part due to his refusal to wear a cap and gown. The invocation was delivered by the Rev. Robert W. Hender- son of Third Congregational Church. The Rev. Raymond In- trovigne of St. Sebastian’s Church pronounced the ben- ediction. 42 45 SAUCY PERT SOPHS “When you win, you celebrate; when you lose, you meditate.” 57 58 GOT THE SPIRIT? 59 Juniors At Work, At Play, Ready To Take Over The Torch, Carry On The MHS Tradition. 60 aviw 67 70 SUSAN ADLEY high st., middle field special service award: altrusa award; gsl 2, 3; mfad 2, 3, 4; leader’s club 4; bowling 3; senior slate.
