CAULDRON published by the class of '69 Middletown High School Middletown, Connecticut Remember all the days Patterned just alike — Each finely sectioned by timed bells - And the four schedules you followed Upstairs and down A new diagram for a new year. 3 ya We played in patterns — Formations designed to shape success — And built them in the classroom, following Trends of thought and Graphs of lines. (They say History repeats itself.) j We broke patterns — Friendships dissolved and Illusions crumbled. Old faculties Gave way to new. Age-honored codes. Their meaning lost, were abandoned In the fury of the times. And yet, this silent setting With its deep halls, has long lain Undisturbed by generations of violent youth - Searching for security, Clinging to precious tradition And to each other . . . 8 m Wjk Clusters in the halls — Each member unique, with style All his own. But each Loosely woven in a richer scheme - The sharing of a common time A common space. Some find their substance here — Fill in the outlines Shape the iuture. Most — bewildered by the shock of Time, and their own Limits — are slow to accept 14 The Explosive Sixties Although it is difficult to look back and consider what has so recently passed and is still continuing, the sixties, in retrospect, can only be described as explosive. They began with lohn Fitzgerald Kennedy and the spirit of youth. Slowly we remember the Cold War - Bay of Pigs; the revolution of Civil Rights - the ordeal of lames Meredith; and the Beatles — the force behind the revolution of music. Blinding designs of color and black and white confusion splashed across the nation in a new trend of art. Our horizons became limitless as our race in space developed new dimension and depth. Assassination — a young man dead — another left to carry on the past. All the way with LBI — Lyndon Baines Johnson - barbecues and big hats, noise, crashing down on youth. War: Vietnam, and youth donning helmets and guns to fight and shoot and bomb. Talk and shout — shoot and kill - and riots. Martin Luther King receives the Nobel Peace Prize. Billows of black smoke, ready to catch fire, spreading over the nation - the murder oi Malcom X, the tone of days to come. The first global communication satellite is launched and the unconditional talks on Vietnam are proposed but the military takes control of South Vietnam in lune. Long hot days of summers past and to come are reflected in the burning flames of Chicago - and Casey Stengel say farewell to 56 years of baseball. The squad won impressive victories over Windsor, Plainville, Newington, and Southington behind Tri-captains Fred Banach, Rich Salkauskas, and Bruce Zila. A controversial call prevented an upset over Wilson yet the Tigers produced the game's Most Valuable Player, Fred Banach. Christmas '65 marks a holiday truce in Vietnam and a plea from Mrs. lohnson to beautify America. Music rocks the youth; The Mamas and the Papas hit the charts, Simon and Garfunkel - the critics. The Beatles meet new opposition - John Lennon claims they're more popular than lesus. Russian landscapes and lulie Andrews fill the movie theaters and Dr. Zhivago and The Sound of Music take the awards. New York's Metropolitan Opera House closes after 83 years of song; Truman Capote highlights a murder In Cold Blood; and Arthur Schlesinger's A Thousand Days: JFK in the White House glorifies past events, giving way to those that come. The Lunar Orbiter I circles the moon - the first U.S. satellite to do so; a 140 day newspaper strike ends and Walt Disney dies at the age of 65. The first U.S. space disaster occurs when a flash fire inside the Apollo spacecraft kills Virgil M. Grisson, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chafee during a test at Cape Kennedy, ames R. Hoffa enters a federal penitentiary and riots flicker across the country - Boston — Buffalo — Chicago — Milwaukee — Atlanta. Stokley Carmichael meets with groups in Georgia and the Green Bay Packers become the first World Football Champions. Dissent among the students becomes the American way and universities and small colleges brew the storm that sweeps the nation. 33 34 Mr. Prendergast Mrs. Zdienlz Mrs. Ddltry Mr. Gioco Miss Walsh Mr. loffredo Mrs. Wilcox Mr. Tucci fluctuating - driving - striving - Toward a final night under the lights Prof Gallitto's Tigers overcame 24 opponents to win their second consecutive Class B State Championship and to secure the only undefeated record in Connecticut. The Bengals took their third consecutive CVC title with a 16-0 mark, then defeated non-league opponents St. Thomas Aquinas, Valley Regional, and Cromwell, putting the record at 20-0, the first undefeated MHS season since 1904. With the four Tournament victories over Windsor Locks, Guilford, South Windsor, and St. Thomas Aquinas, the team captured the School's third State Championship in Coach Gallitto's nine years. Ted Hathaway collected the tournament and city series MVP trophies in addition to setting a new MHS seasonal record by scoring 615 points. He was also named to the All-Connecticut team along with Wilbur Pope who made it for the third year in a row. Co-captains Wilbur Pope and George Glover, both starters for four years, accumulated impressive point totals - Pope setting a new MHS high with 1602 points, 600 more than his closest challenger, and Glover placing third of all MHS scores with 800. right on down to the splash! Charles S. Robb are married, and the world's first successful human heart transplant is performed by Dr. Christian Barnard in Cape Town, Africa. Hemlines are cut in half while Twiggy creates thin vibrations of narrow lines and loud colors throughout the fashion world. Hippies block the streets with flowers and black oaths; Bonnie and Clyde echo cries of violence — reflecting moods, demanding thought. Black people, art, music, thought envelop the country, pushing down the doors. Bill Cosby - Dick Gregory — Supremes — Eldridge Cleaver — Eartha Kitt — fames Brown — Sidney Poitier — shout, listen, now it's Black! President Johnson proposes a Head Start Program for needy children and Huntley finds himself without Brinkley. Smokers lose more work time than non-smokers; fohnson and Kosygin meet in Glassboro, New fersey to talk of nuclear weapons; and an appeal for open housing is made. LBf's popularity is rising - so are Vietnam War costs. H. Rap Brown is arrested for inciting a riot, LBI urges gun control, the laymen approve birth control, and the Saturn V is a success. Men are hoping to land on the moon before 1970 and Mayor lohn Lindsay is chosen Father of the Year. The Pueblo is seized; Dr. Benjamin Spock is arrested for helping young men dodge the draft, and Nixon begins. Romney quits the race and the hippies are moving out of California. 55 Mb and clean up city hall. I finally realized the vital importance of being earnest. Wilde I try to give satisfaction, sir.” 59 Each unique, a separate style, a different dream MARIA SALAFIA - GSL QUEEN 1 Running heats - Because of lack of depth, the MHS tennis team won only against Rockville, accumulating a 1-12 record. The team captained by Eugene Gardner, was again and slamming aCGS. coached by Mr. Mason. 65 66 with a strike for success. — the best laid plans of mice and men go oft astray — Burns Yearbook 68 Eugene McCarthy campaigns, soon to be followed by Robert F. Kennedy while 500 Americans die each week in Vietnam. LBI stops 90% of Vietnam bombing, decides not to run, and hijackers continue to do their thing. The Graduate seeks the youth, Mia and the Beatles become Flower Children while Law and Order is the new vogue. Assassination — a peace maker dead — a dream destroyed — Martin Luther King is killed. Tears, noise, disbelief: lines and lines of mourners walk the streets and wonder what will come. Students protest at Columbia University, battered bodies - battered minds, reaching, kicking, screaming for a change. Humphrey and Rockefeller enter the race but Aretha socks it to 'em and Resurrection City rises fast. Peace and freedom, live and learn, kill - kill — kill — Robert F. Kennedy is shot. Assassination clothes the nation in a new trend — a fashion of the times. We see a family diminished and sadly follow them to their graves, only to look upon the next in line with a love we dare not show. Youth must find another light for they seem to flicker fast. Pope Paul VI denounces birth control; the Democratic Convention is penetrated with rocks and billy clubs — pausing only to nominate Hubert H. Humphrey and Edmund Muskie, and the U.S. has 707 Olympic winners. The Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty is signed; the Russians invade Czechoslovakia and Jacqueline Kennedy marries Greek multi-millionaire Aristotle Onassis. Nixon now — Nixon for 4 more — it's his turn to wear the crown; lulie marries David Eisenhower and men prepare to reach the moon. Christmas '68 sees a new president - a new administration — and a new conquest. Through the chaos, the dissents, the times of stress - men will strive to close the gap - to meet new expectations. The Apollo 8 orbits the moon in holiday cheer providing a celestial New Year's hope. The measure of man comes to light, the will to bond the people with the times — the reason to unite.
