The Explosive Sixties Although it is difficult to look back and consider what has so recently passed and is still continuing, the sixties, in retrospect, can only be described as explosive. They began with lohn Fitzgerald Kennedy and the spirit of youth. Slowly we remember the Cold War - Bay of Pigs; the revolution of Civil Rights - the ordeal of lames Meredith; and the Beatles — the force behind the revolution of music. Blinding designs of color and black and white confusion splashed across the nation in a new trend of art. Our horizons became limitless as our race in space developed new dimension and depth. Assassination — a young man dead — another left to carry on the past. All the way with LBI — Lyndon Baines Johnson - barbecues and big hats, noise, crashing down on youth. War: Vietnam, and youth donning helmets and guns to fight and shoot and bomb. Talk and shout — shoot and kill - and riots. Martin Luther King receives the Nobel Peace Prize. Billows of black smoke, ready to catch fire, spreading over the nation - the murder oi Malcom X, the tone of days to come. The first global communication satellite is launched and the unconditional talks on Vietnam are proposed but the military takes control of South Vietnam in lune. Long hot days of summers past and to come are reflected in the burning flames of Chicago - and Casey Stengel say farewell to 56 years of baseball.
